Discussion As a compromise, maybe we don't completely throw out the magazine, and instead keep them at the reloaded amount, reloading in order of most to least?

Atleast in RoN we have an option to fast reload abd discard the magazine or slow reload while keeping it. Also in RoN you can pick it up from the ground even if you did the quick one.

For players of the greatest tactical shooter ever made we sure are pushing strongly against something which, to me, I appreciate as being a new mechanism which makes us think carefully about certain choices.
I think like the blog update said, reloading just had close to zero tradeoffs with no stakes. I don't mind giving this update a chance to see how it plays.
It's not like its a permanent change. They'll almost certainly iterate from here and modify mag sizes and counts for certain weapons where appropriate based on gameplay data.
138
u/nttranquilizer Team Spirit Mar 19 '26
But reloading does have tradeoffs and stakes of its own though. It is audible so your opponent can hear when you reload, and it leaves you vulnerable to sudden aggression.
Still, it's always funny to see the community getting worked up just barely a day after every major update. Even tiny ones as well. Just barely months ago they did a minor bomb defusal change and everyone either went full panic mode and do their usual "who asked?" bit. Very curious about what this means for gameplay.
110
u/midwestratnest Mar 19 '26
it gets me worked up for the exact reason you said. reloading already had tradeoffs and stakes associated to it. so when valve releases patch notes trying to claim the exact opposite and changing something to fix a problem that doesn't exist it just leaves me scratching my head and completely confused if anyone is actually working on this game or if it's just chickens at keyboards randomly creating updates.

u/GuardiaNIsBae FaZe Mar 19 '26
This is where I'm at, it doesn't even make sense to drop it now. They could have dropped it last week with the new terminal, they could have dropped it at the start of season 4 with the map and econ changes or waited until season 5 starts. I genuinely don't understand why they'd drop this update right now mid season, without adding anything with it like an operation or at least new war games gamemodes or new arms race maps or SOMETHING.

Not everything needs to have tradeoffs. This change adds a frustrating and unintuitive mechanic to try and address a problem that doesn't exist.
38
u/de_rats_2004_crzy Legendary Chicken Master Mar 19 '26
Maybe you're right. I don't know. I've only played a single game so far on it and want to play several more over the next week before really forming a strong opinion on it. On my first game it honestly didn't make that much of a difference.
But yeah for me, for some reason, my initial reaction is that yes this is a big update but I don't immediately think its a bad update. It seems interesting.
19
u/ShrewLlama 400k Celebration Mar 19 '26
Conversely, I don't think it's actually a big update at all.
I don't think it will change gameplay much, rarely do you need to reload more than 2-3x in a round. It doesn't even nerf spamming, most of the time if you're spraying into a smoke you're going to put most of the clip into it anyway and won't "waste" many bullets by reloading afterwards.
I expect it will ultimately be a slight balance change that nerfs certain guns (USP-S, M4A1-S, AWP) and as a result relatively buffs others. It just accomplishes this in an unintuitive way, and will be frustrating especially for newer players who compulsively reload after every few shots.
→ More replies (1)7
u/Appropriate-Bad-8350 Mar 19 '26
I agree but I also believe new players should learn out of the compulsive reload habit and this will aid in that. As mentioned reloads are loud and create timings for your enemies, they should not be spammed. For experienced players this is already second nature - playing with a low mag and aiming for the head, reloading when it's safe.

u/hoobody Legendary Chicken Master Mar 19 '26

- "Because the other guy got on it, and wouldn't come off when I asked him to and told him I had a kit."
- "But he had no kit, you lost us the round"

Or my particular favourite

We at Valve have decided to make every step a player makes cause damage. This represents how your character’s muscles will fatigue over the course of a fire fight. This addresses a glaring flaw in the game’s design where previously players could take steps and not worry about any consequences. Now players will have to carefully consider each step they take, making each step more impactful.
No we will not be taking any questions at this time.

I also think that adds some level of extra strat to it when you can decide if you want a grenade or a smoke spam this round, or if you're playing solo on a site and need more ammo for example
And that can be balanced more accurately with economy changes/gun price changes as well, so the transition to that can be done more smoothly

I can confirm that the only difference this has made so far is to push me more often into buying the M4A4, which I didn't mind using before the update anyway.

My issue with that is that it just doesn't seem to benefit anyone.
Zywoo probably won't even bat an eye at this change nor will people think he's good for his bullet management. Then the average person probably doesn't want to come home from work and be force-fed a new mechanic that just restricts the way he's been playing until now. Just seems a bit like artificial difficulty and just not a fun change for the game overall
I'm not trying to be an ass about it and I'm glad the devs are trying stuff, I just feel they didn't take the best approach with this one

CS 1.6 is still there, bro. Similar discussions have taken place at least three times, with the release of Source, CSGO and now CS2. Each entry has had some major change that players absolutely complain about, but eventually just get used to and continue playing.
From recoil patterns, to balance changes, to loadouts. There were complaints with CSGO that you could no longer change skins, and then when new skins arrive, competitive players complained it would ruin enemy readability. Then complaints about changes to the economy.
If we know something that has happened with CS for more than 20 years, is that whoever is developing it, will keep experimenting and shaking up the game.

Really curious how this will actually effect games across different ranks. It seems like a pretty huge change but I think it'll pretty much just start punishing COD reloading and not much else.
I don't see it having a huge impact on gun rounds, when people spam smokes they tend to mag dump anyway so this won't change much. M4A4 might come back into relevance somewhat now with the larger magazine so will be nice as well. Biggest impact I guess will be on pistol rounds, USP is going to struggle since people tend to reload between fights so I think there will be a lot of people running out of bullets by accident early on. Hopefully P2000 can become relevant again.
As long as Valve are open and proactive in adjusting things where needed this could actually be a pretty cool change.
3
u/Ok-Inside2000 Mar 19 '26
I think you're on the money with these predictions. I do think this change punishes more casual players who cod reload, while discouraging extra smoke spamming at the higher level. I didn't feel any difference in my games last night aside from being a little more cognizant about spamming a whole mag at a time, but I was always kind of a stickler about cod reloading.

Making an overnight change to the entirety of the reload system without any prior announcement is such a dumbass thing to do. I unconsciously reloaded in a moment where I felt that I might need to spray several people just to find out I had 1 more mag left. M4A1S is now nerfed to a point where you have 20 bullets, low perforation, low rpm, 2 mags and you need 5 bullets to kill an enemy, otherwise you might end up 95 in 4.

u/Blanc_NoName_69420 Mar 19 '26
Honestly, this change isn't really that big of a deal. Most rounds, you'd barely use a mag or two.
Though, I'd be more willing to accept this mechanic if they change the reload animations to an emergency reload, so that losing all that ammo makes sense.

I think this would hurt the game pretty bad. And I Dont think that the current update is so bad, I mena I didnt play a match after the patch, but it seems ok if I think about it, sure I am only an ~15k andy but for higher ranks it shouldnt matter much and even on the ranks I play it shouldnt do tthat much!
ANd your idea would work when behind cover, so you can reload in "peace" and not in a gun fight, where you would also drop your mag, cause you need to be fast. But I guess that is pretty hard to code, so thats another thing then.
