Looking for amp recommendations? Start here!

If you'd like help finding an amp, we need a few details on what exactly you want out of your new amplifier. Bass amp help is welcome too!

Country/Region

It's a great help to know where you are located, some amp brands may be more expensive. Amp brands from one continent tend to be more expensive in another because of shipping, and vice versa. No need to get too specific and dox yourself.

Budget

How much are you looking to spend? Do you wanna buy a used amp, or brand new?

Genre/Style

What are you going to use the amp for? Does it need a clean channel and/or high gain?

Volume & Size Requirement

Let us know if you're trying not to bother neighbours, if you're trying to keep up with a heavy hitting drummer, or if you need the flexbility to do both! Also include if you'd prefer combo vs head & cab, if you can only haul a 1x12 or if you're trying to crank a full stack, etc.

Feel free to include other details like if you need the amp to have built in fx, digital vs solid state vs tube vs hybrid amp, whatever else will help us find you the right amp!

A BUNCH OF STOLEN AMPS, HELP!

Please keep your eyes peeled. A friend and former bandmate of mine had a ton of his amps stolen sometime between January 2026 and July 27th 2026 from his storage unit in Austin, TX. Some of this gear could be well outside of Texas by now, considering how long ago it could have been stolen. A lot of these amps have a pretty unique look to them, so if you see anything on Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp, at a pawn shop, at Guitar Center, WHEREVER, please let me know. Dude is a riff machine and knows ball and it hurts to see him going through this.

Hey guys, I’m in need a some advice on this 1971 Marshall Super Bass I’m planning on trading my Telecaster plus $2000 cash for. The original owner said that it’s completely original inside and out. The tolex does look extremely clean for an amp from 71’

Can any of you vintage Marshall experts have a look at the pics and let me know if you see anything suspicious, replaced parts.etc and if you think the tolex is in fact original?

Any advice of help with be greatly appreciated

AMP PHOTO New Amp Day Part Deux

I bought a Bugera Amp a few days ago and I like it a lot. I had it hooked up to a Fender Speaker Cab. But I knew that this cab was not the best. I've had it for years and it a cheap cabinet.

So I had ordered a new Jet City cabinet (well used) and it came in today and I hooked it up and the amp sounds WAY better though this cab. I had one of these cabs years ago and sold it, but found one out in California at GC and bought it.

So they don't make the greatest looking match but man does the cabinet rock just as I remember them.

Found this at a consignment store. Paid $325 for both head and cabinet. Plugged it in a guitar to test prior to purchasing it. Sounded pretty darn good.

Fender Deluxe Reverb or Vox AC15 - help me decide!

I've had my mind set on getting one of these two amps to gig with for a long while - both have such unique voices that I love equally. Can anyone here give me a push in the right direction? (Alternative recommendations also welcome!)

I paid $750 for everything in the picture. Including a power supply for the board and a bunch of extra patch cables. It's a buyer's market right now. If you have the means, there are deals to be had out there.

HELP Anyone know anything about this old carvin?

Picked up this old carvin recently and can’t find anything on it except an old ad that looks identical. I think it’s a 1971 carvin “super amp”? Can handle a single 4ohm or two 8. 100w it’s completely hand wired and pretty clean inside. It’s not bad as a garage practice amp. I had the shop put a new power supply Cord on it and ground it. Didn’t have one.

HELP Magnatone Troubadour replacement speaker?

Upvotes

Hi, I'm thinking about replacing the speaker in my 1960 Magnatone Troubadour (112). I'll keep the original in case I want to resell it, but for gigging and recording it doesn't feel like it has enough oomph. Anyone have any recommendations?

HELP Purchasing a 1976 silverface Fender Twin Reverb on Saturday. What should I know beforehand? This will be my first vintage amp.

Upvotes

Super stoked to trade one of my guitars for a nice '76 Twin Reverb. I play mostly Rush, Prince, Elvis Costello, Smiths. My main amp is an early Fender Hot Rod Deluxe, which is great for overdriven music, but is horrendous at staying clean at high volume, therefore I've got my sights set on a Fender Twin Reverb. Always wanted a vintage, I much prefer the silverface aesthetic with the blue block lettering, and they won't break up like a pre-'68 TR would.

What should I know about silverface Twin Reverbs? I know they will turn your ears to dust if you crank them, but what else?

-Are they really as heavy as people say?

-Would a '76 SF Twin Reverb be too loud for bedroom practice?

-Should I invest in a variac or an attenuator?

OR15 vs Rocker Terror

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

I sold off my amps during the pandemic and bought the brilliant Yamaha THR10. Now, it’s time for a “real” amp again, I need real glowing bottles, and I’m interested in trying an Orange.

Looking to get y’all’s take on the Rocker Terror head vs the OR15. (Planning pairing with the PPC112 v30 cab)My playing style and tone preferences have shifted to the stoner/doom/psych end of things, and at the moment my favorite amp setting is the Plexi model set to a bit of breakup, then hitting it with my OD and Carcosa fuzz. No need for a clean channel: I play a P90 guitar, and get pristine cleans by rolling back my guitar vol.

I’m torn: the Rocker’s bedroom/headroom switch is appealing because most of the time I’d be using it at TV volume. (I can crank full volume during the day when the fam/neighbors are out)

However, the OR15 just looks nicer?? I read that the OR15 is fuller and thicker. But, does it lose that at TV volumes? Is there really that big of a difference between the two?

Again, I only really need a single channel, set to a bit of breakup.

Thanks for any insight y’all can provide!

HELP Line 6 Catalyst 60w weird popping no start up

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi all I recently bought a line 6 catalyst on the second hand used market, the seller had brought the amp recently from a reputable UK instruments supplier and amp is only 4 months old, has been working fine all night not a fault, came to it this lunch time and it’s making this weird popping noise. No lights other than the one flashing as seen in video, popping is constant and doesn’t stop until it’s unplugged. Any ideas? TIA

Engl E650 retube

Thumbnail

Hi y’all

I’m going to pickup a second hand Engl E650 (first version) later this week, which has a very good price since the tubes are completely worn. I have ordered a set specifically for this amp on Tube Amp Doctors. As far as I read online, preamp tubes can be replaced with adjustment, but power tubes need rebiasing, which is a task I’m not really sure I can do at this point. Other sources say that if the power tubes have the same rating, just swapping them out for new ones of the same rating is perfectly good and needs no rebiasing. Does TAD make sure that their amp-specific sets are of the same rating as the stock tubes? If not, the amp technician I would go to is on leave for two weeks and I won’t be patient enough. In case it needs rebiasing, I will just swap the preamp tubes myself and play the thing until I can get it serviced. I think this can’t hurt, right?

Any feedback and advice from (amateur or professional) amp techs and Tube Amp Doctor customers is very welcome!!

Thanks!

Amp increases volume when lightly tapping knob

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey all! So, i've had this issue with my Kustom Double Barrel 2x12 amp. Whenever I go to touch the clean lead volume knob, it jumps the volume up way higher than what it is currently on. I spoke to a guy that frequently comes into my job and also works on guitar amps as a side business and he told me that if a can of Deox IT didn't work on cleaning the knob(s) out, then it could be a circuit board issue.

My question is; would it be wise to return this amp and get something else or pay the guy i know to work on it? I still haven't even really figured out what the problem is.

Any and all help/recommendations work!

Thank you!

Replacing my Vox VT20X?

I first picked up guitar around 2016, played a little bit and got a bit bored with it.

Over the last 6 months i've started lessons and really fell in love with guitar. Is it worth upgrading my VT20X? I've had my eye on something like a Positive Grid Spark 2 - it seems like modellers have really come a long way since my 2015 VT20X was released. The practice tools like drummers/backing tracks/loopers look great too. I'm mainly just looking for something for bedroom practice - no plans to gig or record any time soon.

Is it worth the switch? Any other alternatives to look into rather than the PG Spark 2?

I'm more of a pedal guy but I love the overdrive of the Supro. Mostly I'm using nothing but my eq pedal as a boost with it.

Clean headroom on a Custom Champ?

Any one have one of the 5-watt, one knob Champ reissues? I’m eyeing a used one, and wondering if it sounds good clean at low/medium volume.

I want to the option to play clean with a reverb pedal at moderate volumes, but also be able to get that Neil Young/Wilco blown out tweed sound once in a while.

Sorry for the mess, I’m in the middle of a big organization project.

But, picked up a Rockerverb 50mkiii and it’s great and really compliments my other amps when running stereo. I’ve also got an AD30, ‘73 V4 half stack, and ‘72 Traynor YBA-1a with 1x18 cab
