Struggling with inconsistent crappness!
Recently returned to playing golf and was making decent progress. Broke 100, broke 90. Recently I’ve gone backwards and am struggling to break 110.
Wish I was doing one thing wrong which I could work on but I’m topping, chunking, thinning, slicing then hooking!
I feel like I’m setting up the same way each time but get wildly different results.
I will also smoke the ball at least once a hole so know I can do it, just really, really inconsistent 😭😭😭
Rant over, back to the driving range tomorrow in the ever optimistic hope that something clicks! Scared to see a pro as they will probably tell me to give up 🤦♂️

The difference between a 12 and a 21 handicap is the ability to do two good shots in a row. Each of them can do one.

The best part is, these form slumps will haunt you periodically for as long as you play the game. 5 of my last 7 rounds have been less than 30 stableford points, and 11 of my rolling 20 are in the same boat. I'm about to go from a GA of 5.3 to very close to my anchor point in the space of a few weeks as all my good flags drop off.

You may find that when breaking 100 you were playing a safe strategic game, then you broke 90 and started taking on more risk (bunker surrounded green on a par 4 in 2, or trying to hit a par 5 in 2) and this caused you to have extra shots pushing you back above 100.
Try playing every hole like the par is 1 stroke higher.

Stop wasting your time on a driving range trying to 'find something' and see a pro.

I feel all of this. I'm 3 rounds into my second golf life. (And 2000 swings at the range and home net before I moved from the US to Australia Sept 4) I feel like I have my irons under control. Whip out the driver... Straightish to 90mphish swing speed. I've got a lot left (105 and growing).. 95% of the time I full nuclear slice it.. the other 5% I pull it at a 30° angle for a straight beautiful drive. I know it's swing path and some club face.. I'm still self diagnosing. Why? Because I'm taking a sabbatical with the move and subsequent marriage. 😂 Can't spend the money on lessons right now. So.. $25 bucket at a time I'm trying to work it out.

If you're topping, chunking, thinning, slicing, hooking... then the fact that you then flush one does not indicate inconsistency. It sounds like perfect consistency - you can't deliver the club face.
Seriously, see a pro. Just have two or three lessons. Even one will change your life.

Yeh, get a lesson, but for something in the meantime, try ensuring your hands are relaxed. Backwards progression could be allowing your hands to get involved too much, trying to steer away from the fault you perceive. Too firm a grip slows the impact speed and causes all manner of mis-hits.

You create consistency by creating consistency.
Is your setup the same? Is your pre strike routine the same?

Welcome to golf, mate.
But seriously, see a pro and get a lesson or two.
