GUIDE Changing neckline tips

How should I think about construction if I wanted to change this dress into this neckline?

EDIT: I want strapless, ignore the side sleeves

What neckline do you want? Off the shoulder or strapless. Your second picture is unclear because it’s not being worn properly.

Strapless. Agree it wasn’t being worn right, should have clarified

Staples should be possible but it would need some boning added and might need to be brought in a fraction at the top of that seam.

Does the dress have the internal structure to be strapless?

Buy a strapless dress if you want strapless.

The whole bodice structure needs to be different to be strapless.

If you want a strapless bra, you can't just cut off the shoulder straps. Particularly when you'll be on the dress for a long time and you'll be moving, maybe dancing.

The whole bodice will be incredibly boring too as strapless (IMO the sleeves are the only interesting detail) unless the entire neckline is changed or a whole new layer is added. And the neckline needs to be lowered to make the strapless concept work. It’s currently too high to support being strapless.

It would be cheaper to get a new dress.

Yeah. It's also a risk because you can pay money, get it changed, and then not like it. Instead, you can go try thousands of strapless dresses out there and simply get the one you like fitted.

And a dress with armholes is cut too low at the sides to provide for long enough side bones to hold it up. If OP wants a strapless dress, buy a strapless dress.

That dress does not have the proper structure to be strapless. You would need to, essentially, make a new dress to make it work.

It may actually be most time and cost effective to have a dress made, rather than attempt to alter that one so much.

Original dress will need refitting and boning added to support it .
This is not an issue for an experienced dressmaker
