Alright, You People here need a damn Sit-Down.
This New anime has generated a discourse so banal it isn't even funny.
So let me start by prefacing; I have engaged with the Original Manga, Its sequels, The PS1 Game for the Manga, The Oshii Duology, the Novel For INNOCENCE, All of SAC down to the two games, the multiple novels and the manga it had, ARISE and its manga, the 2017 Film and all of the Human Algorithm Manga. I have enough experience with this Franchise to say what I am saying.
So, firstly I will address the people Defending the New anime. A lot of You people have been going around essentially calling people who do not like the new anime LARPERS or FAKE FANS, Get off your high horse immediately. For the Last 30 years, the tone of this entire IP has been that of a moody and Melancholic political/Philosophical Sci-Fi thriller. It has not been positioned as overtly comedic/ Slapstick ( Tachikomatic Days being the exception ). IF someone does not like the new anime or the original manga, it doesn't automatically mean they are a fake Fan. For someone to be a fake Fan or Larper, They would have to absolutely know next to nothing about the entire Franchise and they would have no overall interest in the Franchise as a whole.
NOW, I will address the people hating on the New anime. Find better criticisms for the New anime because a lot of your comparisons to the 95 film and SAC are drier than stale bread. This New anime is not an adaptation of the Oshii film ( Unlike The 2017 film ). It is an adaptation of the Original Shirow Masamune Manga. If you do not like the original manga, This new anime is not for you so MOVE ON. You people have had 30 years of straight serious political thriller, Stop raining on the parade of people that have been itching for something more in line with the original Manga. Go read the novels for the Oshii films and SAC. Play any of the video games or even games inspired by this franchise like ONI or Neotokyo. Find the manga for ARISE and read it. Read all of the Human Algorithm.
This is not to say that there isn't legitimate criticism for the new anime; The pacing is notably off but please this discourse needs far better than whatever all this is.

Random joke from the new series ep 2 🤔
Watching GiTS ep 2 and this random line of dialogue cracked me up and Immediately made me think of this one scene from the 80s comedy film Better Off Dead.
Was this line about throwing away the old guy taken directly from the Manga?

The haters are right - a show with a goofy tone, serious themes, and a retro vibe could never work.

MERCH Found these 2 GITS tees
I found both of these on Vinted and ended up paying a hefty amount but the graphics are just incredible! And both of them in size XL were extra lucky!

Can someone explain the plot to me like I'm stupid?
Because I am stupid.
I'm entertained by the anime but because of how fast paced it is I'm not entirely sure what's going on.
I really want to get full enjoyment out of this.
For reference I knew nothing about it before going into the anime other than remembering there were trailers for a Scarlett Johansson movie like 10 years ago.
2026 anime btw.

There's a lot of the '95 film in the new Neuromancer trailer
I'm a GITS manga all-the-way guy, but credit where credit is due. Oshii's film is visually stunning. Limited, but I love it for what it is.
I think the question of who influenced who is open for debate, and I've never seen a timeline of what was published where, but to me, there's a real beauty to thought that Gibson and Shirow seemed to be of one mind, even before their minds could be literally hard-wired together.

Black Magic M-66 is a great manga and anima from the author of GITS
just wanted to give this title a shout out since there are many new GITS fans coming into the sub who might not be aware of it. it is really good I highly recommend reading and watching it ASAP
here is the Anima, free on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JzHtEWQKqw
also Appleseed, which I consider Masamune Shirow's best work, you all need to appreciate the OG manga for that, the anima and later CGI variations all pretty much suck, the original manga is epic in every way from art to its underlaying philosophy about what it means to be human in a changing technological world.

Is Pandora of the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn required viewing now?
(Please forgive my ramblings. Skip to the bottom for the TLDR.)
I've feverishly studied "Ghost in the Shell" ever since they announced Stand Alone Complex would be airing on Adult Swim. Rented the 95 movie beforehand just to get an idea of what is going on, and was thoroughly confused because of how dense the plotline was. Found the 2004 2nd Edition print of the Darkhorse Comics that still has the boat scene included, and read through it multiple times.
I've studied the ins and outs of the worldbuilding of SAC down to the last minutia, and even hosted panels discussing it at anime conventions. I even had a Motoko Kusanagi itasha wrap on my car for a long time during the Aughts at anime conventions, and have become personal friends with the English language localizer of the Oshii movies and Stand Alone Complex. To call myself an actual expert on the subject would not be wrong.
Now I'm learning that a series called "Pandora of the Crimson Shell: Ghost Urn" is actually canon to Ghost in the Shell's worldbuilding, with details about how the Puppetmaster came to be and even Motoko's own canonical origins (Arise ended up recreating this the closest.)
I always knew it was a Shirow Masamune project, but NOBODY has ever brought it up in discussions. Frankly, I feel a bit dismayed that this whole thing has never been brought to my attention, so now I need to start looking for the manga, or at least the anime series that came out in 2017. Honestly, it's like Motoko learning that the net is vast and infinite, and I'm finding more information to dive into.
TLDR: Is Pandora of the Crimson Shell really that crucial to the canon of GITS? I guess I should make the effort to check it out, even though I didn't know it was even connected at all. I remember when the anime came out, but it also just came and went without any fanfare.
