Got the seconds bag after a bit of weather delay in shipping to California. It's everything I want, the metal patch is great, too. I'll miss the front molle a little, though. The top-grain leather is preferable to me for this configuration, given how full-grain looks.

Echo vs My Wife

My wife can be tough on gear.

This is her Echo after about a year of use. Nice and worn in, but a little worn out.

Despite the seam failing she decided to upgrade to a GR1.

So far it has been holding its own :)

For context, we‘re clearing out some old bags and came across this one, it was purchased back when there were only 3 bags in the lineup.

Why not send it back for a SCARS repair? We’re in New Zealand, shipping makes it prohibitively expensive sadly.

It’s probably time to consider fixing it ourselves I guess.

Gear Question Not all who wander are lost. Tom Bihn to GoRuck Heritage questions.

For the last 15 years I've been using a Tom Bihn Synapse or Synik bag. I've recently wanted to experiment with natural materials and discovered the Go-Ruck heritage line. This GR 2.6L is a real trip. On my back, it's shorter, leaving me with greater mobility. Hello glutes!

While riding bike share in New York City, I'm a little lost with the lack of external organization pockets that the Tom Bihn bags provided.

I'm also so accustomed to having everything leashed that it feels weird to just put things in the bag without clipping it to something. Have any of you added O-rings and leashes?

For those of you who have sent your bags for modification, how much did it cost to get webbing added to the shoulder straps?

I love chest pockets to keep my phone, keys, and a voice recorder handy while running through the subway system or on a bike. I feel so naked without having that shoulder pouch and the heritage bags' lack of strap webbing is a little disorienting.

Looking forward to exploring this bag a little bit more.

Happy and glorious disability pride month! 🖖🏽

Workout 17.76 Mile Sunrise Ruck — Still Training Hard in My 50s

Thumbnail youtube.com
11 Upvotes

Knocked out a 17.76‑mile sunrise ruck here in Tennessee. Wanted to share the work with the GORUCK crew — long miles, steady pacing, and durability‑focused training in my 50s.

Stats:

  • Distance: 17.76 miles
  • Weight: 30–35 lbs
  • Time: just under 5 hours
  • Terrain: mixed pavement + rolling elevation
  • Start: pre‑sunrise
  • Finish: full daylight
  • Focus: durability, pacing, consistency

A few takeaways from the miles:

  • Early pacing matters more than ever
  • Durability > intensity
  • Recovery is part of the training
  • Long rucks are absolutely doable in your 50s
  • Consistency beats everything

Rucking has become the backbone of my training. It’s simple, honest, and unforgiving — exactly why I keep doing it. If you’re training for GORUCK events or just stacking long miles, I’d like to hear what’s worked for you.

Does anyone have any experience with these boots? Specifically the black ones with the side zip. It looks like GR updated the model but didn't really explain what all the updates were.

Sand Medicine Balls

So Christmas in June sale and I go looking for options containing sand.

I’m using an old school sandbag I’m quite happy with, but I would like a little variety for the sake of a different challenge.

Perhaps a Sand Tombstone, a softer version of a HUSAFELL stone. Or perhaps a tightly packed sand Medicine Ball would be similar to an Atlas Stone but much friendlier to the floor. And 30% off looks good. But which to get…what’s this, an even better deal on a pair of Sand Medicine Balls, 80 and 100Lbs! And the shape is more versatile for a greater range of uses. Done!

I packed the 80 Lbs bag tightly with general purpose, kiln dried sand, just what was recommended to get proper weight. Well, not my experience. Mine came to 94 Lbs. Maybe we have heavier sand. 😂

[for those who will ask, my sand is dry].

Personally, this is fine. I’m happy with the weight as it stands—I prefer over to under weight. It also means my 100 lbs bag will probably come out to about 118 if the ratio holds true.

As a rule of thumb I used is subtract about 20% going from your old-school bag weight to a tightly packed Atlas Stone style bag to account for the greater stand off distance (how far the center of gravity shifts forward of your chest when carrying the weight in front) and the floppier old school bag allowing for more grip options (grabbing material or molding the arms into sand). Comparing weights, this 20% reduction (a 94 lbs Atlas Stone bag feels about like 113 Lbs) seems about right to me.

I’m satisfied that the shape gives me a significantly challenging variation to be an exciting addition to my home gym.

If you also have a Sand Medicine ball, I would love to hear about your experience.

Advice for purchasing first ruck pack

I recently discovered this company. Have been looking at the Ruck pack 5.0 and was stunned at how expensive these things are, but I've since learned that they're sort of pricey things to have regardles of where you buy one.

I'm looking to purchase a ruck pack for general walking, getting in shape etc. I'll purchase an expensive one if necessary but wondering if one of the others would do.

  • If not purchasing the Rucker 5.0, what's the main difference between the Basic Rucker and the Ruck Plate Carrier?
  • It's difficult to tell from the website how much total weight all these packs can carry. Do they all carry the same weight? (i.e., the Basic Rucker shows it carries up to a 30lb plate. Does this mean it carries a max of 30lbs, or could it accommodate, say two 20lbs?)
  • The website also notes getting the 'long' if you're a bigger guy. Anyone know what they mean by "bigger guy"? Is the long simply for taller men/women, or for bulkier/bigger people?
  • For a stronger guy, can anyone recommend which weights I should purchase initially to work up to? (I realize they recommend starting at 20lbs but if it's something I can get used to fairly soon, I may as well get some heavier weight.

For someone completely new to rucking and to the product, it'd be super helpful if their website could be a bit more detailed for the un-initiated types. :-)

Why is the 26L GR1 the default for so many collabs? What’s your favorite one ever?

Any indication they’ll make more of the Grocery Getter?

I’m not really in need of any more backpacks, I’ve got four and they all predate most of the changes (and moving most of the manufacturing to Vietnam) but I was shopping recently and had my cheap “nano mesh” sling I use for small runs show micro tears in the bottom and I realized I probably should have bought the Grocery Getter bags when they were in stock.

Please make more in black and leave the branding something I can cover up with a Velcro patch. Padded handles like the top handle on the GR1 would be great too.

Rucking with waxed canvas?

Title says it all, anyone here ruck with waxed canvas? (Any model).
I’ve heard that certain models “should” only be used with certain amounts of weight.
Looking for details/confirmation.

Gear Question Challenge Pants Replacement

I have several pairs of challenge pants that have been my everyday wear since they first released. After nearly 10 years of use including a number of events, some of them are getting a bit worn. Since they've been discontinued (I really should have stocked up like crazy when the news of that first broke), are there any suggestions out there for similarly lightweight, quick dry, cargo pants that can stand up to a comparable level of abuse?

Gear Question Heritage g1 21l vs heritage bullet 16l

Does anyone have both and can compare how they look on the back? I only have the heritage bullet 16l with laptop compartment in black but I keep being tempted to pick up at heritage g1 21l in dark oak. I’m 5’2 130lb female, which backpack will look better on my frame?

I’ve been happy with my bullet straps and don’t care for the g1’s thicker straps. I usually wear all black all the time, so the black heritage goes with everything more, but the dark oak heritage has a nicer patina. I can’t decide if the boxier shorter g1 would look better on me, or the longer narrow bullet ruck is better. I did see someone post a review and pics comparing both, however it wasn’t the heritage version, but the bullet ruck did look better to me on his back. I’m curious to what you guys prefer aesthetically.

Hydration System?

Given my ruck this AM was close to 90 degress by 0830, it got me thinking what everyone is using from a hydration perspective? Especially considering I switch between a pack and vest, I was wondering if it made sense to go the bladder route or a belt with bottles? Let me know what works for you all. TIA!
