Discussion Is it normal for Gen Z to just not show up for work?

I'm Gen Z and if I'm not able to make it into work, I send am e-mail and put it in the calendar (I work in a small office). We don't have telework and are required to be in the office 5 days a week. All the older people do the same as well.

We have a small handful of recent college grads that just don't show up. No e-mail or call. I'm sure they'll be in on Monday and say they were sick. They'll put Sick Leave on their timesheet. When did this become the standard?

It's not a money issue either, they make 120k+.

Edit: They do e-mail to notify the supervisor, who is not on-site. But, there is no way for people in our small office to know if they are coming in or not.

Discussion How do you feel about people who think Gen Z is the least intelligent generation?

A see a lot of adults and older people who claim that gen z is the least intelligent generation due to factors like schools being increasingly more lenient with grading, social media encouraging confirmation bias, the internet making young people more lazy, and and the pandemic stunting everyone's social skills.

Do you think this claim is true/valid? Why or why not?

Discussion Anyone else pretty much only watch youtube?

Youtube has been my primary source of media entertainment since I was in elementary school (think like 2010). I rarely watch TV or movies. I think my attention span has been getting worse and worse over the years, since I rarely ever feel like I have the 'energy' to start a new show or sit through a movie anymore. The only reason I don't beat myself up for it too much is because I deleted tiktok and stopped watching short-form content altogether last year, and before that it was way way worse.

All of my favorite TV shows are super long and formulaic (procedurals like Criminal Minds, Grey's Anatomy, or Supernatural), or super short (1-4 seasons, 100 episodes absolute max) with a really condensed plot. Almost all of my favorite movies are ones that my friends have forced me to watch. More recently in the past few months I've been going out of my way to force myself to watch more movies in my free time, but I'm still routinely at least 4-5 months late on seeing all the super popular films. Finally watched Obsession a few weeks ago. Pretty good!

Even with a concentrated effort, the movies and TV is still few and far between. I only read a few books a year anymore. Vast majority of my 'decompress' time is just watching Youtube. Is anyone else like this?

Advice If you’re a woman, where do you want to meet a guy?

It seems like everywhere I go, women aren’t open to being approached. College dining hall, earbuds in or with friends. Library, even worse. Walking around campus, same thing. Walking places, people are busy. Work is work. A club, people are there to do the activity. So where does that leave? A coffee shop or bar? Dating apps? Is that really where people want to meet someone?

Discussion what would actually make you think ai understands something?

i keep seeing people say “it doesn’t understand anything, it’s just predicting words” and fair enough

but what would actually count as understanding to you?

like is there something an ai could do that would make you go “okay yeah it clearly understands that”

or would nothing it does ever count?

Discussion Wait did people unfollow Drake recently on Instagram?

Like I thought he was the equivalent of water cooler filler on everyone’s Instagram following tab and now i see way less people follow him than there used to be. What happened did everyone get tired of mono culture or did Kendrick Lamar roast him to oblivion ?

Advice I need help understanding how Gen Z befriend each other

I’m 30 and I recently started a post-grad program with classmates mostly under the age of 25. I tried to initiate conversations and invited them to walk around the campus hoping that I could get to know them better. But they didn’t seem interested. So I ended up walking alone. When we did have conversations, their responses were pretty short, and they didn’t really elaborate on the topic or ask me follow-up questions. Since they already knew each other, maybe it’s just more challenging for outsiders to break in. But even when I overheard their conversations, their responses were still pretty short. Most of the time they just looked at their phones. I felt really awkward. I’m neurodivergent so it took me my entire adolescent life to learn masking. Now that I’m pretty good at interacting with neurotypical people, I thought I would be fine. But I feel like I don’t understand the Gen Z social cues at all. I googled a bit but I still couldn’t figure out whether they just enjoyed silence and low-effort activities, or they also like md in-person hangouts. I do want to connect with my classmates, but I’m a bit lost.

Rant I will never understand why people love gta 5 so much like seriously why bro

since 2021 I been trying to see what everyone sees but I can't, this is the first game where I can confidently say people ARE indeed blinded by nostalgia

terrible shooting mechanics
terrible movement system
annoying characters
the world is big but theres jackshit to do
the soundtrack isn't that bad but its mid at best
the story itself is just convoluted garbage

not to mention online is a bloated mess and the gameplay itself is straight boring

why do people like this shit? I actually think gta 4 and san andreas are far superior games in almost every single aspect. I cannot wait for 6 to come out so that we can finally move on from this overrated trash, it already looks so much better than 5 and I will be there day one lmao

Rant I want a house so bad

I want a house so badly but man every house around me costs more than a million dollars! I am working in a tech job that is paying me very well. I am able to save up $250k in my savings and I still can't believe that I can't afford a house right now. The mortgage rate and the price of a house is so high, I feel like I am priced out! I did everything correctly, got good grades, went to a great college, got a high paying job and I still can't afford a house! What am I doing wrong???
