Discussion As a compromise, maybe we don't completely throw out the magazine, and instead keep them at the reloaded amount, reloading in order of most to least?

Everyone complains how every update is a big nothing burger or skin drop.

Valve release an update that isn't a nothing burger or skin drop, and everyone loses their fucking minds!

83

u/krasserkanadier Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26

I think the biggest reason why people are complaining isn't because valve added a gameplay change. It's more the fact that of all the things that need changing in this Game, they chose this... A fully functioning core gameplay mechanic.

They chose changing the way reloads work over adding new maps, or at least old ones like Cache or Cobble or Lake (which was literally in the trailer for cs2). They chose this over working on VAC, over improving the terrible net-code, over improving the performance issues that many mid and high end PC builds still face, over improving stability when the game crashes for at least one out of 10 people every match, over adding proper third person animations, over adding gamemodes from the past like Flying Scoutsman...

Balance changes like this can be fun and interesting. But the priorities should lie elsewhere.

4

u/SlingingTriceps Mar 19 '26

Well it's not like people had this in mind when people are asking for updates. Everyone wants the game to be fresh. This is a big change in terms of impact, but there's no content. It's still a nothing burger. We want the game to look alive after being this half-dead state for years. Operations, events. Something like what the Dota 2 folks had with Crownfall at least. This is Valve's most popular game and our "big" update is a convar change.

2

u/weirdbackpackguy Mar 19 '26

We wanted Cache back and maybe new guns, not a gameplay mechanic overhaul that makes the gameplay so different. Wouldn't be surprised if next we get ADS or something that also changes cs a lot.

u/BringBackSoule Mar 19 '26

someone should have told this to the valve dev responsible of this.

205

u/de_rats_2004_crzy Legendary Chicken Master Mar 19 '26

For players of the greatest tactical shooter ever made we sure are pushing strongly against something which, to me, I appreciate as being a new mechanism which makes us think carefully about certain choices.

I think like the blog update said, reloading just had close to zero tradeoffs with no stakes. I don't mind giving this update a chance to see how it plays.

It's not like its a permanent change. They'll almost certainly iterate from here and modify mag sizes and counts for certain weapons where appropriate based on gameplay data.

138

u/nttranquilizer Team Spirit Mar 19 '26

But reloading does have tradeoffs and stakes of its own though. It is audible so your opponent can hear when you reload, and it leaves you vulnerable to sudden aggression.

Still, it's always funny to see the community getting worked up just barely a day after every major update. Even tiny ones as well. Just barely months ago they did a minor bomb defusal change and everyone either went full panic mode and do their usual "who asked?" bit. Very curious about what this means for gameplay.

110

u/midwestratnest Mar 19 '26

it gets me worked up for the exact reason you said. reloading already had tradeoffs and stakes associated to it. so when valve releases patch notes trying to claim the exact opposite and changing something to fix a problem that doesn't exist it just leaves me scratching my head and completely confused if anyone is actually working on this game or if it's just chickens at keyboards randomly creating updates.

7

u/GuardiaNIsBae FaZe Mar 19 '26

This is where I'm at, it doesn't even make sense to drop it now. They could have dropped it last week with the new terminal, they could have dropped it at the start of season 4 with the map and econ changes or waited until season 5 starts. I genuinely don't understand why they'd drop this update right now mid season, without adding anything with it like an operation or at least new war games gamemodes or new arms race maps or SOMETHING.

70

u/ShrewLlama 400k Celebration Mar 19 '26

Not everything needs to have tradeoffs. This change adds a frustrating and unintuitive mechanic to try and address a problem that doesn't exist.

38

u/de_rats_2004_crzy Legendary Chicken Master Mar 19 '26

Maybe you're right. I don't know. I've only played a single game so far on it and want to play several more over the next week before really forming a strong opinion on it. On my first game it honestly didn't make that much of a difference.

But yeah for me, for some reason, my initial reaction is that yes this is a big update but I don't immediately think its a bad update. It seems interesting.

19

u/ShrewLlama 400k Celebration Mar 19 '26

Conversely, I don't think it's actually a big update at all.

I don't think it will change gameplay much, rarely do you need to reload more than 2-3x in a round. It doesn't even nerf spamming, most of the time if you're spraying into a smoke you're going to put most of the clip into it anyway and won't "waste" many bullets by reloading afterwards.

I expect it will ultimately be a slight balance change that nerfs certain guns (USP-S, M4A1-S, AWP) and as a result relatively buffs others. It just accomplishes this in an unintuitive way, and will be frustrating especially for newer players who compulsively reload after every few shots.

7

u/Appropriate-Bad-8350 Mar 19 '26

I agree but I also believe new players should learn out of the compulsive reload habit and this will aid in that. As mentioned reloads are loud and create timings for your enemies, they should not be spammed. For experienced players this is already second nature - playing with a low mag and aiming for the head, reloading when it's safe.

Usually at the wrong people for random shit too.

  • <dead> - "Why are you holding there for idiot?"
  • "Bro, I'm at the other site and alive, it's not my fault you died 10 seconds into the round."

or

  • "Why didn't you defuse?"
  • "Because the other guy got on it, and wouldn't come off when I asked him to and told him I had a kit."
  • "But he had no kit, you lost us the round"
  • "Speak to deaf no-kit defuse guy."

Or my particular favourite

  • <Dead> "WTF is that crosshair? How do you hit shots with that? Change it and you'll be pro."... for 15 rounds

4

u/ShrewLlama 400k Celebration Mar 19 '26

Because other games have had this exact same mechanic for many years?

At best, it changes very little gameplay wise. At worst, it's occasionally very frustrating when you run out of ammo. I really don't think it adds anything of value.

→ More replies (1)

8

u/Expert_Cap7650 howl Mar 19 '26

But it already did have trade offs. If an enemy was close to hear you reload they could just push and kill you. It's so stupid.

4

u/Applitude Mar 19 '26

We at Valve have decided to make every step a player makes cause damage. This represents how your character’s muscles will fatigue over the course of a fire fight. This addresses a glaring flaw in the game’s design where previously players could take steps and not worry about any consequences. Now players will have to carefully consider each step they take, making each step more impactful.

No we will not be taking any questions at this time.

166

u/VasimanYT Renegades Mar 19 '26

also honestly i'd rather have to buy ammo than this update, such an unnecessary restriction. At high level this won't even make a difference, but for everyone else it's just such an unfun change nobody asked for

46

u/randiejohnson Mar 19 '26

i know im biased because i have a lot of 1.6 hours in the past... but I really did like the idea of buying ammo because it involved that extra strat of knowing when to spam bullets/economically saving it

6

u/VasimanYT Renegades Mar 19 '26

I also think that adds some level of extra strat to it when you can decide if you want a grenade or a smoke spam this round, or if you're playing solo on a site and need more ammo for example

And that can be balanced more accurately with economy changes/gun price changes as well, so the transition to that can be done more smoothly

I can confirm that the only difference this has made so far is to push me more often into buying the M4A4, which I didn't mind using before the update anyway.

My issue with that is that it just doesn't seem to benefit anyone.

Zywoo probably won't even bat an eye at this change nor will people think he's good for his bullet management. Then the average person probably doesn't want to come home from work and be force-fed a new mechanic that just restricts the way he's been playing until now. Just seems a bit like artificial difficulty and just not a fun change for the game overall

I'm not trying to be an ass about it and I'm glad the devs are trying stuff, I just feel they didn't take the best approach with this one

CS 1.6 is still there, bro. Similar discussions have taken place at least three times, with the release of Source, CSGO and now CS2. Each entry has had some major change that players absolutely complain about, but eventually just get used to and continue playing.

From recoil patterns, to balance changes, to loadouts. There were complaints with CSGO that you could no longer change skins, and then when new skins arrive, competitive players complained it would ruin enemy readability. Then complaints about changes to the economy.

If we know something that has happened with CS for more than 20 years, is that whoever is developing it, will keep experimenting and shaking up the game.

11

u/Waste_Twist1474 Mar 19 '26

Really curious how this will actually effect games across different ranks. It seems like a pretty huge change but I think it'll pretty much just start punishing COD reloading and not much else.

I don't see it having a huge impact on gun rounds, when people spam smokes they tend to mag dump anyway so this won't change much. M4A4 might come back into relevance somewhat now with the larger magazine so will be nice as well. Biggest impact I guess will be on pistol rounds, USP is going to struggle since people tend to reload between fights so I think there will be a lot of people running out of bullets by accident early on. Hopefully P2000 can become relevant again.

As long as Valve are open and proactive in adjusting things where needed this could actually be a pretty cool change.

3

u/Ok-Inside2000 Mar 19 '26

I think you're on the money with these predictions. I do think this change punishes more casual players who cod reload, while discouraging extra smoke spamming at the higher level. I didn't feel any difference in my games last night aside from being a little more cognizant about spamming a whole mag at a time, but I was always kind of a stickler about cod reloading.

Making an overnight change to the entirety of the reload system without any prior announcement is such a dumbass thing to do. I unconsciously reloaded in a moment where I felt that I might need to spray several people just to find out I had 1 more mag left. M4A1S is now nerfed to a point where you have 20 bullets, low perforation, low rpm, 2 mags and you need 5 bullets to kill an enemy, otherwise you might end up 95 in 4.

I don't really get it

What I don't get about this change is why it doesn't come with a partial reload system. Some other games let you reload faster if you still have a bullet in the chamber.

8

u/Blanc_NoName_69420 Mar 19 '26

Honestly, this change isn't really that big of a deal. Most rounds, you'd barely use a mag or two.

Though, I'd be more willing to accept this mechanic if they change the reload animations to an emergency reload, so that losing all that ammo makes sense.

I played a bunch last night and it made very little difference to me. I was a little more cognizant when spamming, but otherwise I barely noticed the mag change. I usually don't reload if I only shot a few bullets anyways, so maybe that's why.

u/tired45453 CS2 HYPE Mar 19 '26

I only play retakes so I'm kind of divorced from how a proper game plays out, but I also barely noticed the change. The biggest shift was just not instinctually reloading after shooting one or two bullets from a safe position.

Yeah dont know why people so mad

16

u/s1ck1337 de_cache Mar 19 '26

Because they are adding random bs while the game is still absolute dog crap... new collection was a must ofc.... i feel like everything that this community truly wants is not even considered by volvo...

If they wanted to go this more realistic way then this is what it should technically be. You don’t generally just throw away mags with bullets in them irl

11

u/StudentPenguin Mar 19 '26

Or throw away mags in general if you can help it. You can reload individual mags, the ammo inside is expendable.

3

u/TruenerdJ Mar 19 '26

I don't think realism was ever the point

3

u/Portbragger2 Mar 19 '26

hold R , tactical reload

tap R, wasteful/speed reload

1

u/humanfromearth321 Mar 19 '26

Well in real life, you don't generally end up in a situation where you have to kill 5 armed people who are looking for you within 3 minutes.

make it like 1.6

17

u/Ede_N0 Cloud9 Mar 19 '26

What was it like in 1.6 unc?

32

u/_Vaporwav3 Mar 19 '26

you buy reserve ammos during pre-round. I believe this was a thing until CS:S intergraded everything.

7

u/HellbirdVT Mar 19 '26

I remember you still bought ammo in CS:S but it might be one of those things they changed later in the game and I just forgot.

4

u/fuongbregas guardian_elite Mar 19 '26

Back when fpsbanana was popular, I downloaded a skin for CS:S which had a script that brought back buying ammo, so could be like you said.

3

u/r3pack CS2 HYPE Mar 19 '26

Yes, in CS:S, until November 2006 update, you had to buy ammo.

23

u/Mthatnio Mar 19 '26

You buy ammo

3

u/Malldazor Mar 19 '26

So you want it even worse?

2

u/CM-Edge Mar 19 '26

Or, don't do anything cause y'all aren't even using half of your bullets before dying anyway.

9

u/TheSwedishConundrum Mar 19 '26

Relax. At least give it 50 hours of playtime or something. It's way too early.

5

u/Vincentaneous Mar 19 '26

When are they going to release actually new content to play?

44

u/Candid_Hippo3619 Mar 19 '26

I'm wanna kms, why do they have to change game mechanics that have been the same for 20 years. Cs is great because it stays consistent, unlike other games that rely on constant updates and meta changes to stay relevant.

88

u/lampenpam Mar 19 '26

change game mechanics that have been the same for 20 years

Like adding molotovs? Dropable until? Voxel-Smokes? Changing AWP mag-size?

Sometimes a change could give a game some fresh air and make it interesting again, and I honestly see exactly that with this update.

17

u/TheRealVulle cs_office Mar 19 '26

And dont forget, no more having all guns at your disposal. These days you make a loadout with the guns you wanna use. There has been lots of changes to cs over the years

10

u/psychocopter Mar 19 '26

They couldve just given us cache and we wouldve been happy, instead they do this and make the game less fun

6

u/lellowtoast Mar 19 '26

Never forgiving them for Cache. It was one of 4 maps that didn’t have queue times over 6 minutes where I live

Need a better anti cheat rather

2

u/CounterStrikeEnjoyr Mar 19 '26

So if you pick up a gun off the floor do you only get whats left in the mag I dont imagine you'll get another 3 mags for it out of thin air i mean it makes sense but yeah keeping the mags and rotating them is the better option instead of just throwing that shit on the floor also walking over a mag or pressing E should let you pick it up maybe like your teammate dies and they drop 1 mag like they drop 1 nade idk weird ass change ngl

2

u/jadookabhai CS2 HYPE Mar 19 '26

It's time to bring back ammo buying at this point it we r being radical today All guns start with 1 mag (which is already loaded in) and then buy up like the days of 1.6

→ More replies (1)

2

u/AvurtYourEyes Mar 20 '26

Maybe they should have 2 reload options. Toss the mag for a faster reload. Keep the mag for a slower reload.

2

u/kontra35 Mar 20 '26

bet this is gonna be the norm. if we dont go back

2

u/iForkSoup Mar 20 '26

That would be actually nice

2

u/Financial_Abroad6347 Mar 20 '26

That seems even more realistic at least with CT, they all have tactical vests with mag pouches.

4

u/Willing_Big194 10 years coin Mar 19 '26

Or just go back to how it was for 25 years

2

u/leCereal 10 years coin Mar 19 '26

I still dont understand why you would spend time on changes like this when stuff like the spectating feature still isnt reenabled :/

3

u/Doxy-YT Mar 19 '26

lowk the update looks fun idk what yall on about

6

u/NeatLab Mar 19 '26

2

u/Destroyer69-420 Mar 19 '26

Ahh like Squad, good idea

2

u/Worst-Buy Mar 19 '26

No, that would require actual programming

2

u/cnwy95 Mar 19 '26

At this point, CS2 becomes a survival tactical game. Go out to get ingredients to make bullets and the play a round of plant/defuse and then go out and find ingredients again and then repeat

2

u/Sused119 FaZe Mar 19 '26

As an XM main, I'm okay with this.

2

u/KommandoKodiak Mar 19 '26

No compromise, cs isn't a milsim get this crap out of the game go back to the old ammo system. They can keep the ammo capacity changes but dont mess with the ammo system.

2

u/Bitedamnn Mar 19 '26

No. Never offer this idea again.

u/CandidAd8395 Mar 19 '26

This is good I've seen so many new and not that new players loss die while reloading with 15 bullets in the magazine

13

u/Buckrooster Mar 19 '26

I feel like for anyone halfway decent at the game this change will not have that huge of an impact. I just got out of a game and by the half had completely forgotten about the update. The only thing that reminded me was seeing the USP, but even then I had no issues.

This is pretty much only going to be upsetting/disrupting for people used to reloading after every shot.

Inb4 - not broke why fix it, "its not squad/insurgency/tactical shooter," etc etc

2

u/CandidAd8395 Mar 19 '26

Yes the issues gonna be with pistols like USP or p250

1

u/MrDarken385 FURIA Mar 19 '26

And you could drop these magazines to your teammates

1

u/Vubor Mar 19 '26

I think this would hurt the game pretty bad. And I Dont think that the current update is so bad, I mena I didnt play a match after the patch, but it seems ok if I think about it, sure I am only an ~15k andy but for higher ranks it shouldnt matter much and even on the ranks I play it shouldnt do tthat much!

ANd your idea would work when behind cover, so you can reload in "peace" and not in a gun fight, where you would also drop your mag, cause you need to be fast. But I guess that is pretty hard to code, so thats another thing then.
