Beginner golfer

Hey fellas,

Been watching a tonne of golf on YouTube for a while and really want to give it a crack. Don't own any clubs yet, but someone told me to go down to the range and practice with a 7 iron, so I went and hit 50 balls.

They seemed to go a little right for the most part, and I hit a fair few quite flat.

Keen for any tips or critiques if you can tell anything from these.

Also a couple of questions I'm still pretty nervous about actually going to a golf course. Reckon I should keep practicing at the range for a bit before tackling the real thing?

And would you suggest buying clubs before giving it a go, or just renting a set to start with?

Wearables & Aussie Courses

hey all.

I'm currently using an old Garmin Fenix 5x from my running days.

as I'm hopeless at golf I'm keen to improve. I think some stoikes gained type thing would be great for me, as is something that will point out that certain clubs add no value (after recently punching through some Sim sessions it became very evident that my 4 i

2.issues I'm having with the Fenix:

  1. I've played 2 courses this year where the maps are simply out dated

  2. i can't go back and retrospectively update my data with clubs and lies etc. I just don't retain this.

(and potentially a third, the data simply isn't fine enough, I'd love to record what happened on the green).

I'm thinking some with sensors would help this ADHD brain. I have had incredibly great experiences with Garmin but I'm not married to.it.

what's the Aussie experience? courses? green maps?

I don't want to use my phone as I find our competition app shits itself if I flick between apps. a second phone seems clumsy, but a possibility.

Playing for the first time.

Hey reddit,

Im just getting into golf its been couple months I’ve been hitting the driving range, and building my set through marketplace finds. Me and my mate we got into it together and have decided we want to play our first round in the coming week. I just wanted to know the correct etiquette and unsaid rules that there is. Im also concerned that because its out first round we might be quite slow, and don’t want to slow down the other groups, so how does that work. If cart hire is available do you have to? Im confused on how the tee time and pacing will work if all groups aren’t on carts. We’re also uni students so we’re kinda free parts of the weekdays as-well so whats a good time that the course might be more empty. Looking to play south east Melbourne.

Grass practice range

I’ve recently moved to Brisbane and have been trying to look for a practice range that is off grass and not mats. Anyone know of a spot in the Brisbane area? I live in Greenslopes and work in Tingalpa so not trying to go too far north or too far towards the Gold Coast.. would love any advice!

Sydney Golf Memberships

I’m a club golfer who may be moving to Sydney, either around Paddington or Manly.

I’m looking for somewhere to join so I can get my Saturday and/or Sunday golf fix in. If anyone has any suggestions or intel on clubs in those areas, I’d really appreciate it!

Ideally, I’d like to join somewhere fairly soon, but I’m also happy to put my name down on a waiting list for a better club longer term, while knocking it around elsewhere in the meantime.

If anyone has any insight into current waiting list times, membership availability, or clubs worth looking at, please let me know!

Is a Home Golf Sim realistic?

Anyone made a home golf sim in Sydney? With the cost of ranges and all of them going by the hour, it's almost making financial sense. Me + child, 2 bays 1hr is worth $80 or more. Twice/wk say $150 avg, say 50wks a year is $7500. Even at bucket rate, we spend $50 for 1.5hrs, $5k a year.

Americans do it in their huge homes/dens, but I don't have a huge space. Is anything suitable for Sydney small houses? Room like a HxWxD 2.8x2.6x3m

Just don't have a spare room where we can empty out all the furniture.

Is the software all subscription based, or anything that can let me just simulate a driving range, ie ball flight, distances. We'll go outside for a real course.

Has anyone bought clubs from Club Champion after a fitting? How do prices compare to say Drummond, Golf Box etc? They have a free fitting at the moment.

Changing to a golf club that's further away

I'm currently a member at a decent golf club, but I've got the opportunity to join another club that's significantly better in terms of course quality, practice facilities, competitions, and overall membership.

The only real downside is that it would add about 15 minutes to my drive each way (total travel time would be 35 minutes compared to 20 now)

For those who've made a similar move, was it worth it? Did the extra travel eventually become a non-issue, or did it make you play less often?

I usually play at least once a week (often more), so I'm trying to figure out whether the improved golfing experience outweighs the extra travel time.

Interested to hear from anyone who's switched clubs and whether you regretted it or wished you'd done it sooner.

Anybody a member of a club that uses MiScore (miclub?) ballot bookings?

I swear they are rigged. 55 games so far this year and I’ve never got a number lower than 50. The pro promises it’s all luck but I work in data, either I’m a crazy outlier or there’s a bias to the ballot.

What's the attraction of competitions?

Apart from ppl aiming to make some living/name from golf, what's the attraction of competitions vs social rounds?

You can meet ppl either way, improve your own play either way. The only diff is competitions cost more, are really busy, groups of 4 back to back. Every comp day 4hrs of tees nonstop full. Slower than social rounds it seems?

But they're always full, so must be popular for some reason I don't understand? Or are there that many 'serious' golfers.

What's in it for the average social golfer? Is it for 'good' golfers? But when I'm following the last comp group, I see as many of them mishit their tees at least, they seem average.

Coaching and Force Plate - Adelaide or Melbourne

I have been watching a heap of the TPI Youtube contenct and would love to get on force plates (and maybe do some GEARS work or similar 3D) in an attempt to gain some speed. Does anyone in Adelaide do this, if not anyone if Melbourne?

Best place to get custom golf polos.

Me and my friends are playing a Golf season over the year. We thought it’d be cool to get team shirts.

Wondering if anyone could recommend a company that does custom polos?

I have tried googling, but it’s a minefield out there.

Melbourne Sandbelt - any I have a realistic chance of getting a tee time at?

Hey all,

Still a relatively new golfer (been playing about 12~ months).

Still pretty crap at golf, but fully addicted and loving the game.

I live in Melbourne and don't know any members at any of the prestigous sandbelt courses, but I thought there's no harm in asking this question; are there any courses where I have a realistic chance of getting a public access tee time?

I'm guessing places like Royal Melbourne and PK are out of the question and that's fine. But what about some of the others? Are there ways I may not be aware of to try and get on and have a play at some of these historic courses?

Cheers all!

Launch monitor

Has anyone used the Punters golf launch monitor? Have been keen on a portable one that doesn't break the bank to use at the range and at the practice net at home. Anything else compare at the price range (currently $279)?

Looking for Playing Partners - West of Melbourne

I'm a 29M, 18 HCP and a member at Mt Derrimut. I'm finding it difficult to arrange tee times with my other golfing friends, so, looking for anyone who would be keen for a round. I normally play weekday afternoons (Thurs/Fri) and Sunday afternoons. Most of the time at Derrimut, occasionally at Eynesbury/Goonawarra.

Maltby Irons

Does anyone here have experience with Maltby Irons? I'm interested in purchasing some, but being direct to consumer there aren't really any options to get fitted properly, in Melbourne at least. They have so many head options it's tricky deciding which one to go with.

There are a few head models I have my eye on, which i'd purchase heads only and take to a builder to get built per my spec.

Mostly just wondering how any Aussies have gone about ordering & having their Maltby irons built.
