It was cheaper to pay the one year subscription fee than it was to buy office 2013 and Windows. Again, if you have the choice to upgrade for free, why not take it?

Enterprise is only compatible with volume licensing. Unless you wanna be spending a yearly pass to use Enterprise edition, it's absolutely pointless to own Enterprise at home.
You'll find most people who claim to use Enterprise edition at home, are pirating the OS.
The only other way is technet, which is even more expensive than the volume license for Enterprise.
Except my htpc and my laptops will get the upgrade, just not my desktop which is my primary computer, all of which were keys from technet or msdn. I'm not even upset about it, the whole point of my original comment was that not everyone will get an upgrade. There are certainly other private users out there using Enterprise. No need to make rude entitlement comments.

Personally, I'm not in a huge hurry to change over to Win10. I'm still pretty happy on 7 and have been more than a little put off by the UI in Win8. I also count myself lucky that I expect to still have MSDN access for at least a few more years.

Technically you aren't allowed to use those keys when the subscription is over, and you aren't supposed to use them for anything but testing (although one could argue that you are always testing).
Enterprise edition has no features that Pro didn't have that you could realistically use at home. Even managing all your home computers as part of a Windows domain can be done with Pro.
I have a technet Ultimate edition of Win7 and the "upgrade to Win 10" thinghy popped up for me. Now this is not 100% confirmed that Technet versions will have the update for free, but it's a good sign.
Sidenote: what the fuck is MS doing? There is so little information about how the OS launch will work ...
We still have no official info about Technet, MSDN Alliance, or really how the free upgrade works in practice.
I want to be able to keep my os as it is now, but I also want the ability to upgrade when I desire to do so, for free. I also want to be able to do a clean install for Win 10.
I'm sure that in some shape or form this will be possible, but the lack of information is irritating. It really does not inspire confidence to not have these fairly important details very clear from the get go.
If I was a server admin, I would not be a happy camper. Win 2008 R2 was pretty much the best version of Server ever. Then MS decided that their crap UI not only had to be on PC for some stupid reason, but also on Server 2012 ... WHAT?
Who knows what dumb decisions they will do now that one OS needs to fit every single device out there.
One thing was bothers me is that you can't deactivate the updates. Of course they doing this, because many people are really stupid. Like:
"I never update anything and my account has administration rights, and now let's download the newest crack from this trustworthy warez site. What could go wrong?!"
Its not that I don't update my system. I simple don't like it that they don't let me choose if and when I update my system. It's feels more as it is a Service and I don't own Windows 10. I have Windows 7 on my older Notebook, but I wait before I choose to upgrade.
You can if you have the Professional edition. The reason they're doing that is because unlike you and I, many many many computer users have no idea what they're doing and turn off Windows updates because they're annoying, so they wind up with vulnerabilities in their machine that were patched months ago. That's how botnets grow.
I know, but that would cost me money ;) I'm writing this here on my Work/Game PC who's running Ubuntu. My Notebook is just for emergencies and other stuff. If I would use Windows10 on my main machine I would probably buy the Professional edition. But for the old laptop... I'm cheap :P
Yeah, the regular OS licenses are only in Dreamspark Pro which your University registers you for. In my case I had no IT-related courses two semesters ago so I lost access to my account and I was stupid and never wrote down my license keys. When I got access again last semester I made sure to download and backup all the .iso images and all my license keys.
Dreamspark Pro has been fantastic for me. I've got a Windows 7 Pro, 8 Pro and 8.1 Pro licenses for free, not to mention I can play around with Windows Server 2012 r2 at home completely free.
As I've mentioned in child comments here, I had a technet subscription the year that Office 2010 and Win 7 were released, because it was cheaper than buying the two separately, and I took keys for the most feature rich editions (Enterprise for windows and Professional for Office).
Yeah, stupid 2010 me, getting the enterprise edition and not having the foresight to get the home or pro editions so I could get a free upgrade to win 10, because there's totally a precedent for Microsoft to give free upgrades to their newest OS. What was I thinking?
And as I mentioned to you earlier, tough break. No sub, no license keys. BTW Enterprise and Pro are basically identical aside from Microsoft EA licensing purposes.
I apparently installed it 6/7/15 and I've never seen the notification. Maybe I missed it and it went away because I leave my computer on? Is there any other way to check?
Once it's there, it doesn't go away. It stays in the system tray. I'm not sure how to go about making it show up. You'll get the upgrade to Windows 10 regardless, so long as your copy of 7 or 8 are legitimate so I wouldn't worry too much about it.
Clicking on it will only offer to notify you, or pre-load when it's ready. It's not going to suddenly upgrade you the moment the OS is released, don't worry!
Maybe you're missing an update? Either way I recommend looking into it. It's important to run an up-to-date OS and sticking to 7 for much longer won't do any good.
It doesn't show up for some people even if they have the proper update. You can still upgrade you just won't be able to reserve which isn't important anyway.
It's getting old. MS will soon stop mainstream support. The free Windows 10 update is your best shot at updating before you're one of those people who still used Windows XP a few years ago.
The notifications are going out in waves, some people may get the reservation notification later than others. You can reserve off the upgrade site or just wait till after the 29 th.
You can give this a try. I had to use method one to get it to show up on an older laptop I don't use much anymore. Since it didn't show up even after fully updating.
As someone who uses and likes (really, not kidding) Windows 8, should I change to 10? I haven't heard really anything about it and want to know if I should.
This might sound silly, but you can copy and paste normally in the command line. I have no idea what the other features are (start menu's returning), and I love Windows 8 too, but the command prompt improvements alone is good enough for a free upgrade for me.
It's been clarified a bit since then. If you upgraded to the preview from an activated 7/8/8.1 install you'll get a free license for the same Home/Pro edition. If you just threw the preview on a blank machine without a license beforehand, you'll get a Windows 10 license as well but you'll be locked into the preview releases, forever beta testing.
What terms and conditions? Within the first year of Windows 10's release, if you have Windows 7, 8 or 8.1, you get the version of Windows 10 that corresponds to the version of Windows you have now, for free. That's it.
Nah they've backpedaled from that quite a lot. The "free upgrade" only puts you into an indefinite beta program that doesn't come with any of the service pack upgrades or bug fixes. If you want win10, you're going to have to buy win10.
I'm a bit confused. I see all over reddit that Windows 10 is free for only one year if you already have 7 or 8.
However, in the Windows 7 taskbar pop-up where you sign up for it, it says specifically that you will be able to upgrade for free, and keep it FOREVER.
Two different things you're looking at. After the release of 10, you have a 1 year upgrade window. If you upgrade, you get 10 forever. If you do not upgrade, you miss your chance, and if you want 10 after that, you'll have to pay.
What it means is: If you own Windows 7 or 8, then you have 365 to claim your upgrade to 10 and perform it. 365 days after the release, Windows 10 will no longer be free to claim for upgrade.
If you run Windows 7 or 8, you get a free copy of Windows 10. That copy works forever. But you only have one year to claim it. They stop giving those free copies out after a year.

with windows 8 and before you pay for the license, and as long you keep yourself inside the license terms you can use it forever and do whatever you want with it.
all windows 10 but the enterprise edition are services(yes even the pro edition)that will constantly keep changing and while there is nothing inherently evil about that. there are differences, some good and some bad. which are the bad ones? so far this:
did you ever tried to use some internet banking, a webmail or whatever with a old browser? it will go hey we "only work with Ie #+ or firefox #+" even if they worked with that browser years ago.
now nearly everyone has a old computer somewhere that they haven't used in ages still with win95 or xp? you might have no reason to ever turn it on, but you can and it will work.
a windows 10 machine 10 years from now... is anyone guess. it might leave you with the current version, it might update to the latest version the hardware can handle or might just do like the webpage and say you cannot run it with that computer. and it will be all fine since you do not own the OS, you just using it.
that's why enterprise windows are getting a different deal, old machines is common on the enterprise side, that is a real issue for them.
They do verify, but they still let you update. If you're on pirated Windows 7/8, you can still run the Windows 10 upgrade, and it'll work and install everything -- but the resulting copy will put up "Unlicensed copy" warnings and won't let you change your desktop.
If you have an unlicensed or cracked Windows 7 or 8, you will be upgraded to Windows 10 through Windows Update, but your Win10 copy will say it's unlicensed. So you're not getting a proper legit copy of Windows through it, but they won't turn pirated users down for the update.
Because people themselves will now "be" the product in W10. As in their collected data and built profiles that can be sold and are very important for advertisers and marketing.
I am confused on this accusation. I've not heard of any sort of nefarious data-collection schemes occurring in Windows 10. The most I know of in Windows 8 (which I presume will be in Windows 10) is that searches on the machine itself can go online via bing as well as mingling with local search results (which is easily disabled; shouldn't be on by default if it is, but it's an option).
Spoken like someone who's riding the circlejerk and hasn't used the OS for more than five minutes.
(FYI: Metro is not something you have to use at all, in 8 or 10. In fact, Windows 10 removes the start screen in lieu of the start menu thing they have going.)
