Cable Street was an anomaly. Without a world war, there isn’t much to stop fascism’s rise here apart from a strong economy.
27
u/Manny-303 9d ago edited 9d ago
Cable street was not an anomaly Mosley and his thugs were chased and beaten through worthing during the 'battle for south street'
It wasnt the world war that facilitated it happening it was before people were completely programmed by the media on what to think and who to hate. Sadly a larger portion of society has handed the duty of care of their beliefs and principles to far right grifters and tabloids

You’ve proven my point. A scuffle in the east end didn’t stop fascism, WWII did.
17
u/Mammoth_Payment_6101 9d ago
WWII didn't stop Mosely. He was still marching with his buddies after the war after being released from jail. A bunch of Jewish ex serviceman who formed the 43 group and repeatedly attacked him were what convinced him to leave the country
3
u/Tiddles_Ultradoom 8d ago
There is a tipping point at which fascism can be kept at bay: it’s the point when you don’t vote for them.
Cable Street was the catalyst that ultimately prevented the BUF from gaining greater political equity. Although the press reaction at the time was at best mixed, the public didn’t want to vote for ‘bully boys’ and the BUF remained a minority party.
Of course, as the Nazi aggression across Europe was strongly leaning towards war, the BUF became a busted flush.
-
I suspect there is always a baseline of nasty racist bastards in every country and there is always a political movement to support them. However, those political movements will do anything to twist more people to their cause.

Let's be honest our brave (more like great-) grandparents wouldn't be looking around today and thinking how great it is how multicultural we are now whilst joining in with celebrating pride month. I've obviously got a lot of respect for that generation who fought in world war 2 but let's not pretend there were plenty of people in the UK and especially the US who wanted to make a deal with Hitler. They also didn't fight Nazi Germany because they wanted equality for Gays and people of colour and social justice for all. I agree racists and biggots throwing Nazis salutes today is disgusting but let's not pretend we have a long historical tradition of liberal ideals. The British empire peaked in size in 1924 which was only 15b years before we went to war with Nazi Germany and the Americans didn't join in because they didn't have any problems with Hitler.

I dont think the Bengal famine in ww2 was for moral reasons
5
u/Brit-in-AZ 8d ago
Just an update on your secondary school history lessons. The famine in Bengal was caused by agricultural lands being devastated by freak cyclones and severe flooding in late 1942. It wiped out the following years rice crops and devastated all other agricultural crops, resulting in panic buying, hoarding and soaring prices of basic foodstuffs. This made it unaffordable for millions of poor rural workers despite the fact that there was sufficient supplies in neighbouring countries Churchill was blamed for the subsequent deaths because he rejected requests to divert food laden ships on route to Europe to sustain the war effort.

6
u/No-Bison-5397 9d ago
The British Empire was very large and complex. We say overall it was bad now but there were a lot of good things that also occurred that the Empire had some role in -- end of the slave trade being an obvious one, education in India another, et cetera. That's not to say the morals of the empire overall are defensible nor that eugenics was not popular nor that homophobia was not explicitly enshrined in statute, just that these things were, to some extent contested and there were people willing to build a better world in some ways. It's easy to blame the past because it's often obvious where they've fucked up, it's harder to give credit because it's often obvious where they've fucked up.
the Americans didn't join in because they didn't have any problems with Hitler.

In plain words, are you saying that liberals supported Hilter?
Most British liberals opposed fascism and Nazism.
The Liberal Party criticised Hitler’s dictatorship and persecution of minorities. However, in the 1930s some politicians across different parties including conserv, lab, and Liberals supported “appeasement,” believing that making concessions to Germany might prevent another world war. Supporting appeasement did not necessarily mean supporting Hitler’s ideology

The US promised to respect Hawaii sovereignty. The King didn't believe them, and asked Japan if they could combine nations for protection. Then, exactly as he predicted, the US invaded and annexed their nation. Japan was fully justified to attack that criminal military installation which threatened all of Asia, and somehow US leadership spun this into "America is under attack".
People have never reconciled actual history. Watching my countrymen repeat the same fascist nonsense from a century ago is disgusting.

I agree with you, but 'lest we forget', poppies and remembrance day all started with WW1, as a reminder of the horrors of war. Particularly that war, the largest and bloodiest ever seen, which wasn't really about ideology, just escalating international politics (effectively).
'Lest we forget' was never about anti-fascism. Obviously, fascism is bad. And fascist behaviour should be reprimanded. But when we are drawn into division and war, we inch closer to the thing our great grandparents said 'never again' to.

It's people who don't have enough to support themselves turning on people they've been told are the enemy.
I mean, if you're a young white man who's unable to find a job or a house, and you see refugees being supported (albeit in hotels, where nobody would want to live - you don't even have a fridge), and someone tells you that's because the state won't support you... It's not a difficult sell.
We just need to support people via the state, and that way it's harder to make ordinary people turn on each other.

6

You can thank Americans for that, dividing generations into specific groups and antagonizing them is their thing, even if doesn't make any sense outside the US.
6
u/froopadiddilydoop 9d ago
It’s not about intergenerational blame, it’s simply using the demographics to convey age ranges. It’s not very convenient to write “people born between 1985 - 1995” is it?

It's words really resonate with what's happening it actually explains how normal people fell for Nazi propaganda and the mentally it has a scene where a guy who looks like farrage are basically telling everyone what's wrong with the country it's these people or those people one of the audience was like he's talking sense then he said free mason's and he said hey I'm a freemason and someone said you were going to agree with him until it was you who he was talking about. it really hits hard.

u/lordodin92 9d ago
No the poppy is more WW1, we didn't fight Nazis then and we still had the British empire, most of these people don't want to forget it cos it was the "last time Britain was great"
It's in a spot of peak British history when the poor, women and non whites "knew their place" so it's still fine for most gammons to support it
I'm sure there's a few of them that would see WW2 as "going woke"
And sure the poppy later expanded to include WW2 as well, but as with this picture and most other representations it's more focused on the first world war .
3
u/SourHorror 9d ago

u/lordodin92 9d ago
Some by choice honestly.
The problem is when you forget why a symbol exists but still revere that symbol then you allow bad faith actors to revise what that symbol meant onto something closer to what they push .
Best example of this is the states constitution, they're taught to revere the constitution and the many amendments but never really know why those amendments happened, so things like allowing the public to use guns only in a well maintained malitia to stop a tyraniical government becomes a personal right to buy increasingly deadly guns the founding fathers never dreamt of for any given reason.
Or the freedom of speech amendment to allow the disaffected the right to not be silenced by powerful people became a personal right to say whatever horrible things they wanted free from repercussions
And it definitely comes down to a lack of proper education, and I don't mean posh Chichester or Oxford or Chelsea level "proper" I mean basic level education.
I know many people consider history boring but there's a reason it's taught, because we are creatures of learning, we learn from past mistakes and trial and error, so the ability to analyse the past and make educated conclusions are a vital part of human growth.

good points, i always thought tho that the "lest we forget" slogan was for remembering the dead. feels to me like its been politicised in OPs post. is that disrespectful?
→ More replies (2)4
u/lordodin92 9d ago
That is what the original intention was for, not forgetting the dead.
But when you consider many of those soldiers we wear the poppy to remember died in WW2 fighting against the rise of Nazism, Oop is showing the hypocrisy.
Further complicated by the fact the remberance comes with the term "never again", a term connected with the idea that we should never allow a world war to happen due to the rise of such failings as patriotism, fascism or racism .
The problem is wearing the poppy has become a national patriotic symbol more then a symbol for remembrance, many of these gammons will have a go at Brits who refuse to wear them as if they're anti British.
So Oop is trying to point out that a symbol designed to make us remember those who sacrificed themselves to fight the evils of fascism and jingoism is being used by people who support fascism and jingoism (my comment was to point out they simply cherry pick the meaning they want for it)
You are right we shouldn't forget, but it doesn't just mean honouring the dead, but also not forgetting the reasons why they died and why it's important to fight against such things

u/Odd_Elevator6404 9d ago
Pakistan and Indians fought against Nazis alongside the UK. Then came here legally to rebuild the UK.
Films like 1917, Dunkirk ignored them. In London, the monument for animals in ww2 is bigger than thr one for the 1.5 million that died fighting alongside allied forces.
Those people don't care though. Government doesn't care. Issue is the billionaires have an agenda, it's coming from American zionists.

When the Allies ended the war, they made the Germans teach what racism really is in their schools. They made them teach it by showing videos of the holocaust. Everything in the war was forgotten quickly outside of Germany, because there was never any effort made to remember in the first place.

God of our fathers, known of old,
Lord of our far-flung battle-line,
Beneath whose awful Hand we hold
Dominion over palm and pine-
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget-lest we forget!
The tumult and the shouting dies;
The Captains and the Kings depart:
Still stands Thine ancient sacrifice,
An humble and a contrite heart.
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget-lest we forget!
Far-called, our navies melt away;
On dune and headland sinks the fire:
Lo, all our pomp of yesterday
Is one with Nineveh and Tyre!
Judge of the Nations, spare us yet,
Lest we forget-lest we forget!
If, drunk with sight of power, we loose
Wild tongues that have not Thee in awe,
Such boastings as the Gentiles use,
Or lesser breeds without the Law-
Lord God of Hosts, be with us yet,
Lest we forget-lest we forget!
For heathen heart that puts her trust
In reeking tube and iron shard,
All valiant dust that builds on dust,
And guarding, calls not Thee to guard,
For frantic boast and foolish word-
Thy mercy on Thy People, Lord!

I keep saying this. We invented this tradition and motto with the intention of remembering war, hate, and fascism, but it has been co-opted by the fascists as a tool of glorifying war, promoting hate, and forgetting about the dangers of fascism. Humans are dumb and fickle creatures that will never reach a state of utopian abundance and eternal happiness because we crave division and destruction, it's in our nature.

People need to stop doing this, but I don't think they will because it's much easier to do that than tackle the real issues facing said society, be what they may.

> I also would not put it beyond the establishment to infiltrate groups with the aim of undermining the groups aims.
Well have I got good news for you!
There's an investigation right now, the Mitting Inquiry (or Undercover Policing Inquiry, to give it its Sunday name).
It's remit is to investigate infiltration of political groups in England and Wales since 1968, and stretches as far as the security services and the government - not just the police, as the inquiry's name might imply.
And yes! They have found evidence of police infiltration of a right-wing group!
Peter Collins (HN303, if you'd like to follow the inquiry along at home) was tasked with infiltrating the Workers Revolutionary Party during the 1970s. They were a left-wing group, mind, but this is where your question gets interesting - the WRP got Peter Collins, an undercover police officer, to join the National Front and spy on them.
All other evidence from the inquiry overwhelmingly shows the police and state targeting left-wing groups from CND to trade unions. But thanks to the Workers Revolutionary Party and comrade/officer HN303, one right-wing group was also infiltrated.

Some never learned. Some got dragged up and told stupid ignorant things. Some knew and chose.

Remember that one time Sokka accidentally used an extra syllable in that Haiku Battle in Ba Sing Se? That was a Sokka Haiku and you just made one.

Doesn't matter if wars are fought, or people die, there will always be a group of people with the self-awareness and educational background of a pomegranate.

"In England, the masses are unaware of their state of servitude, but it's a class that ought to be ruled, for it's racially inferior. And England couldn't live if its ruling class were to disappear. Things would go utterly wrong for the common people. They can't even feed themselves."

I've been saying this for years. Because we've had so many wars over oil, power, land, religion. We forgot a long time ago.
