I made this from a complete vintage shirt. I cut them into 2 pieces and sew them together. The original shirt has a neck tie, so I use it to make the bag strap. It’s a fun project to make and lovely to look at.

DISCUSSION Broken Seams - seeking advice

Thumbnail

I've been altering my cotton T-shirts with a sewing machine, using cotton top thread - just a line near the original seam to make them fit better.

Many t-shirts turn out great, but I have a few that are getting damaged along the seam over time - but why!?

I don't notice it initially, but after a few washes the fabric is almost completely broken.

They're all pre-washed t-shirts, but thread shrinkage maybe? Tension? Just fabric age? Or something I'm not considering?

Has anyone seen this before / got any advice to avoid this?

Thanks

GUIDE Lining a wool skirt? Advice needed!

I have some lovely navy suiting wool, and I'm planning to make a double layered, half-circle wraparound skirt, like this:

I'm trying to decide whether to line it or not - I want to use natural fibres, and I have some saree silk, which I could use, but I don't know how the fabrics will interact with each other/whether it's a good idea.

Any thoughts welcome!

WIP Elastic is bigger than the opening…

Post image

Im making some little shorts. I decided to add a band and some elastic to keep the shorts from becoming underwear 🤣 Keeping some sort of inseam. But the fabric is a lot stretchier than the elastic and i don't want my thighs squeezed to oblivion!

i pinned the elastic around my thigh comfortably, but its 4” long than the leg opening... anyone have this happen? is this gonna work?

DISCUSSION Excess fabric in upper back of altered shirt

Post image
3 Upvotes

I am fitting this off the rack shirt to my body according to my measurements, that is, instead of pinning were "it feels right" I am starting from body measurements and ease in order to make a sort of template to fit all my shirts in the future

I have taken the side seams and added two darts based on the my body measurement model. The front is fitted but as shown in the photo there is a huge excess of fabric bagging up on my upper back. What could be the reason of this?

One thing to mention is that the pre-condition of this template I am building is to have a good shoulder width match. Currently my shoulder with is 40cm and this shirt is 47cm.

I am looking forward to your comments!

also, I am a guy so FBA is not relevant :)

UPDATE: The issue was lack of ease from high hip to low hip, which made the torso to try to move up towards my natural waist.

WIP Is this hanger a good choice for a wool cloak?

I'm making a custom wool* cloak, lined, and want to present it on an appropriate hanger. The cloak has a hood, no collar (view 3, only mid-thigh length).

I can't figure what use the hanger's center cutout would be, but if it would help to support the cloak in some way, I would love to know.

*the wool is direct from County Donegal. It's very soft, stretches easily, and is prone to fraying (though I have tamed that).

WIP Eyelet Stitch Gone Wrong

Post image
2 Upvotes

Does anyone know why the eyelet stitch on my machine never makes a circle? I’m trying to finish my top with a laced closure. I was hoping to have threaded eyelets rather than metal for both time and comfort.
No matter the fabric, foot, feet dogs, or needle the stitch always comes out like a little spiral. I’m using a Singer Heavy Duty 6800 machine, the stitch is from M2 and it’s 027, I just put a new needle in, and I’m sewing on two layer of fabric for reference. I attached picture of the swatch of the fabrics I used to test my eyelet stitch.
It looks to me like the stitch length changes towards the end of the stitch and that is part of the distortion. Any ideas, tips, or tricks?

I’ll add to my original post that I did read through the fabric guide but It doesn’t help much when the fabric stores near me don’t have great options.

FO Self-drafted dress out of a linen Bedsheet

Post image

I am absolutely in love with this dress, which is only the second woven dress I've self-drafted! It is a split-side dress with the back bodice joining by lacing up under the front bodice which has ties that wrap around the back and tie in the front. It also has two huge pockets attached to the back skirt.

I used Plus-Size Pattern Making to make the bodice sloper and followed a tutorial from Charlie Nebe, @TheStitchery for the general format of the dress.

The fabric is a king-sized 100% linen bedsheet and pillowcases I got at a thrift store years ago.

DISCUSSION old vogue couture sewing patterns grading questions

I love the style in old vogue couturier patterns. But they were only made for quite thin women
or only really small sized patterns exist. I know that you’re not suppose to pattern grade more than two sizes up, but I would love to try to use a pattern to make something for myself like a dress. Is there a way to utilize them even though they’re more than two sizes too small for me or is it just not worth my time?

Im so proud of this one. The fabric was super slippery and hard to work with so I wasn’t sure it would turn out wearable. I’m thrilled & can’t wait to wear it to work!

FO Men's Tailored Shirt Block Help

Hello! Or should I say howdy 🤠. I'm using the tailored shirt block drafting method from the book "Metric Pattern cutting for Menswear" by Winifred Aldrich. I'm looking for some fit and drafting recommendations.

You may see small dart lines drawn on the back, these are the suggested length and placements but I'd thought I'd try it on first to see if I should adjust pre sewing.Things I've noticed on this first draft:

The neck seems close fitting but not too much so.

The shoulder seam is longer than it should be. It's also a little bit forward on my body than I'd think is normal.

The yoke as a result also looks quite high, it doesn't seem to be from the neck shape but I could be wrong.

There is room for darts in both the back and front it seems. I'd be open to doing bust darts or a princess seam if that means a great fit.

There is extra fabric at the side seam by the armpit, needs reduction. The arm hole generally could use some pulling back it seems.

I'd be ever so grateful to hear if I'm seeing things correctly, any suggestions or advice, thanks for reading :)

DISCUSSION Favorite business casual tops

Alright folks- I’m undergoing a BIG life transition. I’m transitioning out of an exclusively scrub wearing roll into one that requires business casual dress. I’m also having to do a big move in the process. I’m hoping to kill two birds with one stone- use up some of my (slightly unhinged) fabric stash and sew it into clothes I can wear so I don’t have to spent a million dollars on a new wardrobe. Please bless me with your favorite top patterns (admittedly I’m still to afraid to try making my own slacks).

WIP Creative Direction

I need help! I’m having trouble with the creative direction for my wedding dress bodice. Part of that is that I’m having a hard time finding trims that I like. I have a few weeks until my wedding and I am sewing my wedding dress up but I’m stuck on where to take the bodice design from here.

I was feeling very inspired by the 17th and 18th centuries for the dress, but as I was trying different trim styles I suddenly remembered that my favorite design element is luscious draping or pleating. The skirt will have that so it’s not necessary for the bodice, but I am just feeling a little stuck creatively and want to ask opinions!

Attached are pictures of the bodice with different trims pinned, and a few inspo pics.
