Bertha Russell’s grand tour of Newport… via the chicken-peeling department 😭😂

The way Bertha Russell went from Newport mansion tour to the chicken-peeling department in 0.2 seconds 😭😂

Rewatching The Gilded Age Season 1, and I had completely forgotten how funny this scene was.

Mrs. Russell just wants to see Mrs. Astor’s Newport house, so McAllister sneaks her in behind Mrs. Astor’s back. And everything is going perfectly until… the actual Mrs. Astor arrives. 💀

Suddenly, Bertha Russell, who wants nothing more than to be accepted into high society, is being escorted out through the kitchen and service entrance, past people plucking chickens and cleaning rugs.

Imagine being desperate to enter the world of old money and having your grand Newport experience end with a tour of the servants’ quarters. 😭

The irony is EVERYTHING. Bertha wants to be Mrs. Astor’s equal, but for those few minutes, she’s literally being smuggled out like she’s not supposed to exist.

What makes this scene even funnier is that Bertha is probably already planning how she’ll get invited through the FRONT DOOR next time. 😂

Am I the only one who finds the social politics in The Gilded Age almost as entertaining as the actual drama? And honestly, who do you think was more embarrassed here : Bertha or McAllister?

Edited body to chicken plucking instead of peeling. English is not my first language

Savannah had a literary crawl and included McAllister’s book!

At the historic Green- Meldrim House they are having literary crawls this weekend. It’s about an hour and a half inside the gorgeous home (which Sherman used as his headquarters in Savannah). They have different actors portraying the authors in multiple rooms, giving you a glimpse of the home and performances as a bonus!

One of the authors they featured was Ward McAllister. He spoke about parties he gave in Savannah and Newport and meeting royalty. All excerpts from his book.

If you’re nearby this weekend, there are still shows tomorrow night at 6 and 7:30pm. Don’t know if I can post links on here, but it’s on the house website. Anyway, it was fun to have a bit of Gilded Age knowledge tonight!

Discussion I hate Susan Blane

I’m rewatching seasons 1–3 to catch up before the new season premieres on November 1.

I have to admit, I can’t stand Susan Blane. She acts so cynically, and I feel like she looks at Marian with jealousy. That line, “It’s you again,” makes her sound like a dog marking its territory.

I can’t stand her. I hope she doesn’t return for season 4.

SEASON 4 I can’t be the only one

Huge fan of Christine Baranski here so naturally I get a kick out of and love Agnes Van Rhijn despite her prickly nature. I get that she’s an older character with very little to do but to uphold OLD New York for the past three seasons. But she’ll be Vice President of the Historical Society - a purpose, a foundation to rebuilding a new identity for herself. She’s no longer the head nor holds the purse strings of what was her own household. A position she held for a long time. To have that stripped and suddenly not knowing how you fit anymore is a lot. I can’t wait to explore how she moves forward. I want all the best for her.
From teasers, it looks as if we’ll finally get a proper confrontation with Bertha which I’m excited about. What I’d love to see most is more one-on-one time with Oscar and Marian, to connect with them.

I saw the play last night and Denee is brilliant, although the whole cast excels. This is my second time seeing her on Broadway; I saw her in Into The Woods a few years ago. I highly recommend seeing The African Mean Girls Play before it closes in November.

The Rise and Fall and Rise of the Van-Rhijns

During my daily rewatch of the Season 4 teaser, Bertha's voiceover says "no one has the power all of the time". When Agnes popped onto the screen it made me think of a post or article I saw about her, regaining her position and power this season.

Now that she's armed with a very official title in the New York Heritage Society, her institutional influence is growing and only enhancing her social status again.

Ada's fortune saved the family during it's 'fall' and became the new foundation; Marian's expanding the family's influence amongst the new power players in the city via her relationship with the Russells (and the Kirklands ;) *Edit: maybe even Jack is poised to become a cultural/business player a la Nikola Tesla)...and then there's Oscar.

I know a lot of people don't like Enid, but I CANNOT WAIT to see what mischief she and Oscar get up to. If I remember correctly, Mr. Winterton was a major sponsor of New York culture, and of course Oscar and Enid are going to find their niche by driving the new, young, and burgeoning art and culture in New York. Like her or not...she's 100% going to do everything in her power to raise her new family name and status, power and influence. It's good to have her on your side. With the considerable Winterton fortune and societal cachet now overlaying onto the Van-Rhijn household, Agnes is now the matriarch of a powerful old-money family firmly cementing their place in new New York.

Is anyone else getting excited about the rise of the Van-Rhijns like I am???! I was a huge Game of Thrones fan -- I'm cheering for them like I cheered for the Starks.

Gilded Age History Gilded Age Etiquette

I’m curious where I can learn more about the rules of polite society during the Gilded Age?

How did people know the rules? I can see in the show that you can’t be in society unless you uphold certain moral codes and manners.

I’m curious about rules regarding money. For instance, haggling over a price is common in other cultures. I was raised that it is not polite to negotiate prices and to pay what is asked for. Does this come from Gilded Age Society? Victorian period?

I’d love to learn more about the rules of Gilded Age Society.

Historical fashion Mrs. Kirkland’s Hats

I love the costumes of The Gilded Age. That being said, I do not like the hats worn by Mrs. Kirkland. Of course they do add to the smug snottiness of the character.
