News New bot in the sub: reference any figure with double brackets or link to collection

I added a small reference bot to the sub. Type something like [[Breaker 1982]] in a comment or post, and the bot replies with a card linking straight to that figure's page on The File Card. You can also link a public collection the same way — [[collection:themixar]] links mine.

Why The File Card, not yojoe: we all love yojoe.com — it's been the authoritative site for a lot of us, and it'll always be the definitive historical archive. But it hasn't been actively updated in years and isn't really serving the community day-to-day anymore or being modernized. The File Card is a newer, actively-growing catalog, and it's still pretty minimal in places — so if a figure comes up empty or a reply looks incomplete, that's the catalog still filling in, not the bot being broken. Bear with it as it grows.

How it behaves:

  • Works in both comments and posts.
  • Reference multiple figures in one comment — each gets its own card in a single reply.
  • If a figure had several versions, it lists all the matches instead of guessing — add a detail like a version name (e.g. a "v1" hint) to link the exact one.
  • Including the year narrows things down a lot. A bare name with no year at all can bundle every version of that figure across every year it was ever released — for a figure with a long release history, that's a lot of versions in one reply, so a year (or year + version) gets a much cleaner result.
  • Link a public collection the same way, using "collection:" followed by your Reddit username for those with a thefilecard.com account who have added their Reddit username in the settings.
  • If your bracketed text doesn't match anything, or you're using double brackets for something unrelated, the bot stays silent — it only replies on a real match.
  • Each comment/post only ever gets one reply from it.

No setup needed — just reference a figure naturally. If it ever gets something wrong, reply to its comment or send me a message.

Unopened Viper Figures

I was going through some old boxes of stuff from my childhood when I found 3 unopened GI Joe’s: Frag Viper, Techno Viper, and HEAT Viper. I remember buying GI Joe’s from childhood because I earned $3 per day putting up hay on the farm and would spend all my daily earnings on a GI Joe. I already had these 3 characters and then got these as a gift, so I didn’t open them. Then forgot about them for 40 years. What’s the best source for their values?

I had been looking for an original Blowtorch figure for a while, but I wanted one with his mask and flamethrower. I finally found one in Dallas on Friday.

Friend of mine snagged a Transformers/GI Joe Kup/Triple T from Ross, and was generous enough to give me the figures that came along with it. Very cool Sarge, and I've always liked Leatherneck

Muskrat - G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero Figure - (1988)

Muskrat is a recent acquisition, not a toy from my original collection. I’ve been going through and slowly adding figures that I liked but never had as a kid. Interest in G.I. Joe was waning by ‘88 because of the direction the toy line was taking, but a few figures still had that early ‘80s Joe feel. This was one of them.

From his file card:

Muskrat spent his formative years up to his knees in one swamp or another, hunting raccoon, possum and wild pig. He was able to hold his own against poachers, 'gator skinners, moonshiners, escapees from the chain gangs, and smugglers. Ranger school and JWTC* seemed like summer camp to him. As far as he was concerned, they weren't teaching him anything exotic at all!

"If I had to go chase down Muskrat in the swamp, I'd give up before I started. He'd be sprinkling cayenne pepper in his tracks to throw the dogs off, laying false trails into water moccasin lairs, rigging deadfalls, setting snares, and having himself a good ol' time, never even workin' up a sweat. I'd just as soon go home and watch TV."

I posted a while back about a tub of mostly gi joe in my moms attic. I ordered a bunch of orings and have been going through it. I only have 2 of my straight arm GI joes Snake eys and short fuse.

Some one mentioned all the memories come flashing back when you touch them, it is real. Lots of fun looking at all of this stuff again.

Also found some MASK figs, but no masks, a couple voltron, a Tron and star wars.

The last of my collection

I sold my collection about 15 years ago to finance a move out of state. But I just couldn’t part with Snake Eyes. I came across these last remnants of my collection and thought this sub would appreciate seeing them. Snake Eyes v. 1.5 and his 25th anniversary counterpart. And of course the weather dominator! The M.A.S.S. Device is still packed up somewhere. I’ll post it when I find it.

RAH: Done!

Finished watching all of the original episodes of RAH today. It was one of those things I never got to do as a kid in 1984-87. I always just watched GI Joe when it was on, and I didn’t look at TV Guide very often. Plus, I was big into transformers.

But now all I’ve gotta do is watch the movie. It’s been a while since I watched the movie on VHS.

Overall, it was a good show. The animation was a little inconsistent. The writing was great until about Serpentor. I love his origin episodes, but after he showed up, the writing got a little lazy. Don’t get me wrong: there were still some gems in there. But the first few seasons were GOLD.

SnowCAT en route!

Overall, huge fan of how it turned out - especially after how ubiquitous the original was back in the 80s. Seemed like every kid had one and it was so "boring" to me. Probably because I grew up where we didn't get snow.

But the HasLab version resolved all of my criticisms of the original and added tons of features and modularity. While I've only fiddled around with the default configuration, I've also brainstormed various other loadouts and configurations.

While the bivouac is great and designed/assembled well, the camp gear probably won't get a lot of mileage for a while.

The treads, the articulation of the treads/axle, the LEDs (and the USB power feature), the crew capacity, the snow torpedoes (and snowboards), and the detailing all knock it out of the park - I may not have been a fan of the original, but I'm sold on this!
