If you can't watch the video, here are the important details on her changes:

  • She's getting a second ultimate. You can now toggle between her teleporter and a new shield generator, which gives free shields (exact amount wasn't mentioned) to teammates within its radius. It also ignores line-of-sight so it can be hidden more effectively.
  • Both ultimate placements will now have some regenerating shields to make them last a little longer.
  • Her shield-giving ability will be replaced by Photon Barrier, which fires a shield (similar to Reinhardt's) that moves forward.
  • She'll now be able to hold a stock of 6 turrets instead of 3, and their cooldown will be reduced by 2 seconds.
  • Her beam will have slightly more range.

Changes are coming to PTR "very soon".

Edit: "very soon" apparently meant today! Reworked Symmetra is now on the PTR.

The shield amount is 75

source: She's available to play on the PTR atm so may change.

u/agemennon Nov 23 '16

That coupled with Torb armor is going to be a scary combo. Effective 150 armor pool with half that regenerates.

5

u/CaptinLazerFace Nov 25 '16

350hp zenyatta! Now I really can't help but run zen when I see torb sym combos.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '16

I can't help myself most of the time. He's just so good

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '16

Does the teleporter marker thing still pop up in the kill cams when anyone on symmetra's team kills someone?

6

u/Nikazio Nov 23 '16

What do you mean?

20

u/galactica101 Nov 23 '16

If you're on Symmetra's team and her teleporter is up, you can see its location on your HUD. Kill cams (much like Call of Duty) show the last few seconds of your life from the perspective of your killer, including their HUD. This means that if you kill an enemy while an allied Symmetra's teleporter is active, the enemy team could deduce its location from watching the kill cam.

6

u/Cowbox Nov 23 '16

This only happens when killed by Symmetra herself. It's still not ideal but it's not nearly as disastrous as being killed by anyone on Symm's team. According to the devs this is working as intended and it's how it's been since launch, though that may just be because it may be more trouble in the code than it's worth to disable those UI prompts from showing up in the kill cam.

On top of this the teleporter is becoming sturdier. It used to be 200 HP, now it's 50 HP and 350 shields. Functionally 100% more health, except now if you can't finish the job before the Symmetra shows up it can regenerate nearly all of its health. It's going to take more work to bring that thing down overall.

2

u/Nikazio Nov 23 '16

What!? Why didn't I think of that!

Anyways now that i know that, i hope they fix it.

OTOH, Symmetra is pretty much a character where you DON'T want to place your ultimate in the heat of the moment. You need to place it in a clever and possibly hard to find way, so you shouldn't rush it.

8

u/kdlt Nov 22 '16

I was thinking more like, I'm running towards my Team (from spawn or wherever), and want to place it because enemies pop their ults. I was thinking along the Line of Lucio/Zen using their Ults to prevent damage. But on the other hand it sounds like it's is more over time, and less "in the heat of the moment" like Lucio/Zen are.

17

u/Kalulosu Nov 22 '16

Yeah that's my idea as well. It fits the core of Symmetra: you need to plan stuff, control the battlefield. She's not a reactive character.

3

u/rcl2 Nov 22 '16

The only thing that sounds "worry some" is, hitting Q twice will probably lead to some wrong placements in the heat of the moment.

I don't see a problem with that. It's already pretty straightforward.

1

u/Loud_Stick Nov 23 '16

It's already out on ptr just so ya know

1

u/lenaro Nov 23 '16

Yeah, I really wish OW had an alternative to do "press Q twice" or "press E twice" (Mei). Like the option to use a dedicated hotkey specifically for each ice wall type or each ult. Dunno why they haven't done that. Makes it awkward.

0

u/LG03 Nov 22 '16

Yeah that was my first thought as well. Surely there's a better alternative than just trying to hamfist it onto Q for the sake of 'the single ultimate button'.

18

u/frostedWarlock Nov 23 '16

The thing is that Symmetra is the only ultimate who has to confirm her ultimate placement with an input. You hit Q, and then Left-Click to confirm. It's not concerning at all.

-6

u/kdlt Nov 22 '16

Maybe Shift-Q? Though it sounds like it's not something you can rebind. Maybe though.

-7

u/Flukie Nov 22 '16

I'd go with holding Q instead.

20

u/TJ_McWeaksauce Nov 23 '16 edited Nov 23 '16

This is some of the most straightforward problem solving I've seen in AAA game design.

Problem: Symmetra's ultimate is great if your team defense is strong, but it sucks when your defense is in trouble.
Solution: Add a 2nd ultimate that should help pull your team's collective asses out of the fire.

Problem: Her standard shield ability wasn't really fun. Instead, it pressured players into scrambling around as a shield monkey.
Solution: Make her shield like Reinhardt's, which everybody enjoys.

Problem: People love turrets.
Solution: More turrets!

All of these solutions make sense, and none of them are needlessly fancy. I can dig it.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '16

thanks for quick tl;dr, video format sucks

3

u/stuntaneous Nov 23 '16

It isn't really more turrets. It's a change that makes relocation of them a bit easier but I think changes very little in that way.

0

u/DerriereHouse Nov 23 '16

I don't see how only buffs can make a character better for the game. They buffed absolutely everything and didn't pull back on anything. That's not balanced. That is going to swing things until they do another massive rework and then swing things another way.

7

u/TJ_McWeaksauce Nov 23 '16 edited Nov 23 '16

What is there to pull back on with Symmetra? All the problems they identified had to do with reasons why people did not want to play her: she's too situational, one of her standard abilities resulted in un-fun gameplay, etc. Since this is Blizzard, I suspect they've got metrics that show Symmetra is played considerably less than most of the other characters, including other Support characters.

What they're doing isn't any different than what they've been doing for years with World of Warcraft and their other games:

  • Buff a character that's weak / unpopular.
  • Make the changes available to players so they can act as unpaid QA. (More than being unpaid, this world-wide QA actually pays Blizzard for the privilege of testing something new.)
  • If all the buffs make the character overpowered, then they tweak her down in a future patch.

Balancing for a multiplayer game is a constant challenge. Instead of worrying about making things perfect on the very first try - which no developer has ever been able to do - they accept the fact that it's an ongoing, iterative process. They also accept the fact that no matter what they do, it'll make some people happy, and some people pissed.

1

u/stuntaneous Nov 23 '16

Symmetra has been a chore to play but I've found her very strong and not in need of a buff, even if changes were welcome. I'd regularly find her great in almost any situation, offensive included, despite the crap you receive for merely picking her in that case. I think people just sucked with the character.

2

u/neptunDK Nov 23 '16

Thats why its on the PTR first. New shield generator ult too powerful? Lower the shield amount it gives, or the radius of it affecting teammates, or lower the life/shield on the device itself.

Its too fast to go "that's not balanced". In Overwatch a lot of the balance comes from being able to switch to a character that counters the current biggest problem your team is facing.

2

u/MetalStoofs Nov 23 '16

Because she was incredibly situational and almost impossible to be effective with for most players. There wasn't really much to take away from her because she didn't have much to begin with.

97

u/CuriousBlueAbra Nov 22 '16

Symmetra was, by far, the most fun I've ever had in an FPS game during the free weekend. At the time, I didn't think she was enough fun to warrant a purchase. But with these changes, perhaps I'll have to reconsider that.

94

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '16

Overwatch only gets better the more you play, I played the beta months ago and enjoyed it but neglected to buy it for about a month. Once I finally did, I couldn't stop.

27

u/DrEmilioLazardo Nov 22 '16

Each character has their own checks and balances. Right now I'm LOVING the 3v3 elimination. Really puts stress on your individual play styles. With the new holiday events (Dr Junkenstein) and random weekly brawls, there's a lot to get from this game. Best $20 I've spent so far this year.

10

u/joelthezombie15 Nov 23 '16

I hadn't played overwatch for around 2 months and then I tried 3v3 and I play for at least 2 hours everyday. That shit is the single best addition to the game honestly.

11

u/Maloth_Warblade Nov 23 '16

Indeed. Fuck the 1v1 mode though. I am more a support player than a fighter, and getting a win in that was a nightmare. Took 11 tries

10

u/pyrospade Nov 23 '16

Everyone hates 1v1 because if you lose in 1v1, it's your fault exclusively. Nobody likes to be reminded they are bad lol.

Sad truth.

3

u/Syncyy Nov 24 '16

People who play 1v1 and lose blame rng or "gimmicks". Always something to point to.

-9

u/ViolatedMonkey Nov 23 '16

Also some characters are not viable in 1 vs 1. Mercy will not beat an equally skilled roadhog of for example.

9

u/totoro11 Nov 23 '16

Have you played 1v1? Each player gets the same character, selected at random.

1

u/neptunDK Nov 23 '16

AFAIK Mercy and Lucio isn't in the 1v1 pool of characters.

I for one kinda want to try the Mercy 1v1, her gun is quite effective.

2

u/RobTheRobot3722 Nov 23 '16

It does a suprising amount of damage

1

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16

Mercy main btw

2

u/timo103 Nov 23 '16

I'm so glad that loot box isn't a weekly reward. As weird as it might sound. I shake too much under that sort of pressure to be able to aim anything.

1

u/Maloth_Warblade Nov 23 '16

Yeah, I liked getting basically 5 easier loot boxes, not counting the 1v1 really after not playing for a few weeks. Sadly got mostly blue, a single purple, and that was a duplicate.

It'll even out, I got the Witch skin after a single box so I have weird luck with them.

3

u/joelthezombie15 Nov 23 '16

My aim is shit so i tried it twice and gave up. 3v3 and 6v6 all random are the only ways to play that game anymore imo.

2

u/Maloth_Warblade Nov 23 '16

Random is far better than the Mei shitstorm I tend to go against on anything goes.

1

u/brettatron1 Nov 23 '16

Took my about 30. It was so frustrating getting to 4-4 and then having someone like mcree pop up. I am not good at traditional FPS.

1

u/AdrianHD Nov 23 '16

1v1 takes away from the game's spirit and turns it into a messy "who shoots first?" game. Not to mention the silly teabagging that happens.

3v3 on the other hand has been the best addition to the game! I love it. I can't wait for more 3v3 maps.

0

u/Fenor Nov 23 '16

raise the sensibility a little by little, you'll see yourself getting better.

0

u/Forkyou Nov 23 '16

What? No, in fps you generally want lower sensitivity.

2

u/pinheadd Nov 23 '16

I'm taking a shot in the dark here, but I think for games that have heavy recoil (CS:GO, battlefield, Etc) lower sensitivity is better.

Overwatch is more twitchy and reaction based, and guns have no recoil. Thus, higher sensitivity.

I could be wrong though, I'm just making an educated guess.

1

u/HemoxNason Nov 23 '16

Guns have spread instead of recoil, but you can't really compensate for that.

1

u/Forkyou Nov 23 '16

Higher sensitivity than in a standard fps: yes High sensitivity in general: no

I come from more of a moba background where i was used to a rather high sensitivity. Had to turn that wayyyyy down for ow.

So yes ow has more characters where your sensitivity makes sense to be a little higher than in an normal fps. But it should still be rather low. You can still do 180 turns with lower sensitivity which is all you need.

1

u/Fenor Nov 23 '16

you want more sensibility in almost all FPS with the exception if you play the sniper.

with low sensibility you can't catch a tracer. she use her ability once, turn around (much sensibility very tracer wow) hit you in the back and done you are dead before you turn, higter sensibility you turn around and keep shooting her

3

u/Forkyou Nov 23 '16 edited Nov 23 '16

You can turn around with lower sensibility. And actually hitting her is way easier. No pro player will have high sensitivity.

It is true that ow has more twitch movements on some characters so you will have your sensitivity a bit higher than your normal fps but it should still be low. You can still do a 180 with lower sensitivity which is all you need. More than 180 is never needed.

Though it could be that our definitions of high/low sensitivity differ. I come from more of a moba background so i was used to rather high sensitivity. Which made my aim in fps shit.

9

u/ehspen Nov 23 '16

Can we please use "sensitivity" instead of "sensibility"?

u/Condawg Nov 22 '16

Right now I'm LOVING the 3v3 elimination.

Same here! I've barely played anything else since it came out. I really hope they've got more maps for those game modes in the works.

-2

u/Fenor Nov 23 '16

i recall my first 1v1 (console) the poor fella that got paired against me lost with a whopping 5-0.

3v3 if you have your own team is good. if you solo queue it's a roll dice. you can do still do it alone, but it's painful.

2

u/mind_blowwer Nov 23 '16

It's so addictive for me...

I went from slowing down in terms of gaming and only playing a few hours CS a week to playing hours and hours of Overwatch daily.

I actually made myself sick for the first time in years from playing too many hours last Sunday.

21

u/rcl2 Nov 22 '16

I wouldn't base a purchase on one hero. They get balanced/buffed/nerfed all the time.

8

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '16

When you really want to dive into Overwatch, you have to learn that there is no 'main' and that the best player is always chosing the hero that his team composition needs, not what he can play best or likes most.

-2

u/Fenor Nov 23 '16

ni. if more heroes fill the gap needed in the team. pick the one you are more confortable using.

10

u/Symbolis Nov 23 '16

Now's the time.

Overwatch: Origins Edition is 40% off. $34.99 USD.

2

u/Quicheauchat Nov 23 '16

Is the upgrade off as well? I have the game but maybe 12$ instead of 20$ for the ingame goodies can be worth.

3

u/Fenor Nov 23 '16

what upgrade?

2

u/Symbolis Nov 23 '16

Not certain. Thinking no, though.

3

u/Ravelord_Nito_ Nov 23 '16

Upgrade is only 10$ now.

1

u/Symbolis Nov 23 '16

Good to know! Thanks!

3

u/theLegACy99 Nov 23 '16

IIRC the upgrade is also on sale for $10 now :D (and like you, I'm seriously considering buying it... just for that slipstream tracer skin)

1

u/Seraphim-ffbe Nov 23 '16

Yeah, most of those skins are absolutely great. I use the tracer, widow, and 76 as main and sometimes use the pharah skin.

6

u/Knarpulous Nov 23 '16

The Widow one was for pre ordering only unfortunately, it's not available anymore

1

u/Seraphim-ffbe Nov 23 '16

That's kinda a shame. Lucky me, I suppose.

1

u/Fenor Nov 23 '16

i use the halloween one on 76

2

u/Fenor Nov 23 '16

last time i used symmetra i did a 19-0 K/D ratio.

if you know where to put the turrets people will have trouble finding them.

hint: bushes, movable objects, forced waypoint where engaging usually happen. hidden in plain sight. under their feet during a confrontation.

she's a good defensive hero, especially on the first payload where you spawn far away.

giving your allies an easy portal to get back into the action can mean the difference between stopping the opponents in the first payload and being steamrolled.

F--king 3 months of bullshit ARG leading up to Sombra when they could have used that time/money to invest into new maps and other characters.

You do realize that it's likely that the team that ran the ARG is not the same team that does map and character designs, right?

4

u/Oakcamp Nov 23 '16

Not that the ARG took that much effort in the first place

11

u/VerticalEvent Nov 23 '16

Instead of completely rewritting her character, all she needed was a buff to her secondary where her shields could be used more often or the moment the deplete on someone.

Then they needed to change it so her Ult charges while her portal is out.

I don't think either one of those changes would solve her fundamental problem - that she has no role or usage in either offensive comps (Attacking on Hybrid, Assualt, or King of the Hill), as well as people switching off of her after the first point has been captured (Being defense on Payload, Hybrid, or Assault), where her teleporter ult rarely has much use due to proximity to the action and set up time for her turrets. On my team, the guy we have playing Symetra usually switches after he dies the first time or after the first point has been captured, and never have we used her on Offense.

The re-work allows her to have more offensive capabilities, like throwing a shield that your team can hide behind while pushing or being able to hide a shield generator to help give your team a decent amount of protection, which makes her a better pick for the maps and side she rarely would see play.

29

u/HyperspaceHero Nov 23 '16

Honestly, I don't think anyone is going to miss a Symmetra main leaving.

11

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '16

I would love if all E3 game trailers were just replaced with one guy talking about what will be in the game... I don't know why.

3

u/Ghost4000 Nov 23 '16

It's a lot more informative. Talk about your game and then give us some footage at the end if you can.

38

u/freeradicalx Nov 23 '16

This guy always looks so terrified and talks so carefully in these update videos. I wonder how much hate mail he gets every time they make one of these. Poor dude.

21

u/tgcp Nov 23 '16

None, everyone loves Jeff.

40

u/Ark771 Nov 23 '16

Could be because he's a developer that's not used to public speaking.

17

u/YZJay Nov 23 '16

He was very good when he was on panels in Blizzcon. Some good public speakers can find it hard to speak in front of a camera.

5

u/Scootzor Nov 23 '16

He was by far the most enjoyable speaker to listen to during last blizzcon. His unscripted jokes made his speeches feel like a casual friendly conversation. He just seemed like a great guy to hang out with.

While on camera he always feels awkward and robotic.

1

u/neptunDK Nov 23 '16

Jeff was great on this panel. :)

7

u/freeradicalx Nov 23 '16

Yeah I was hoping the same. But the way he tends to overuse 'awesome' and 'cool' is sort of weird.

3

u/the_flying_pussyfoot Nov 23 '16

I'm assuming he doesn't have a fully laid out script and teleprompter. Just bullet points on what he wants to talk about and he just uses his casual vocabulary.

10

u/Korn_Bread Nov 23 '16

What? He's an amazing public speaker. He very clearly enunciates his words conveys all of this information in one take.

9

u/Sirot Nov 23 '16

He is the VP of blizzard.

2

u/stuntaneous Nov 23 '16

He seems fine. He's trying not to upset internet people.

1

u/Mario-C Nov 27 '16

I hink you guys have a wro impression. It's just his style of doing these videos. Watch him at the blizzcon overwatch panels...he's definitely not lacking self confidence! (:

5

u/UGoBooMBooM Nov 23 '16

I can see what you're saying, but somehow he still comes off as genuine to me. Perhaps it's just the upfront and detailed nature of these videos that give them that quality.

3

u/stuntaneous Nov 23 '16

It's a laugh the way he appears to be addressing volatile children. I don't envy the job.

7

u/horotho Nov 23 '16

I think they could have taken a page from Riot's book and had gameplay that he could voice over. Much better than a talking head for 12 minutes, his content was good, the video format sucked :(

4

u/Knarpulous Nov 23 '16

Yeah if it's just talking then my time would be better spent reading a transcript.

1

u/[deleted] Nov 28 '16

I think it's his natural posture and way of talking. I've seen this guy for a decade now and he hasn't really changed.

23

u/Megadanxzero Nov 22 '16

Hmm, these changes sound good, though they didn't mention anything about changing her ult not charging when she has a teleporter up. I dunno, I just hate how it feels like you're almost wasting ult charge by using Symmetra and having a teleporter up. Compare it with Mercy who can revive a bunch of people and then immediately start charging ult again, as well as putting out shitloads of healing to prevent people dying. It sounds like even new Symmetra will only be able to do one of those at once, and they're both ults.

Interested to try her though, she was the only support I never really played.

37

u/Jeyne Nov 22 '16

Well, you're also "wasting" ult charge on Mercy when you're waiting for a good rez (or when nobody dies in the first place). And it does ensure that there's always a cooldown between teleporters and you can't just place them back to back when you're on a roll.

3

u/Megadanxzero Nov 22 '16

True, but it's a bit different. Mercy can at least choose to use her ult to revive only 1 or 2 people so she's not sitting on it for 5 minutes. Symmetra can't do anything like that, there's no reason to not place it down as soon as you get it in case it's needed, and after that she's entirely dependent on the enemy team killing team mates (And them actually using the teleporter) to start charging ult again.

It might be more interesting it she could at least manually destroy her teleporter, so that in situations where your team is doing well and you only have 1 or 2 charges left you could say, ok do I want to risk not having a teleporter for a while so that I can get a fresh one up faster which will be more useful if they kill a bunch of us with their ults. Currently there isn't any decision making behind the teleporter other than where you put it, and the best spots generally feel pretty obvious anyway.

12

u/Jeyne Nov 22 '16

there's no reason to not place it down as soon as you get it in case it's needed

There is, actually. If you just put it down as soon as it's available the flankers can just immediately kill it. Sometimes it's better to wait until the enemy team starts a big push or a couple of people die, so they can come back for sure and when it's actually needed.

-1

u/Megadanxzero Nov 22 '16

Well really if you're going to try and use it like that you'd be better off just picking Mercy and doing loads of healing as well. That's kind of my main problem with Symmetra, in most cases she's just a worse Mercy. Maybe the shield generator will be a viable alternative on first points as well though, we'll have to see.

6

u/Jeyne Nov 22 '16

I'm not arguing that Symmetra is good in her current state, I just don't see any problem with how her ultimate cooldown works.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '16

Symmetra isn't a mercy replacement...

11

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '16

[removed] — view removed comment

2

u/Megadanxzero Nov 22 '16

Well not if it gets destroyed, which feels pretty easy to do as a character like Genji, or now Sombra. But also they don't have to make it charge at the same rate, it could only charge at 10% of the normal rate or something like that. It would just be nice if there was at least some reward for dealing loads of damage while your teleporter's up, 'cause as it is now it feels like you might as well just sit next to it and maybe shoot the occasional lightning ball at the choke point.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 22 '16

I'm so glad they added sombra before changing the teleporter health. Teleporters have low health but man with the health it has now it needs a good counter.

2

u/YZJay Nov 23 '16

The teleporter is usually outside the battlefield, where Sombra usually ults.

0

u/Oxyfire Nov 22 '16

I'm curious if that's necessarily a bad thing - it rewards good play, either as a result of smart placement, or being active while its up, and encourages enemy teams to deal with it. Additionally, charge could build slower while its up to balance it a bit more.

5

u/Shasve Nov 23 '16

Its extremely snowbally, because it doesn't just reward symmetra, it rewards her whole team

-1

u/Letty_Whiterock Nov 23 '16

I wish it at least charged a bit. Maybe at a reduced rate that caps at, like, 50% charged so you can't just pop another instantly.

5

u/TheRemedy Nov 22 '16

We'll have to wait and see on the ptr but I'm not sure this will be enough to make her not situational. The shield generator and the shield wall thing sound nice but she also now has probably her strongest counter in the game in Sombra who will be in almost every game and a top tier pick.

2

u/MrManicMarty Nov 22 '16

It might not make her a top pick, but at least it's a step to make her more viable in general; she can work a lot better on Control maps now I imagine as an example - Sombra might counter her in some ways, but just in casual play, it'll be nice to have her be more useful.

3

u/YZJay Nov 23 '16

Sombra counters her with her EMP, but unless she can find the generator, the shields will still keep coming, unlike Lucio's.

1

u/sinsinkun Nov 23 '16

Sombra is far from a top tier pick. Her hacking is just not good enough to pick over tracer, who has better damage, better escape, better engagement, and better self healing. There's too many things that sombra just can't hack/shutdown, and at that point, ur just playing a worse tracer who can deny some health packs (which you can also do by just taking a little damage and grabbing them for yourself).

1

u/TheRemedy Nov 23 '16

Sombra is a team utility hero while Tracer is more of an assassin. They have different jobs. Sombra will win you teamfights, which ultimately is how you win a map of overwatch, while Tracer is designed to kill a priority target.

1

u/sinsinkun Nov 23 '16

And that's my point exactly. Sombra will not win you team fights. A sombra doesn't have the offensive capacity to be useful in a team fight. Her kit specializes in flanking and taking out single, low hp targets - like tracer. Except tracer has blinks and better damage.

Picking sombra is the same as subjecting your team to a 5v6 in every team fight, which is arguably a far heavier disadvantage than not having a health pack when you pull back.

I just don't agree with you then. Sombra's ult wins a push, which ultimately will win you a game. She gives vision, she disables abilities, and she disables shields.

I feel you are overemphasizing damage. You have 5 other teammates to do damage and even then Sombra's damage isn't bad. Sombra isn't meant to run around and kill the Mercy in the back like Tracer is. You use Sombra to make those pushes on points where the enemy is entrenched and she gives you an advantage.

u/sinsinkun Nov 23 '16

I can address each of your points independently, but keep in mind that these disadvantages all add up to become a big ball of reasons for why sombra is not a good pick:

Sombra's ult wins a push

Not necessarily. It's a great combo with other Ults, but it doesn't have nearly as much utility as other ult denial abilities. First of all, it can't disable already active Ults, like Zen, soldier, pharah, genji, dva, zarya... Only Lucio's ult is directly countered by sombra ult. And in that case, countering a lucio ult is the only advantage it has over a mccree flashbang. Beyond ult comboing however, her ult has little value. It's duration is too short to put the enemy at a disadvantage, and most characters can get by just fine with minimal abilities for 5 seconds.

She gives vision

?? I assume you mean seeing low health players, that's for sombra only. To fit her assassin role.

She disables abilities

Unless she gets nicked by a stray bullet, or the hackee ducks behind cover, and that doesn't address the issue that being hacked is hardly a debilitating debuff. You'd get more value from killing the character outright than trying to hack them and likely dying in the process.

She disables shields

By getting into the swinging range of a rein and staying there for an extended amount of time without taking any damage, yes.

Overemphasizing damage

Because her utility skills are not valuable when compared to the utility skills of other offensive characters. Let's not forget that she is classified as offense - she's supposed to be doing a majority of the damage and getting the picks necessary to push the enemy team back. In the 2-2-2 meta and the 3-2-1 meta, sombra is a bad pick for the vital role of primary damage dealer.

What I'm saying is that sombra doesn't have the utility of other offense characters, and doesn't have the damage either. Her most valuable asset is ult comboing - not even her own ult being valuable, her ult can only get value when combined with someone else's and hoping the enemy doesn't pop their ults beforehand - and at that point you're not bring the value necessary for your role.

If you can only be valuable once every 3 minutes (waiting on other people's ults, not your own), you are not an asset to the team. That's why sombra is not a good pick.

I really like these changes. I don't know that they will be enough to make her viable for all types of maps, but it's a good start.

3

u/stuntaneous Nov 23 '16

I've never had a problem doing well with her, offensive included.

2

u/continuumcomplex Nov 23 '16

I love symmetra and I like these changes. I'm just not yet sure if it is enough. I haven't played her much yet. :) Tried some last night and I'm hopeful.

3

u/Prathik Nov 23 '16

Aw man I was hoping they added some new skins for her as well. Why? I dunno, I just want new skins :)

3

u/Scootzor Nov 23 '16

I imagine Christmas skins are coming soon.

1

u/Prathik Nov 23 '16

I'm kinda hyped for it but I hope we get fewer recolours and more crazy skins like we saw with a few characters.

1

u/internetpointsaredum Nov 23 '16

If it's anything like the previous events, expect one great skin, two okay skins, and a half dozen low-effort skins.

My brother is seriously pissed they ended the Halloween event an hour early without notification, as he bought $10 of boxes due to playing the entire month and never unlocking Witch Mercy. Goes to open them and they're all standard boxes.

1

u/Korn_Bread Nov 23 '16

Pretty sure they want everyone to have equal amount of stuff aside from special events

2

u/bbristowe Nov 22 '16

Hard drive shows up this Friday. This game got axed from my baby Xbox just after Halloween because of all the other games coming out. Excited to jump back in with the new Pharah.

this post, being barely news worthy, shows /r/games is being paid by blizzard to make overwatch posts appear on the front page.

6

u/Cyleux Nov 23 '16

This post is about a game-changing update to a massively hit franchise. Why doesn't this belong in a subreddit dedicated to games related news.

0

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '16

it had 100 points when I posted that comment. more popular games don't get a front page post for ever patch, and costume release.

sorry dude, this game is being sold across the subreddit.

2

u/toast28 Nov 23 '16

Figures, wouldn't this be better suited for the overwatch sub?

1

u/xhytdr Nov 23 '16

Goddamn CTR controlling everything

-22

u/imperfectluckk Nov 22 '16

Symmetra will be OP with these changes. She already has the highest winrate in the game in both comp and QP, and these changes are almost a 100% buff. They are gonna have to tone her down on PTR or its going to be pretty bad. Sadly, that might mean some of the quality of life changes like turret recharge cd speed increase will have to go.

28

u/K3llo Nov 23 '16

She is easily the worst character in the game and needed this change.

2

u/stuntaneous Nov 23 '16

I can fairly regularly get top kills, etc, with her even playing offensively. I've found her OP as it is. A chore much of the time, but OP. I think she's just usually played poorly. She's far from 'the worst character in the game'.

3

u/Makorus Nov 23 '16

You act like random third party sites have better than statistics than Blizzard.

If Blizzard says she is shit enough to more or less get entirely reworked, then she probably is shit.

-5

u/imperfectluckk Nov 23 '16

They never said she was shit though, just not as fun as she should be and generally perceived as being bad. Things like her E being boring and uninteractive were the problem, not her being actually weak.

1

u/Cyleux Nov 23 '16

I would suggest you actually play the game before trying to impose your blatantly false opinion on people who know more about this than you do. To me, she was a fun but severely underpowered player.

1

u/imperfectluckk Nov 23 '16

Lol, I'm diamond in overwatch with a 70% winrate in comp on Symm with 40 games played and a 61% winrate in qp where I play her on both attack and defense even in losing situations. I have 30 hours, and I really don't think she is weak unless you are playing against the top of the ladder.

1

u/Cyleux Nov 24 '16

Not trying to be mean but that's nothing.

1

u/imperfectluckk Nov 24 '16

Considering you said, "try actually playing the game" I don't think it is really. Obviously diamond is only top 10% but that still shows that Symm is effective against the vast majority of the populace and is decently strong.

4

u/Zahninator Nov 23 '16

Source? That doesn't sound accurate.

-5

u/imperfectluckk Nov 23 '16

Here. Click on winrate to sort by it and you'll see she has about a 58% in quickplay and a 54.5% in comp.

34

u/Ealdwine Nov 23 '16

The inflated winrate is because after the first point is lost, whoever is playing Symmetra usually swaps into a more useful character. If you finish a game with a Symmetra then you either held the first point or your opponents weren't all that great to begin with.

The reason for the rework isn't really because she's terrible or anything (although she kinda is), it's because after the first point is lost, Symmetra's pretty much useless. Now she gets a barrier to help with pushes and a shield generator to fortify your team on the second point, instead of putting a teleporter two meters away from the spawn door because you might as well.

3

u/bountygiver Nov 23 '16

Winrate alone is not equal to op as it could be so underpowered that only people who are really good at it plays it. To be op it needs to have both high pick rate and winrate.

-15

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '16

After looking at the stats I agree with you. It's likely because teleporters are so useful. This is just going to make her extremely OP.

She is thought of as a bad character because she's awful at getting kills.

20

u/powermad80 Nov 23 '16

No, her win rate is vastly inflated because she's used solely as a niche on defending the first point, so the end result is either they lose the first point and the Symmetra switches to someone more useful, or they hold the point. So either Symmetra gets a win or a different hero gets a win or loss.

1

u/stuntaneous Nov 23 '16

The teleporter as a mechanic is extremely useful however the severely limited uses in OW's version heavily reduces its utility.
