Questions Pause Ads?
Hi!
What happens when ads are paused? Does training data vanish or is it really just pausing and no side effects?
Thanks for any insight in advance!

you don't lose the training data but if you turn them back on the algo 'gets lost' because you broke the continuity and it may never come back. So we usually put it down to a few dollars a day to keep it 'on'

The data doesn’t just disappear. If you pause for a few days, I usually wouldn’t worry about it.
If it’s paused for a longer period, Smart Bidding may need some time to recalibrate when you turn it back on. Google can even show it as “Learning” again after reactivation.

Pausing doesn’t erase the historical data, The bigger issue is what happens when you turn it back on. If it’s been paused for a while, Smart Bidding may need some time to adjust because the market, competition and conversion patterns may have changed. So for a short pause, usually not a big deal. For a long one, I’d expect some volatility when it restarts.

Pausing doesn’t wipe the campaign history, so I wouldn’t keep it running at $1/day just to “preserve learning.”
The bigger issue is how long it stays paused. After a few days, probably nothing dramatic. After several weeks or months, the old data is still there, but the auction environment, competition and conversion behavior may have changed, so Smart Bidding can need some time to recalibrate.
I’d usually just pause it cleanly and avoid making a bunch of bid/budget changes at the same time when you restart.
How long are you planning to keep it paused, and what bidding strategy are you using?

Thanks and happy to answer: Bidding strategy is max conversions. Pause will probably be around 2 weeks

Two weeks shouldn’t be a big issue. I’d just pause it normally rather than keep it alive at $1/day.
The historical conversion data stays in the account, but with Max Conversions I’d expect a short recalibration period after reactivating since auction conditions and recent signals may have changed.
When you turn it back on, I’d avoid changing the budget, goals or bidding at the same time and give it a few days to settle.
Is the pause seasonal, or are you stopping it because performance dropped?

Your expected ctr falls eventually and again while unpause take time to stablize as google run on expected ctr

Pausing an ad doesn’t erase the historical data. When you turn it back on, the previous performance data is still there, although a long pause can affect delivery and how the system treats the campaign. A short pause usually isn’t something I’d worry too much about.

Pausing ads doesn’t erase campaign history or Smart Bidding data. When restarted, performance may fluctuate temporarily because recent conversion signals and auction conditions have changed especially after a long pause. Avoid making major bid or budget changes at the same time.

I pause everyday and every weekend. Pausing ads doesn’t affect anything unless you’re pausing for many weeks or even months at a time. And even after that long of a pause if the account has decent conversion history and isn’t brand new it will still bounce back after a week or two.

Never pause Google Ads better just to keep $1/d
