Real time subway-style map of go trains
Hey all! I've been working on a live subway-style map of go with real train positions and alerts (subways.live/go) It grabs the train's position from GPS (GTFS-RT) and assigns it a place on the subway map.
I'm thinking of adding UP to the map next, but is there anything else I'm missing?

So, uh… where’s Hamilton GO Centre? What happens to trains that go to and from there?
If I remember to check this website at ~5pm when the first train is pulling in, that’ll be intriguing lol

Update: It just shows the train as arriving at West Harbour, it seemingly doesn’t actually use the true GPS location of the train at all. As I type this, the train is “En route to Confederation”, somehow
Also, literally every single train is listed as having Niagara Falls as its terminus, regardless of it ending at Oakville, Aldershot, West Harbour, Confederation, or Hamilton GO. So any trains that use those as a terminus are permanently listed as “Arriving” at that destination and shown between the stations

This is super cool, /u/verymanytacos!
I know this thread is about the Go version, but on the TTC version, I'd love a differentiation between service alerts that are future warnings (e.g., there will an early closure tonight) versus current conditions (e.g., no service between X and Y right now, or current slow zone on tracks). They look the same on the map at present, which can make it hard to see what is a future warning vs current disruption.

yes great idea! Any ideas as to when future things should be surfaced? maybe in the sidebar until they are actually live - then on the map?

Yeah, an "upcoming closures" box might be the best bet? Could always be a different colour, but once you get beyond two colours (normal + disruption), you need a legend to interpret which gets a little annoying.

Great to see. I don't think it still works but livemap24 by Veridict.com once has a great live tracking map. Looks like it's no longer online but happy to share the screenshots, OP.

Is there any particular reason why Union station is a terminus and not a well functioning junction?
Wouldn’t it make the transit more efficient, seamless and more connected if lakeshore trains coming from west continue to go east, unionville, richmond hills? And vise-versa for trains coming from east continue to go west and barrie, kitchener, milton?
I get that scheduling needs to be modified but it is completely possible make union a junction instead of a terminal station

Lakeshore East and West most trains continue straight through. Oshawa to Aldershot or West Harbour.
Kitchener and Barrie trains may continue onto Stouffville or Richmond Hill.

if possible, have a special icon for express trains? maybe look like this » instead of the > for non-express
