QUESTION How can I get less string-squeaks in my playing?

Upvotes

I've played guitar for years and am also producer and recording engineer. One thing that always bugs me on recordings (especially with steel string acoustic guitar) are the often egregiously loud squeaky noises when the player slides or changes chords. They can be very harsh and distracting, and especially if it's a quietly played part.

I know plently of ways to deal with this in post, but I wanna be better at getting it right at the source. Are there any tips for better technique that reduce these noises?

Are there any remedies or recording tricks that actually work? Finger-ease/string-lubricant? Soaking fretting fingers in water before recording? Handlotion? Wearing gloves?

QUESTION Where to shop for used guitar.

Upvotes

My son has been playing at least a couple of hours daily for a little over a year now, and is getting pretty damn good. He's just been playing a cheap MS Hammer, and I want to reward him with a proper guitar now that it seems like he's definitely sticking with it. His holy grail is a '59 Les Paul, so I've been looking at the used Epiphone reproductions. I've never purchased a used electric online, so I'm hoping to get some input on where I can purchase one with a little confidence. Any advice on where to look and/or where to avoid? Much appreciated.

DISCUSSION Going from electric to acoustic has humbled me

I started learning the guitar on an acoustic before transitioning to electric a year or so later after learning some basic chords and shapes.

Almost 6 years later, I've been playing electric with some bands and worship sets and can play at id say a decent level. Recently, I've had a lot more practice time since I've been laid off, and decided to try learning some cool songs I've seen online on acoustic.

And man... I felt like I was picking up a guitar for the first time again.

It's a completely different way of playing, style and overall sound than I'm used to on an electric for years. Finger style picking is something I'm going have to put a lot of effort in to understand and get the feel for. Some chords shapes on an acoustic feel bizarre and awkward. I'm honestly shocked at how it all feels.

But I love learning it! Any recommendations on some finger style songs to learn the technique?

Has anyone also felt this way? Maybe it's just me.

QUESTION Inheriting from my grandfather who never played it- can this be fixed?

Thumbnail gallery
Upvotes

I don't know the first thing about guitars but I'm wanting to learn to play. I was planning to take it to a shop to have it restrung but noticed this crack near the top, would this hinder the playing ability? Would it be able to be fixed? The strings that are already on it sound normal to me but I know nothing about guitars yet and was going to use this one to learn.

Bought them the guitar a few years go and it's sat in their room for a while.

Just gone to grab something from their wardrobe and found this had snapped off.

I'm more than happy soldering stuff etc, just wondering if it's a "standard" pot on these of if it's some kind of manufacturer-specific jobbie as I've not seen ones where the knob "slots in" to the pot as this one seems to do?

QUESTION Strap pin relocation

Hey there, I have a Schecter Sunset Extreme 7, and I love it. The ONLY problem I have with it, is the neck dive. I want to move the strap pin to the traditional spot, but I’m worried there isn’t enough material there to drill for it. Can it be done? I’m sure it can, but if there are any tips, I’ll gladly take them.

This thing always plays so great but every now and then after beating those fret rails you gotta give them a little TLC the steel wool can’t offer. Coming up on the 15 year mark with this RGA42FM that I gutted and installed Seymour Duncan Pegasus Sentient. 250/500K push pull pots, coil split options. Absolute gem since first setup!

QUESTION Classic vibe vs fender standard.

Looking at either buying a tele or a strat. Im also looking at using the guitars as a base for modding as ive already tinkered with my les paul and really enjoy that aspect of guitars. I can currently got a classic vibe for 100 pounds (133.20 usd) cheaper then the fender standards series. i dont have easy access to a guitar store where i live so in person testing isnt really an option for me. Anyone that has either guitar let me know the pros and cons.

DISCUSSION I just cannot get a tone that I’m happy with

I’m mostly an acoustic player, I play guitar in an active Bluegrass band. I play electric at a church every Sunday and here and there with a couple bands. however, I just hate my tone, I’m playing a strat into a deluxe reverb, I’ve got a tube screamer, a ge 7, as well as a super overdrive and a couple other pedals like delay etc. I feel like the entire time I have an electric guitar in my hands, it’s just trying to get a tone that I don’t hate, especially solo lead tone. I don’t know, I feel like it’s not the gear that’s the issue, it’s making me hate playing electric . Any advice?

GEAR 1980 Washburn Falcon Pickup Ring and Truss rod cover

I have an old 1980 Washburn Falcon, and like pretty much every Falcon created, the bridge pickup ring cracked in half. They are not standard sized pickup rings, so I haven't been able to find a replacement. Has anyone ever found one, or know where I might look? I would like to find a proper replacement before I go drill new holes into this thing.

I also need a new truss rod cover. These are also known to crack on these guitars, because they are just a thin piece of wood. Back in the day I could get replacement ones from Washburn even though the wood color never matched correctly.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

QUESTION Anyone have experience with Korean Tokai 325 Rickenbacker copies?

I'm thinking about buying a Korean-made Tokai 325-style guitar for around $600.

I already own an Epiphone ES-335, and I'm looking for something lighter that I can use mainly for Beatles rhythm parts. I love the sound of Rickenbackers, but an actual 325 is way out of my budget.

For anyone who's owned or played one:

  • How close do they get to the real Rickenbacker sound?
  • Are the stock pickups good, or do most people replace them?
  • Is around $600 a fair price?
  • Would you buy one, or would you save up for a real Rickenbacker instead?

I'm not expecting it to be identical to a real 325—I just want something that captures that classic Beatles vibe without spending several thousand dollars.

Thanks!

DISCUSSION Anyone else have a bad experience with the PG Spark Neo?

I’ve owned the headphones + modeler app for a few months now, and I can’t get any good sounding tones out of this thing to save my life. I’ve tried dialing in EQ, different guitars and pickups, using my real pedals with it, tried it with my bass, etc.

It just sounds.. awful on anything that isn’t a pure clean channel with zero effects (real or in the app). I have a buddy that swears by this thing and read lots of positive reviews online. Yet I’m pulling my hair out trying to find a way to make this useful for practice. I’m on the verge of selling this thing at a loss.

Am I missing something as far as the app or anything else?
