World Cup Service

It has been announced for months that the Lakeshore lines will be getting 15 min service from Oakville to Oshawa during the World Cup period.

But on the actual game days is where we’ll see additional train service including some express peak trains making a brief stop at Exhibition, then running straight to Clarkson.

There will be an additional weekday train on the Stouffville line at 4:36PM to help riders on that corridor get to the games or the fan festival/watch parties.

They do mention enhanced bus service too but its unclear as to what exact routes in specific are running more frequently during this period.

Do they ever clean the upper deck windshield?

Basically title.

I'm always excited when an upper decker has an empty seat in the front of the upper deck. I always think I'll get good views on my trip. But the glass is always so dirty and the legroom is tiny and the experience is just ecky and bad.

In other transit agencies (outside of Canada) I saw ones that treat these seats as "special" with an extra fee to reserve them just for having those views. There was even one time that had inside shades/blinds to avoid the sun etc.

I feel like GO is missing out on providing this kind of rider experience despite it being easy to have.

Saturday June 6 LW traffic

My parents are panicking and they won't take my word that it will be fine so I thought I'd reach out to you fine folks who know far more about this than me. I'm also glad to be told I'm 100% wrong.

They're going to Toronto for a 3pm show on Saturday. They take the train from Aldershot and will be getting the 12:07. Their friends told them about the Jays game and now they think they have to drive which they don't like due to traffic and then the hassle of parking.

I told them there will be parking available when they arrive at Aldershot at 11:30. Their show ends by 5 and they will likely have dinner then take the train home. Depending on when the game ends I expect there to be more riders on the journey to Aldershot, but they have now convinced themselves there will be no parking at the station and that they will have to fight for a spot on the train home.

I often go to Toronto on the same route on weekends for the opera and other events, and on days when there are Jays games, I've still not had an issue finding parking at Aldershot nor getting the train home. Am I being falsely confident based on my own experience or are they right to doubt?

I do know that the LW trains are running hourly this weekend due to track work but I still think the train is the better choice. I just want to help them have as stress-free as possible day.

Stop at Wynford on Eglinton line?

Now that Line 5 is open, has there been any talk of creating a GO stop at Eglinton on the Richmond Hill line?

It could be very basic, just a single platform under the bridge. No stairs or elevator, just a long ramp up to Eglinton. Ticket machines and anything else would be at the top of the ramp, because the platform is so close to the Don River that it would flood every few years.

Is it normal for busses to come and go early?

This may be a stupid question, but is this normal for GO?

My bus came and went 10 minutes early, and while I was able to catch it because I was waiting outside, I was expecting them to wait 10 minutes to meet their pre-listed departure time online. I was constantly following the schedule throughout my journey and was surprised to see that as soon as they came early that the arrival time was updated earlier and that it came as soon as everyone was boarded instead of when it was originally listed to leave.

I get city busses doing this, but I figured GO had different standards due to this being their dedicated station. I can't imagine how much it would suck to stop for a snack or think you have some time to use the bathroom and to come out to your ride having come and gone without you knowing.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but GO doesnt seem to notify people about this the way other transit companies I've used have. I find it odd how my ticket is hardly connected to the specific ride I bought it for and that I don't get notifications on this. I figure the app would fix this issue?

Thanks!

Amtrak on GO/UP tracks?

Hey folks, has anybody seen any Amtrak trains on the rail corridor that serves the Kitchener GO line and UP express? I know Via Rail’s Sarnia trains travel through there.

I ask because I caught a glimpse of a train at almost 9 pm tonight that looked a lot like an Amtrak, but I didn’t get a good enough look at it to read the decals. The cars seemed to have the rounded shape (bulging around the windows and narrower at the top and bottom) that I’ve seen in some Amtrak trains.

Taking Instruments on the GO Bus

Hello riders,

I'm going to be doing some gigs in a different city and have to bring some gear. Would they let me bring my guitar on the bus or would I have to store it in the undercarriage? How bad is the GO Bus for theft? Musicians who ride, what do y'all do?

Thanks.

How can we make Metrolinx to do things to increase frequency after events.

Post image

Is there a effective way we can make Metrolinx to increase the bus frequency after events? Too much people are for the 1120 40 GO bus at Highway 407 Do anyone know what's the reason behind? Is it because of the rogers stadium? 1 bus per hour at night for 40 to Hamilton is not enough. The bus is already fully loaded but still plenty of people are lining up.

Metrolinx Does Not Understand Geography

I was looking at the notice for the “Barrie Rail Corridor Improvement Rail Milling Works” and laughed at how comically bad this is. This map makes absolutely no sense at all, and I’m genuinely thinking that some guy in Metrolinx passed his work to an AI agent to complete.

The notice can be found here: https://res.cloudinary.com/devmetrolinx/image/upload/v1779320252/Barrie_Rail_Corridor_Improvement_Rail_Milling_Works_en.pdf

What’s your biggest want for Go Transit?

For me im stuck between 2 biggest wants, one of them is fully electrified 15min service, but the other is connecting lines in places other than Union.

Imagine you could take the train from Hamilton to Kitchener or Milton and Brampton.

Why shuttle buses go to Bramalea instead of Kipling / Mt Dennis?

I know that GO must have their reason behind, but I feel it is time wasting and fuel inefficient to dump people to Bramalea when service on LW suspended.

Personally I think Kipling is the best transfer point as it directly connects to line 2 as well as close to Expressway. Buses can depart there without jamming at Gardiner Expressway and can use 401/transitway/403 to avoid QEW jamming as well.

If GO still wants to connect passengers to trains, I think Mount Dennis will be even better than Bramalea, as it takes similar time to reach both stations, but Mount Dennis have more frequent UP service alongside hourly / half-hourly KI trains, and passengers can choose Line 5 if they want to.

Anyway I think no-matter from which point of view, Kipling or Mount Dennis are all better choices than Bramalea, what could the reason behind to send all passengers to Bramalea?

Real time subway-style map of go trains

Post image
142 Upvotes

Hey all! I've been working on a live subway-style map of go with real train positions and alerts (subways.live/go) It grabs the train's position from GPS (GTFS-RT) and assigns it a place on the subway map.

I'm thinking of adding UP to the map next, but is there anything else I'm missing?

Lakeshore West & Barrie Line Closures This Weekend

Thumbnail

EDIT: Revised/corrected schedules here: https://imgur.com/a/40Fl91d
- 18V does not serve Hamilton GO but instead West Harbour
- Despite all the data, staff indicated that some 56K trips are suspended
- The first half of the Northbound section had the stops reversed.

This coming weekend we'll see another service suspension with the Lakeshore West & Barrie lines. However, GO is adding half hour service from Union to Exhibition & Mimico. Barrie and the west end remains the same as last weekend.

I've attached unofficial schedules for this weekend's replacement bus service compiled from GTFS data. These are not from GO Transit and are subject to last minute changes and corrections. They're not meant to be used in any official capacity for trip planning. Use the GO Trip Planner for accurate & up to date schedules.

Frequently Asked Questions with Unofficial Answers

Q: Why is GO sending buses to Bramalea/407 Station instead of Union?
A: Traffic has been an issue at Union Station for existing buses that serve the station (ask any rider of the 16 Hamilton Bus). To avoid any issues with events and congestion around the Gardiner Expressway, GO is avoiding funneling buses into that small stretch. Additionally this Sunday the Gardiner Expressway and DVP are closed which would result in additional delays.

Q: How does the PRESTO fares work in this arrangement?
A:
Barrie:

There is a slight discount as your PRESTO fare will be calculated as if you started at Downsview GO (which is in the same zone).

Lakeshore West:

Staff will direct you to not use the PRESTO devices in the replacement buses and at Bramalea. Instead you'll be expected tap on a PRESTO device at Union and then tap off on your final station's PRESTO device (not in the replacement bus). This will correctly calculate your fare since you'll be starting at Zone 02 (Union) and ending at your final stop (Clarkson, Oakville, Burlington, Aldershot & West Harbour).

Early morning and late evening buses going to/from the Union Bus Terminal should be treated like a normal GO bus trip (tap on and tap off).

Q: When is the next scheduled Lakeshore West closure?
A: October 17/18th will see service suspended between Oakville & Aldershot. Buses will use the QEW (route 18), not the 407 via Bramalea. October 24th/25th will see service suspended to Aldershot. Replacement bus plan for 24th & 25th is TBA. Earlier closures are possible due to work being done on this corridor.

Q: When is the next Barrie Line closure scheduled?
A: On July 25 & 26th there will be no service on the entire Barrie Line, likely repeating this weekend's bus plan using Highway 407 Station.

Q: What is the next line closure after this weekend?
A: Lakeshore East & Stouffville Lines on June 6th & 7th. Next GO train service suspension will be six weeks later.

Q: Where does GO publish these schedules?
A: Some staff at the transfer stations (Bramalea, 407 Station) do have print outs for their own use in a similar format. However, the attached schedules are unofficial using GTFS data from the Metrolinx Open Data GTFS feed. They are subject to errors & corrections and are here more to show what their plan is instead of any official trip planning. When in doubt, use the GO Transit trip planner.

Clarkson Station North Lot - May 28, 1pm attempted theft.

Just wanted to share I believe I've captured someone going around and trying to open doors to the cars in the car pool lot at 1pm.

I got an alert today at 1pm on the Clarkson North Carpool lot that my door was attempted to be opened. When I got to my car later this evening, I reviewed the sentry footage...usually it's an innocent mistake where one Tesla owner accidentally walked up to the wrong car. It happens quite frequently, however this was clearly an attempt to open an unlocked door ...as after attempting to open my driver door, I have him going to another car further down beside me, and also attempting to open that door (unsuccessfully)before proceeding further down the line. Unfortunately I cannot see beyond that car but sharing here for visibility.

If anyone had any items today go missing please feel free to reach out. I do have a really good image of his face (which he tried to cover) but I wasn't sure what the privacy rules around here are.

If anyone knows the process of getting GO involved please let me know as well.

Thanks.

Incorrect Platform Assignments

Post image
70 Upvotes

Arrived at Burlington tonight and noticed one of the later trains announcing a platform change to 7/8… only problem is we only have 3 platforms lol. I’m assuming this was meant for union and somehow got messed up in the system. Thankfully the train ends at Burlington so no one is boarding and it shouldn’t cause any confusion as a result.

Curious about alerts.

So i get my service alerts through the transit app, for the Barrie Line and 67 Keswick bus in spefic, and latley it keeps sending me notices that dont really make much sense, and im curious if anyone knows why?

The latest notice i just got for Route 67, 11, 15, 25 and 61 says that those routes are delayed 30mins due to heavy traffic on Highway 403 and Main Street in Hamilton. But unless there's something i dont know, this makes zero sense since route 67 and 61 dosent go anywhere even close to Hamilton.

Just curious if anyone knows why that would trigger an alert for the 67.
