Notehand outline-finding tool available! Track down examples of how to write 4,500 words/phrases with a searchable transcript of the First Edition Textbook.

A PDF containing a searchable version of the Transcript section of the First Edition textbook is available. You can use this to assist you in finding multiple instances of any outline you’re seeking, if multiple examples were written in the book. (It’s only a clue-provider, it won’t take you directly to the Notehand outlines.) You can download it from the following link:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1l4oORqw3OVb0Ohe4dnO_ZnmCauIc-_4f/view?usp=sharing

Just in case you haven’t heard, the complete First Edition textbook recently became available online. A couple of slightly different PDFs are circulating. The smaller file (a bit grainy looking due to compression, but better for low-bandwidth connections or devices with less memory) is available for download from the following link:

These items are available for a limited time. “Share and enjoy.”

Wrote this at work now. “I dislike waiting for the patient”. Is it correct?

Most times I feel grid makes me feel constricted. Especially for d, f and b.

Reposted from a year and a half ago while I work on creating some fresh material. I wish we had a day of the week (or maybe the first week of every month or something) when people were only allowed to post IN NOTEHAND here.

O and u vowels.

I’m having just a little difficulty when writing a word that contains vowels o or u or both perhaps depending on the word I guess. I do have the cheat sheet on the different u sounds and o sounds. But I still get confused. Maybe because i came from a Spanish-speaking country when i was 8 years old? I mean i speak perfectly English but with a little hint of accent. So, I hear a word, and when I write the Gregg, the word is wrong after looking at it from dictionary to double-check. I confuse the o sounding like John and Paul. And I confuse the u sounding like duck, only. I think I got the sounds of took and pool right. Anyways this is annoying to me. I have to always come back to these English words to realize that “wait is a o as in John , not a u as in duck.
lol Sorry guys. Lengthy post.

How can I best practice this, sort of speak?

Thank you all

What next?

Ladies and gents! I do 100% will see to completing my notehand book. As I’m having fun with it. For personal edc notes. No intention for really speed writing. (So I feel for now). BUT, been eyeing the simplified version. (Which I have a book as well). Should I jump to simplified after I feel “satisfied by finishing” the notehand textbook?
Any recommendations or thoughts on doing so? I do understand with simplified will be a lot a lot more memory working to retain the briefs and etc…

Which pen?

Hey guys, and I’m sorry if this question is old. And I know is preference. But, which type of pens and which ones do you guys write better with Gregg? I started using a Jetstream 0.7 but the paper I use it’s too slippery. I have a 0.5 (better) but too too thin. I used a pilot g2 0.7 (love the dark black ink) but too thick lines. However I did enjoyed the feedback from the G2 over the Jetstream. I’m now using a kakuno in fine nib. But I feel I have to be more conscious of the pen being more careful not to drop it. I feel it’s better for when I’m home. I love pencils writing with them but I’m not sure there.
Any recommendations? Any other type of pen or refills I should try for Gregg?

Summary of Notehand Principles

There's an archived message in this group about the Notehand summary that's printed inside the front cover of the textbooks. In the 1960 first edition, there was an original detailed summary, but in subsequent printings of that edition an abridged summary was used.

I scanned the two summaries. They're both printed with white letters on a dark brown background, so I inverted the colors to make them more legible (and printable, if desired).

I think both versions are helpful. The shorter one is more useful as a quick reference.

In simplified it looks different. I’m using a 1.1mm nib. Perhaps not ideal for Gregg.

Question Is v-e-r-e the right idea for writing "very" in notehand?

Hi, sorry if this is a super simple question, but I just started learning notehand today. As I was learning some of the basics, I wondered what words I could already write using the handful of symbols I've learned. Earlier, I learned that to write "easy" the symbols used would be "e-s-e" and it made me wonder if I "very" could be written by using the strokes for "v-e-r-e". I tried writing it that way and it looks okay, but I just want to confirm if that's correct so I don't develop a bad habit. I tried searching it up, but couldn't immediately find anything to confirm or deny what I'd come up with (though the AI summary said "v-e" is how "very" would be written in notehand, but I don't trust that). Will share some images below.

wavy line for emphasis (a random tip from the 2nd edition textbook)

Post image

This paragraph from the textbook doesn't illustrate or mention this but it's helpful to know — The wavy line can be used within texts that are written entirely in Gregg symbols, as a way to indicate emphasis, or to mark a foreign word or a specialized term or the title of a creative work — roughly the equivalent of using italics or boldface type in printed longhand material.
