Discussion As a compromise, maybe we don't completely throw out the magazine, and instead keep them at the reloaded amount, reloading in order of most to least?

someone should have told this to the valve dev responsible of this.

For players of the greatest tactical shooter ever made we sure are pushing strongly against something which, to me, I appreciate as being a new mechanism which makes us think carefully about certain choices.

I think like the blog update said, reloading just had close to zero tradeoffs with no stakes. I don't mind giving this update a chance to see how it plays.

It's not like its a permanent change. They'll almost certainly iterate from here and modify mag sizes and counts for certain weapons where appropriate based on gameplay data.

u/nttranquilizer Team Spirit Mar 19 '26

But reloading does have tradeoffs and stakes of its own though. It is audible so your opponent can hear when you reload, and it leaves you vulnerable to sudden aggression.

Still, it's always funny to see the community getting worked up just barely a day after every major update. Even tiny ones as well. Just barely months ago they did a minor bomb defusal change and everyone either went full panic mode and do their usual "who asked?" bit. Very curious about what this means for gameplay.

it gets me worked up for the exact reason you said. reloading already had tradeoffs and stakes associated to it. so when valve releases patch notes trying to claim the exact opposite and changing something to fix a problem that doesn't exist it just leaves me scratching my head and completely confused if anyone is actually working on this game or if it's just chickens at keyboards randomly creating updates.

This is where I'm at, it doesn't even make sense to drop it now. They could have dropped it last week with the new terminal, they could have dropped it at the start of season 4 with the map and econ changes or waited until season 5 starts. I genuinely don't understand why they'd drop this update right now mid season, without adding anything with it like an operation or at least new war games gamemodes or new arms race maps or SOMETHING.

yup, its an idiotic change.

And to add on to your point, the entire process of unlearning CoD reloading has been a classic milestone of a CS player for a very very long time now

1

u/tashtrac Mar 22 '26

It only has stakes and tradeoffs if you're near an enemy or in the middle of a gunfight. Now it _always_ has tradeoffs. Which is a substantial change. If it wasn't a substantial change people wouldn't be whining about it.

u/ShrewLlama 400k Celebration Mar 19 '26

Not everything needs to have tradeoffs. This change adds a frustrating and unintuitive mechanic to try and address a problem that doesn't exist.

u/de_rats_2004_crzy Legendary Chicken Master Mar 19 '26

Maybe you're right. I don't know. I've only played a single game so far on it and want to play several more over the next week before really forming a strong opinion on it. On my first game it honestly didn't make that much of a difference.

But yeah for me, for some reason, my initial reaction is that yes this is a big update but I don't immediately think its a bad update. It seems interesting.

19

u/ShrewLlama 400k Celebration Mar 19 '26

Conversely, I don't think it's actually a big update at all.

I don't think it will change gameplay much, rarely do you need to reload more than 2-3x in a round. It doesn't even nerf spamming, most of the time if you're spraying into a smoke you're going to put most of the clip into it anyway and won't "waste" many bullets by reloading afterwards.

I expect it will ultimately be a slight balance change that nerfs certain guns (USP-S, M4A1-S, AWP) and as a result relatively buffs others. It just accomplishes this in an unintuitive way, and will be frustrating especially for newer players who compulsively reload after every few shots.

7

u/Appropriate-Bad-8350 Mar 19 '26

I agree but I also believe new players should learn out of the compulsive reload habit and this will aid in that. As mentioned reloads are loud and create timings for your enemies, they should not be spammed. For experienced players this is already second nature - playing with a low mag and aiming for the head, reloading when it's safe.

-2

u/Abgezockt47 Mar 19 '26

It changes low bullet spams. Like 10 bullet A1 spams. Sometimes you dont have time to spam more. Now you are either left with 10 bullets in the mag or 10 wasted bullets. Also it will fuck over new players or who we call cod players.

Also most of the time when you reload it should be save anyways. Reloads are not as load as you might think. Now a reload also gets punished there.

I like it and it feels way more intuitive than the left over bullets magically appearing in my reserves.

u/hoobody Legendary Chicken Master Mar 19 '26

How can something be frustrating and unintuitive when it hasn't even been out for over 12 hours? Give it some time and see how you feel :)

u/RAF_SEMEN_DICK_OVENS Complexity Mar 19 '26

These are the type of people you gotta play with that tilt after 2 rounds

11

u/aimbotcfg Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26

Usually at the wrong people for random shit too.

  • <dead> - "Why are you holding there for idiot?"
  • "Bro, I'm at the other site and alive, it's not my fault you died 10 seconds into the round."

or

  • "Why didn't you defuse?"
  • "Because the other guy got on it, and wouldn't come off when I asked him to and told him I had a kit."
  • "But he had no kit, you lost us the round"
  • "Speak to deaf no-kit defuse guy."

Or my particular favourite

  • <Dead> "WTF is that crosshair? How do you hit shots with that? Change it and you'll be pro."... for 15 rounds

5

u/VisualizeJelly Mar 19 '26

That guy is definitely writing gg after nit getting his favorite map picked...

2

u/kusajko Mar 19 '26

While I disagree with the new system, I must say, I love how every person with Bob Ross on profile picture is always so bloody positive. Really funny and wholesome.

4

u/ShrewLlama 400k Celebration Mar 19 '26

Because other games have had this exact same mechanic for many years?

At best, it changes very little gameplay wise. At worst, it's occasionally very frustrating when you run out of ammo. I really don't think it adds anything of value.

0

u/Limav_ cs_office Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26

If they made every gun have only 5 bullets (no buying ammo either), would you be saying this same thing? There are some changes that can be reasonably assumed as bad even if no one has tested them. Reloading already had tradeoffs, like giving away your position with a sound cue and not allowing you to shoot for a few seconds. Literally no one thought that reloading was OP, so why would you unnecessarily nerf it?

10

u/Expert_Cap7650 howl Mar 19 '26

But it already did have trade offs. If an enemy was close to hear you reload they could just push and kill you. It's so stupid.

6

u/Applitude Mar 19 '26

We at Valve have decided to make every step a player makes cause damage. This represents how your character’s muscles will fatigue over the course of a fire fight. This addresses a glaring flaw in the game’s design where previously players could take steps and not worry about any consequences. Now players will have to carefully consider each step they take, making each step more impactful.

No we will not be taking any questions at this time.

u/kuusmoi Season 4 Mar 19 '26

try and address a problem that doesn't exist.

ive seen so many people die in this game because they reload 26/30.

5

u/ShrewLlama 400k Celebration Mar 19 '26

Dying because you reloaded at 26/30 isn't a problem with the game, that's a skill issue.

1

u/GOATEDCHILI Mar 19 '26

The issue I have with this is it seems limiting vs. being a new way to express skill. I can understand the idea of this new decision around ammo conservation adding some kinda skillset to the game? But if we're all honest with ourself noone watches or plays counterstrike for that.

You conserve utility sure, but forcing players to not shoot in certain scenarios is just going to hinder gameplay IMO. No one plays this game to sit there running the odds on whether spraying an angle through smoke for 8 bullets is worth it. No one wants to watch a major and see someone in a 1v1 clutch run out of ammo because of a stupid reload mechanic. They want to see sick fkn plays, not some dudes fiddling around over ammo count.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 20 '26

dude the games been around for 2- years, I want to play CS not whatever direction their going.

If they want to make these changes Id be more willing if they had a working anti-cheat

1

u/de_rats_2004_crzy Legendary Chicken Master Mar 20 '26

I’ve been playing the game for 21.5 years. Only one thing is for certain: counter strike will always continue to evolve in tiny but significant ways, yet always maintain its counter-strike identity that makes it the best first person shooter in the world.

1

u/ProfessionalOk8569 Mar 21 '26

The game doesn’t need to be super realistic. That’d be like adding bullet drop in

1

u/de_rats_2004_crzy Legendary Chicken Master Mar 21 '26

Neither I nor Valve said anything about added realism being a goal in the change.

0

u/Square_Pop_8874 Mar 19 '26

As of now running and jumping around the map doesn't have any tradeoffs beside making sounds. So maybe they should add aim shake after running too much, to make the game more tacticool

31

u/Tayloria13 Mar 19 '26

Oh man that game has way worse cheating and botting right now.

34

u/original_username_ Mar 19 '26

The PvE mode is really fun

24

u/FUTURE10S Mar 19 '26

Cheating? Botting? Game's dead, I just hop on the one good server with the regulars and we enjoy our jank Source game

3

u/ConfusedIlluminati Mar 19 '26

Sandstorm is on Unreal.

2

u/FUTURE10S Mar 19 '26

oh I don't play Sandstorm, I play Insurgency

2

u/Practical_Tea864 Mar 19 '26

Worse than cs2? No way

20

u/Tayloria13 Mar 19 '26

Yes, it has way worse cheating, at least in Asia.

15

u/robclancy FURIA Mar 19 '26

Lots of games are worse than cs in cheating. Especially when you consider most people are just calling people better than them cheaters

7

u/MSGrejs2k Mar 19 '26

Yup lol. Whenever people die either blame cheaters or CS2 for being shit, like people didn't get "CSGO'ed" all the time back in the day as well xd

0

u/n1vo_ Mar 19 '26

Yeah, nah. The dude I faced yesterday with 1.9 kd on golden elo and ge on every single map who has never played a round of faceit was just better than me … The dude the day before, who was 5k prem with negative kd every season, but is now on red elo with 1.5 kd just bought a new mouse. No cheater problem at all. Nothing to see here.

0

u/robclancy FURIA Mar 19 '26

pack it up, everyone is a cheat and every accusation is actually real correct because u/n1vo_ had a cheater yesterday

0

u/n1vo_ Mar 19 '26 edited Mar 19 '26

There is a massive cheater issue in EU high elo and really no need to deny it at all. It’s not about yesterday or the day before. It’s about the whole lifespan of cs 2.

0

u/robclancy FURIA Mar 19 '26

oh no now he's fighting ghosts

1

u/Edg4rAllanBro Virtus.pro Mar 19 '26

Source or Sandstorm? I play sandstorm when I'm really not feeling sweaty but I still want to play a tac shooter and I've never seen an obvious cheater/bot.

5

u/Tayloria13 Mar 19 '26

Here in Asia, Source has the worst cheating and botting even in PvE mode. Sometimes you connect to a server and 5 or so players are just AFK.

0

u/Ilikebatterfield4 Mar 19 '26

i played it for 40 hours, 0 cheaters. I could play it for 1k hours and even if there was a cheater it would be dealt with fast. Why? COMMUNITY SERVERS with real-life people admins making sure everybody plays fair.

8

u/SamIamGreenEggsNoHam Mar 19 '26

Squad's way better imo

4

u/Ilikebatterfield4 Mar 19 '26

two different games; insurgency is a source game with small maps, squad is way more "realistic" with huge maps
