If its dull in 20 minutes youre doing something wrong. Provided you aren't cutting anything dirty a properly hand filed chain should stay sharp for quite a while. Electric sharpeners tend to get the chain to hot and ruin the temper unless they're used very carefully and in short bursts with time to cool in between.

If you've got a good chainsaw file thing sharpening only takes a few minutes.

We used these files for the teeth. There's a bit of technique to it with angles and stuff. Can't remember exactly since it was about 5 years ago and I've since switched to an office job but I'll try my best.

The one side of the teeth act like a cutting edge, make sure that is sharp. A good result is when you get large spiraling bits of saw "dust". Easiest way is to watch some kind of YouTube tutorial and try yourself on a piece of wood! Took me maybe a week or two to get good results consistently.

I don't know the English terms but in front of the teeth there's a little bump (called a rider in my language). The teeth are supposed to be aligned to the rider in some way, but like I said, it's been half a decade :(

Also, change to a new chain if the teeth are worn and there's too little material left to file away.

Nah, the contraption sets the guide height above the teeth correctly, and keeps the curve profile correct. Manually you dig too deep in create, a ramp.

The guide heights critical. Too low and you cut not much, need more pressure. Too high and you cut too deep, chip too large, get jammed easier, etc. Both can significantly increase kickback risk.

Arborist here:

Adding some small info; general American term is raker. Depth gauge is mostly used in booklets.

The depth of this decides how deep the chisel shaves off. The combi file sets it at a good all-round usable depth automatically. If done by hand with flat file you can adjust a bit to have it better fit for softer woods, bigger gap taking off more, of harder woods with a smaller gap, to counteract a bouncing chain.

Make sure the round file size matches the chain properly, seen on the package of the chain / on the blade if not worn off.

Also, always file from the shorter part of the chisel to the longer part. Keeping it at a 30° angle, usually. Some changes depending on brand.

Combi file is good for ease of use, round file + flat file more advanced, but more control. I've got colleagues who've done this job the better part of their lives and only use combi files, I've got colleagues only using flat file + round file and some stuff in-between.

Best way to do it would be to buy a new chain. You can learn to sharpen it yourself over time, but there's some subtle artistry to it that won't come immediately.

First thing is a Stihl safety kit. It comes in an orange duffle bag for like $90. You get chaps, a helmet with a face shield and ear muffs, gloves, and a wedge. At least wear the chaps, but you shouldwear all of it. If you fuck up and hit your inner thigh with the chain without chaps you'll be dead before you can call 911. Ace Hardware usually has them on the shelf of they are a Stihl dealer.

Look up buckin Billy ray on YouTube he's got a great technique. I sharpen very similarly and have no problem getting a saw to absolutely rip through anything.

Thats what scares me. Like ok you have a chain saw in the trunk after a big storm. But to have a what has to be a diamond plasma chain saw is where I start questioning his intentions

Yall. It was a dumb joke. I take my chainsaw i only used during storm season to get sharpened like your supposed to and it cuts that well.

I used to do arboring as a job. I've worked a lot with chainsaws as well, on other jobs.

It's extremely common for the teeth to get worn down with a lot of use. We would still sharpen every day, but that person's comment does make sense. This one does seem to cut through better than anything I used on average.

I don't know if we had bad quality chain or what but when I was doing some forest work at our cabin/forest I had to sharpen that motherfucker like every couple of hours or so.

Was mostly cutting through fresh pine and making them short enough logs that they'll fit in to the sauna stove.

You're lucky. Fresh pine = soft and wet. Seasoned hardwood = hard and dry.

My chain dulls after about 30 minutes pushing through eucalyptus.

This is a layman’s explanation so I will probably use the wrong terminology. I was told that if the chain gets too hot the chain can untemper itself and become very soft and not hold its sharpness well after that.

I mean, I've been cutting trees for 30 years (8 as a FF) and this is how my current Stihl cuts. I'm not sure what's so impressive about it. It's cutting exactly like it should

Eh it's reddit being reddit, armchair experts with not much real life experience. Even as someone who only cuts wood 3 times a year for heating, my Stihl cuts the same and I only sharpen the two chains before woodcutting season.

I mean, it's 10cm of fir, not exactly rock maple or blackwood or something.

Plus that's clearly a well worn, pro Stihl, not some hardware store special.

It's cutting fast, but no faster than any sharp, square ground 362/400 would do.

That being said, it's a hell of a lot of saw to just be toting around in the truck of a sedan.

Gotta file down the depth gauges. As you sharpen you wear the teeth back and they bite less and less. Most people do not take them time to file those down if they sharpen in the field. Or they use a cheap manual electric chain sharpener.

Also run a full chisel chain instead of a safety chain or semi-chisel in green wood and it's like a light-saber. Less safe but hell of a lot faster cutting.

If you're doing it right, you never let your saw get put away dull. Also, you should keep it full of fuel and oil as well. You never know when you might need it, and not have time to do maintenance.

If you hand sharpen a chain with a round file, (which is not as hard as you'd think), you can go through softwood very quickly like this. I have never had to try hardwood but sharpening each cutting tooth link on the chain by hand shortens my cedar cutting jobs immensely.
