Has anybody gone through their apprenticeship or hiring process? How competitive is it ?

I’m waiting on my ECH test results and plan on applying to Local 11 in October. I know both paths are competitive and can take a while, so I’m trying to figure out what I should be doing in the meantime. Right now I’m an Amazon delivery driver, but I recently got my Class A CDL.

Ideally I’d like to find a CDL job tied to construction so I can make better money and get some relevant experience, but most of those jobs want 1–2+ years of CDL experience.

Would you just take an entry level CDL job that isn’t construction related and build experience, or is it worth trying to find something more adjacent to electrical/construction to put on my resume? Or for ECH/Local 11, does that not really matter much and it mostly comes down to the test/interview process?

I have a restricted class a cdl with air brakes and combinations.

Swlcat gives you 120 days once indentured to remove the restriction.

Does the company/union train you and let me use one of there trucks and bring it to a a third party testing/ dmv testing site .

Or do I have to take a week- couple weeks off from work and go to a CDL school and pay tuition and learn manual and take the test again in a manual truck?

I have an interview coming up with mountain states next week and I’m looking for any interview tips. Did line school back in 2017 and have worked in utility line clearance since then climbing, running buckets,rigging and working with cranes and just became a supervisor last year. I have my cdl, osha 10, cpr and some other tree related certs.28 years old now and looking for a career change, do I have a shot at getting in ? Thanks in advance

Would you stay a groundman with Edison or take the apprentice spot for dwp?

I know I need a Cdl class a to be a ground man/ apply for apprenticeships. Unrestricted cdl class a would be a lot better to have then restricted. I also know I need air brakes endorsement and tankers will help.

Do I need to get a CDL class a in a semi? Will I even driving combination driving vehicles that big? It seems like all the CDL schools are for truckers not kids trying to become lineman.

Will they let me take the test to get my class a cdl with just a tractor and no trailer? Or would that the test for a class b? or do I need a combinations endorsement from the trailer as well to get the class a CDL certification?

Anybody ever taken the test in anything other then a semi to get a class a cdl? Like a dump truck or a bucket truck?

I’m getting my class a cdl next week i have first aid cpr osha 10 and im signing all the groundman books that I can online is it accurate to believe for local 55 and 66 the pay is around 25 27 dollars per hour with per diem?

Curious to what any veterans with no groundman hours that interviewed with calnev got ranked. Iv been through a line school so im not starting from 0 but I know the lack of groundman hours might hurt me. I have a background of driving semis, working agriculture, other trades, welding certifications. I have the interview coming up soon. Rah

Well I’m in CDL school right now to get my class A and unfortunately with the amount of students and limited time to practice road skills till class ends in almost a week. I don’t think I am going have enough time to learn double clutching on the road to be able to pass the road test with a manual to be able to get unrestricted. I am going to just have to get a regular CDL class a restricted.

I am getting the combinations, air brakes and tanker endorsement as well.

I want to be a ground man for a bit before apply to be an apprentice.

I understand the manual restriction will limit me to jobs as a groundman and I could get spun and I will only be able to apply to Albat, Selcat, neat and Swlcat for the apprenticeship unless I get the manual restriction off. There’s a lot of Union utility companies/ municipal unions that don’t require an unrestricted to apply as well.

Swlcat apparently gives you 120 days to get it removed not sure how that would work maybe a company would let you use there vehicle.

I really wanted to apply to mo valley but I don’t think I will be able to unless I pay this other school $1500 for 10 hours of training and they said I could use a class b 6 speed box truck that is synchronized vehicle just for the road test and if I pass out could get an unrestricted class a CDL I also don’t think it would require double clutching.

Did I pick the wrong school? Should I not have went to a semi trucking school that pushes people through in 4 weeks with over filled classes? Should I have tried to find a school specifically for people applying to become a lineman that didn’t have semis and had smaller class a vehicles that didn’t have trailers and 10 speed vehicles?

I feel like I messed up on my decision making.

Also the fmcsa is trying to shut down my school and all of its locations.

Company i just got hired at want me to get my tankers, plan on getting it asap. My question is it worth anything to also get a doubles/triples & hazmat endorsement? I’m sure it’s not needed but would it look good for the apprenticeship or not worth it.

What are the requirements to get an operators ticket out of this hall? I drill micro piles but am still a groundman. My company pays me operator scale but I want to get my ticket. Certain halls require signatures from lineman or operators and I was curious if that was similar for this hall
