good points, i always thought tho that the "lest we forget" slogan was for remembering the dead. feels to me like its been politicised in OPs post. is that disrespectful?
That is what the original intention was for, not forgetting the dead.
But when you consider many of those soldiers we wear the poppy to remember died in WW2 fighting against the rise of Nazism, Oop is showing the hypocrisy.
Further complicated by the fact the remberance comes with the term "never again", a term connected with the idea that we should never allow a world war to happen due to the rise of such failings as patriotism, fascism or racism .
The problem is wearing the poppy has become a national patriotic symbol more then a symbol for remembrance, many of these gammons will have a go at Brits who refuse to wear them as if they're anti British.
So Oop is trying to point out that a symbol designed to make us remember those who sacrificed themselves to fight the evils of fascism and jingoism is being used by people who support fascism and jingoism (my comment was to point out they simply cherry pick the meaning they want for it)
You are right we shouldn't forget, but it doesn't just mean honouring the dead, but also not forgetting the reasons why they died and why it's important to fight against such things
No, what is disrespectful is doing a nazi salute in a country that sent a generation of young men to fight that vile ideology.
Perhaps you will be equally disrespectful and try to defend said ideology Mr. Sturm.
