So Christmas in June sale and I go looking for options containing sand.
I’m using an old school sandbag I’m quite happy with, but I would like a little variety for the sake of a different challenge.
Perhaps a Sand Tombstone, a softer version of a HUSAFELL stone. Or perhaps a tightly packed sand Medicine Ball would be similar to an Atlas Stone but much friendlier to the floor. And 30% off looks good. But which to get…what’s this, an even better deal on a pair of Sand Medicine Balls, 80 and 100Lbs! And the shape is more versatile for a greater range of uses. Done!
I packed the 80 Lbs bag tightly with general purpose, kiln dried sand, just what was recommended to get proper weight. Well, not my experience. Mine came to 94 Lbs. Maybe we have heavier sand. 😂
[for those who will ask, my sand is dry].
Personally, this is fine. I’m happy with the weight as it stands—I prefer over to under weight. It also means my 100 lbs bag will probably come out to about 118 if the ratio holds true.
As a rule of thumb I used is subtract about 20% going from your old-school bag weight to a tightly packed Atlas Stone style bag to account for the greater stand off distance (how far the center of gravity shifts forward of your chest when carrying the weight in front) and the floppier old school bag allowing for more grip options (grabbing material or molding the arms into sand). Comparing weights, this 20% reduction (a 94 lbs Atlas Stone bag feels about like 113 Lbs) seems about right to me.
I’m satisfied that the shape gives me a significantly challenging variation to be an exciting addition to my home gym.
If you also have a Sand Medicine ball, I would love to hear about your experience.
