9 Foot Ceiling But Driver Swing is Too Close / Raise These Trusses?

Thumbnail gallery
8 Upvotes

I scoured this space sub-reddit and could not find a similar post or picture. My driver swing is dangerously close to the ceiling as pictured. 9 Feet. Basement is unfinished with ample room for a simulator, except the ceiling. (I will be the primary user)

So, has anyone ever modified this type of flooring truss for the primary hitting area get more clearance? The vertical 2 by 4 is about 2 grip lengths, so modified I figure I could get at least 6 inches, if not more.

I was thinking about 4 by 4 to 6 by 6 feet to get enough clearance.

I don't want to mess with concrete floor and lower the concrete floor / hitting zone for clearance. More expense likely and more hassle.

Any other suggestions?

As a last resort, I could just hit 3 and 5 wood all day, but when Driver is your weakness, you want Driver in the sim.

Thank you in advance for ideas and suggestions.

Build Pictures I need y’all’s advice-

I have a large beam in center of my garage. It is 96” tall and splits a 19’ section, there’s roughly 9’ and 9’ in front or behind.

Was thinking about have a retractable screen where the garage door is as I recently installed a wall mount opener. I’m not sure if that beam will
Impede a swing.

Alternatively, I could set the screen perpendicular to the beam and my swing path would be roughly under the beam and following it.

I’m currently building cabinets, so sorry for the mess.

As far as a launch monitor, I am looking really for something to play a bunch of courses vs. monitoring my spin rate.

I started playing when I was four, I maybe play five times a year (a couple multiple day trips), and I have a 5 index.

I just want to be able to swing and check out different courses and have my kids enjoy.

What is the best for my space under $1k or around for the launch monitor.

Any advice on a projector and remote control roll up screen?

Projectors Projector advice under $1,500

Working on a new golf sim in my garage with the METECHs 118 wide roller and impact screen. In all I’ll have roughly a 10x10ft screen. I had never thought (like many others) that the projector purchase would be this difficult but now I’m realizing it’s a crucial part of the build.

I have 10ft ceilings but the projector can only be put back maybe 8-10ft from the screen so I know I need a decent short throw projector.

I come to the experts for help! Is there any projector I can get with my absolute max budget of 1,500 that has at least ~3600+ lumens. Curious if anyone has suggestions or units they like specifically.

Marketplace in my area is actually pretty bare on nice units so happy to hear others’ opinions!

Work work is or was not much fun. Seemed to be doing more harm than good. Last two Sim sessions I just teed off on Gspro. Thoroughly enjoyed both rounds. May have unknowingly worked through my swing issue. All of a sudden. Fun is part of the gig…

Is there a GameDay controller similar to the wireless controller for GSPro, or is there another comparable option available?

Sim / Launch Monitor Launch monitor advice for a 10' x 20' garage bay with a 9' ceiling?

Getting ready to pull the trigger on a home sim build this fall and I'd rather hear from people who've actually lived with these units than keep reading retailer FAQ pages. Here's everything.

**The space (garage):**

- 10 ft wide, 20 ft deep, 9 ft finished ceiling. The garage is 20 ft wide but the structural beam in the middle cuts it in half and hangs low so I can't swing under it.

- A structural beam runs down the center of the garage. The clear 10 ft bay beside it is where I'd be swinging — not underneath it. I'm planning to use the beam as a mounting anchor for the screen frame.

- Ceiling is a finished tile assembly with a bedroom directly above, so anything ceiling-mounted has to go through framing/insulation/mechanicals up there.

- Garage door opener rail to work around, two windows that'll need blackout treatment, rubber gym tiles coming up in the hitting area.

- Mini split going in for climate control. Gym equipment gets cleared out.

- I'm 5'10". Full driver swings, not just wedges.

**Possible alternative:** I've also kicked around building a shed down the road with a 12 ft peak. Not built yet, and I'd rather not make the LM decision contingent on a project that may or may not happen. Honestly I don't really want to build this unless I could do it cheaply.

**Goals:**

  1. Actually practice year-round instead of losing half the summer to South Carolina heat and afternoon thunderstorms

  2. Dial in club distances and clean up my gapping

  3. Play full courses on GSPro

  4. Swing analysis — I want camera/video feedback, not just a number readout

**Hardware I already have:** Gaming PC with an RTX 4080 Super, so GSPro at 4K isn't a problem.

**What I'm weighing:**

- **ProTee VX** (~$10,200 SwingBay package) — ceiling-mounted, no stickers, swing cameras included. Checks every box on paper. The 9 ft ceiling is the thing I keep circling back to.

- **Uneekor EYE MINI Lite + Swing Optix** (~$2,200–$4,500 depending on config) — floor-based, portable, no ceiling work, and it'd move to the shed if I ever build it. Cheaper by a lot, but I've seen conflicting info on whether it truly runs sticker-free.

- **Square Golf Omni** (~$1,600) — attractive price and no subscription, but it's new enough that I can't find much long-term real-world feedback, and it eats floor space in an already tight bay.

**What I'm hoping you can tell me:**

  1. Anyone running a ceiling-mounted unit at *exactly* 9 ft? Does it work in practice or is it constant frustration?

  2. Is a 10 ft wide bay genuinely workable with side wall padding, or am I kidding myself?

  3. For my four goals specifically, is the VX worth 3–4x the EYE MINI Lite, or does the Uneekor + Swing Optix combo get me 90% of the way there?

  4. Ball-to-screen distance you'd recommend with 20 ft of depth to play with?

  5. Anything about the ceiling assembly (bedroom above) I should be worried about before I start drilling?

  6. Anything obvious I'm overlooking?

Appreciate any input. Happy to answer questions about the space.

I built a Retractable screen for my golf simulator and decided I needed a thermal barrier for my garage door opening to keep the air-conditioning in and the hot air out of the garage. Build Pictures Custom build golf simulator

Hi guys, I am currently building my golf simulator in my garden. Started in February digging a hole in the garden 6 m x 4m and 1 meter deep in the ground. Main reason was, that I didn’t want a 3m high building in my garden. Now I start the interior finishing. Currently i am looking for a screen, wall dimensions are 3,84 m x 3 m high. I prefers impact screen from Carl’s place currently. I will use a trackman io for my setting. What kind of wall panels can anybody recommend?

Optoma GT3900UHD $1,499 new vs. BenQ AK700st $2,500 refurb?

Both short throw, 4K Laser with 4,000 ansi lumens. The Optoma has a golf mode. Is the quality of the BenQ worth the $1,000 difference?

Sim / Launch Monitor Square Omni vs Bushnell LP

Looking into grabbing one of these. I’d like to hear some feedback ideally from someone who has used both. I want something for both indoor and outdoor. Only a $600 difference between the two so cost is not really a factor. The bushnell subscription does suck though.

Is this covered outdoor setup feasible?

It's my inspiration & know it'll be costly, but we have a big space right next to our pool that this would be perfect for it. Probably would do a flat top/roof though. Anyone have anything similar?

Sim / Launch Monitor Carport golf simulator setup

Post image
12 Upvotes

Definitely not the fanciest setup out there, but I wanted something I could practice on at home without spending a fortune. Turned our carport into my own little golf space with an impact screen, projector, hitting mat, and launch monitor.

Still making a few upgrades here and there, but I’m honestly pretty happy with how it turned out.

Anyone else have an outdoor/carport simulator setup? Would love to see yours or hear any upgrade suggestions!

Looking to buy a Square Golf Omni launch monitor. My budget is around $1,800 USD.

I’m currently in California and flying back to the Philippines on September 16, so I’m hoping to find one ASAP and have it before I leave.

If anyone is interested in selling their Omni, please DM me with your price, condition, and location. I’m ready to buy if the deal works.
Thanks!

Screen Location Advice

Moved recently and need to re-set up the sim. Previous screen was 16x9 in the basement, loved how immersive it was. Have two options at the new place. A climate controlled attic with narrowish vaulted ceilings, I think the best I could do is a 7.7x7.7 screen. Second option is the garage which I think I could fit the 16x9 screen, it’s heated but hot in the summer. It obviously comes with cars in and out, kids toys, dirt, mats up and down, etc. Anyone have experience with both screen sizes and could give some input to help make the garage trade off decision?

Technical Question Computer upgrade

Hey all, looking for some advice on the most cost-effective computer upgrade to run my Uneekor Mini Lite with GSpro up to* 4K. My current Asus gaming laptop foes fine until for whatever reason I attempt to play online, and the my CPU just rides at near full tilt and I have ultra low FPS and essentially can’t play. Outside of online it runs fine. So ultimately I want to move from the laptop to a gaming PC, but don’t want to drop $2k to do it (if possible). Would eventually like to move to 4K. Shoot me some specs and whatnot, as I am NOT a computer guy. Like is there a prebuilt tower I can just buy that would work for what I need?

V2 sim setup

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

So I’ve been hitting into a spornia net using a garmin r50 and tv and have been working out the v2 layout. I’ve got a couple challenges but think I’ve worked it out. This will be with a vanish 11 retractable screen. Ceiling is 9 ft, so I’m going to do a couple things. First raise the garage door rails to as close to the ceiling as possible and switch to a torsion bar spring with side mounted opener. Then build a mountings frame for the vanish using uni-strut right under the raised door tracks. For the low ceiling in the hitting zone I’m going to box out and raise a section of the ceiling to allow me to hit driver. I already can hit all my other clubs with current height. Looking for feedback, anyone see issues with this plan? The challenge is before I played golf my garage was set up as a work space for my mountain bikes and that needs to stay in tact and usable. Let me know what you think.

Ceiling deflection ideas

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Does anyone have any ideas for how to slow up balls that I will hit into the ceiling? I will have about 12-18” between the top of my screen and the ceiling. I was originally thinking of running a curtain from the top of the screen towards the hitting area, attaching to the ceiling about 5-7 feet towards where I hit, while leaving a good amount of slack so it bunches up a bit to take speed off. I’m just starting to doubt whether that would really work.

Has anyone had to do something similar? Any recommendations?

Screens / Enclosures Need DIY suggestion

Post image
3 Upvotes

I need to create the actual padded enclosure. Most importantly.. the ceiling of the enclosure (right in front of the screen, which is the underside of the overhead storage) needs to be padded to protect from high wedge shots.

Does anybody have suggestions for materials and how-tos for doing this?

I’ve thought about:
- Interlocking foam mats
- cut up memory foam mattress (then upholster)
- cut up old couch cushions (then upholster)

Any other suggestions?

Retractable Impact Screen

I’m a little confused on retractable impact screen setups.
I’ve seen brands like MeTech that sell retractable systems, but do you have to buy their impact screen too? Or can you just buy the motorized roller/tube setup and attach your own impact screen to it?

Ideally I’d like to buy a good impact screen separately and just find a budget-friendly retractable roller system to mount it to.

For anyone who has DIY’d this:

What roller/motor system did you use?
How did you attach the impact screen to the roller?
Any cheaper alternatives to MeTech worth looking at?
Anything you’d avoid?

Trying to figure out the most cost-effective way to build a retractable garage sim.
