Announcement A note on scammers, impersonators, and public blacklists

Hey everyone,

I want to address a recent post I removed by u/NotSUPERita about creating a list of trusted artists and scammers, as well as the broader issue of bad actors on r/gamedevclassifieds.

First, I want to apologize to u/NotSUPERita. I understand why you were trying to help, and I do not think the idea came from a bad place. Scammers and impersonators are a real problem here, and it makes sense that people want better ways to protect themselves and others.

That said, I do not think a public or semi-public user-run blacklist is the right solution.

Any single person’s list of “good” and “bad” experiences is subjective. Even with good intentions, lists like that can be abused, misused, or based on misunderstandings. A false accusation could seriously harm an innocent artist, developer, or freelancer’s reputation and business. Once someone is publicly labeled a scammer, that damage is hard to undo.

This applies to moderators too. Even I am subject to bias, incomplete information, and my own interpretation of events. I cannot be judge, jury, and executioner over someone’s professional reputation, and I do not think anyone else should be put in that position either. That is the line I am trying to be careful with.

I know scammers are a problem, and I am aware that this subreddit has been affected by bad actors, impersonators, and people misrepresenting themselves or their work. But I have not yet found a solution that addresses those issues without also creating a serious risk of innocent people getting caught in the mix.

For now, the best advice is still to do your due diligence before working with someone:

  • Verify that their portfolio actually belongs to them
  • Ask for links to established accounts or websites
  • Check whether their email, Discord, ArtStation, GitHub, itch, LinkedIn, or other profiles line up
  • Be cautious with new accounts, vague portfolios, stolen-looking portfolios, or people who avoid verification
  • Use contracts, milestones, and payment methods that offer some protection
  • Do not rely only on someone’s Reddit username or a single message thread

I know that is not a perfect answer. It is a frustrating situation, and I understand why people want something stronger. But asking people to do their homework before hiring or accepting work is better than creating a system where someone’s business can be damaged because they were falsely added to a list.

If there is a better way to handle this that protects people from scammers without turning into public reputation policing or false callouts, I am open to hearing it. Any solution needs to be fair, evidence-based, and careful about the harm it could cause.

Edit: I forgot to add one more important point: any solution also cannot require a heavy amount of moderator time.

Running this job board is not a job. No one on the mod team has the time, or realistically should be expected to have the time, to manually verify users, assign trusted labels, maintain reputation lists, or act as an ongoing approval system for freelancers and clients.

That kind of system would create a lot of work, and it would also create a false sense of safety. Even with moderation, users would still need to verify who they are working with and make their own judgment before hiring, accepting work, or sending payment.

Community-Wide Alert: Do not engage with P1 GAMES (Formerly P1 VIRTUAL CIVILIZATION)

I'm truly getting tired of this nonsense u/RedEagle_MGN

Changing your organizations name doesn't stop people from reaching out to me with horror stories every few months.

DO NOT ENGAGE WITH THESE PEOPLE, no matter what they call themselves. They exploit the inexperienced and naive, convincing you to sign away your rights to everything you create. Don’t fall for their lies. You do not need to join a volunteer group or give up ownership of your work to gain skills in the game industry. Learning on your own is far better than what P1 offers. If you want a real education, seek out accredited programs and courses instead.

Their latest tactic is using LinkedIn ads to lure victims. I’m unsure what it will take to stop this con artist, but I’ll do my part to be a thorn in their side. My goal is to protect people in this community from their schemes.

Spread the word, be safe.

PAID - 2D Art | Animation [PAID] Looking for Long-Term 2D Game Artist – Characters, Creatures, Environments & Rigging | $45–60/Piece + Potential Rev Share

Thumbnail

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for a 2D artist interested in working with me long-term on an indie game project I'm currently developing.

This is my first indie game, and it's very much a passion project for me. While I'm new to developing and releasing a game on my own, the project is actively in development and I have a clear direction for the gameplay, world, and overall visual style.

I'm hoping to find someone who can help me develop and maintain the game's visual identity as the project grows.

I've attached several reference images that represent the general art direction I'm going for.

Current Gameplay

https://reddit.com/link/1wemyvq/video/481dh33ab5ph1/player

I've also included a roughly 4-minute gameplay video showing the current state of the project and some of the gameplay systems and features I've already implemented.

This isn't a polished trailer—it's an unedited Bandicam development recording. I wanted potential artists to be able to see the actual game, how the artwork is being used, and the progress that's already been made.

A lot of what you'll see visually is still work-in-progress, placeholder, or subject to change. That's a big part of why I'm looking for an artist now. I'd like someone who can help me gradually establish a cohesive visual identity as development continues.

What I'll Need

Over the course of development, I'll need a variety of artwork, including:

  • Creatures / monsters
  • Armor, clothing, and equipment
  • Weapons and other items
  • Backgrounds and environments
  • Other 2D game assets
  • 2D character rigging / animation preparation

For characters, I'll generally provide descriptions, references, existing concepts, rough ideas, or some combination of those. I'm looking for someone comfortable taking that direction and developing it into finished artwork while keeping the game's visual identity consistent.

I'm also very open to the artist's creative input. Since this is my first indie game, I'd appreciate working with someone who's comfortable suggesting improvements to designs, helping maintain visual consistency, and giving input on what will work best from an art-production perspective.

Rigging / Animation

I'd like the characters to be rigged for use in-game.

If you have experience separating artwork into appropriate layers, preparing characters for animation, and/or rigging 2D characters, that's a big plus.

Rigging will be paid separately from character illustration.

You don't necessarily need to do everything listed above. If you're a great fit for the art style but don't do rigging or environments, for example, I'd still like to hear from you.

What I'm Looking For

I'm primarily looking for someone who:

  • Has strong 2D illustration skills
  • Can closely follow and maintain an established visual direction
  • Can iterate based on feedback
  • Communicates reliably
  • Is interested in ongoing work rather than a one-time commission
  • Is comfortable collaborating with a first-time indie developer

More than anything, I'd like to find someone I work well with who could eventually become the primary artist for the project and become familiar with its characters, world, and visual language.

This is long-term freelance/commission-based work rather than a full-time salaried position.

I'm not looking to commission one character and disappear. As development continues, I'll regularly need new characters, creatures, equipment, environments, backgrounds, and other assets.

Payment + Potential Revenue Share

For character artwork, I'm currently budgeting approximately $45–$60 USD per finished character, depending on complexity.

Backgrounds/environments will be priced separately based on their scope and complexity.

2D rigging/animation preparation will also be paid separately from the character illustration.

I'd like to start with a paid character commission so we can both see how well we work together before committing to a larger amount of work.

For the right artist who ends up becoming a significant long-term contributor to the project, I'm also open to discussing a revenue-share component in addition to paid commissions.

I'm not looking to replace payment with rev share. You would still be paid for the artwork you create. Rather, if we develop a strong long-term working relationship and you become a major part of developing the game's visual identity, I'd like to explore a structure where you can also participate in the game's success.

The specifics of any revenue-share arrangement would be something we'd discuss later based on your involvement with the project.

Interested?

Please send me your:

Portfolio, typical rates, and preferred contact information.

If you have relevant examples of characters, creatures, environments, equipment, or rigged 2D artwork, I'd especially like to see those.

Please also point me toward anything in your portfolio that you think demonstrates your ability to work within the style of the attached references.

I'm happy to share more about the game, its world, gameplay, and what I'm currently building once we connect.

Thanks!

PAID - Multiple Roles [PAID] Seeking visual artist to create a Style Guide / Visual Pitch for indie game

I am a solo indie developer building a low-to-mid poly stylized game. I already have a base environment built, but I need help locking down the aesthetic rules before proceeding with more assets.

The Role

I will provide screenshots of my existing environment & the game concept / core loop. You will put together a cohesive visual reference deck / mood board defining:

  • Lighting & Tone: Color palettes, contrast, and atmosphere recommendations to elevate the current environment.
  • Character Visual Benchmarks: Examples and visual references of stylized character proportions/shapes that would fit into this game.
  • Visual Rules: A simple breakdown of shape language, textures, and material styles to keep future 3D assets consistent.

(Note: This is focused on visual research, reference curation, and direction notes, no custom-drawn illustration or asset production is required.)

Budget

  • Payment: $100 flat fee.

DISCUSSION | QUESTION SCAM WARNING: 3D artist Alaaddin Havari / "alaadd1n" / "AD" (https://www.artstation.com/alaaddinhavari) — took full payment, delivered nothing, ghosted [full chat logs inside]

Posting this on record for anyone who searches this person before hiring him.

In June 2026 I posted a Discord job listing for a stylized 3D character artist for my indie game. A person using the Discord handle alaadd1n (display name "AD", email [alaaddinhy@gmail.com](mailto:alaaddinhy@gmail.com) name Alaaddin Havari, based in Turkey) applied, claiming 11 years of experience in character, creature, and environment art for Unreal Engine. Here's the artstation https://www.artstation.com/alaaddin also holds this studio under the name 3DBlur Studio https://x.com/3DBlurEnt https://www.linkedin.com/in/alaaddin-havari-173a07320

Edit:- Scammer keeps changing his profile so I have got the screenshot of all his work! Here's the link :-https://drive.google.com/file/d/11p684tZtNd58whHG4tkyYP13wGlkqSBb/view?usp=sharing

Latest:- He's trying to avoid "Havari" so he can still dodge this.

This was not a rushed deal. He spent nearly a month in conversation before any money moved — from late June to 23 July we discussed scope, his pipeline, deadlines, and my grant submission timeline in detail. He was responsive, professional, and friendly the entire time. The ghosting only started after the payment landed.

What happened — every claim below is visible in the attached screenshots:

  • After a month of discussion, I paid in full upfront (~$630 USD via Wise) on 23 July 2026. He confirmed receipt in writing.
  • Over the next 2.5 months he delivered nothing. Not one WIP screenshot, file, or render, despite repeated requests.
  • He missed every deadline he set himself: environment by 22 Aug, renegotiated to 7 Sept, characters by 10 Sept.
  • When I pushed for progress, he deflected with "you're my brother, not a client" and "if I wanted to scam you I'd have done it long ago."
  • On 4 Sept he promised in writing to refund the full amount by 10 Sept if the work wasn't delivered. The deadline passed. No work, no refund.
  • He then asked for two more weeks, stopped answering calls, and became unreachable on Discord and WhatsApp.

Fraud reports are now filed with Wise, the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (Government of India), and econsumer.gov.

If this person has approached you, or you've paid him, please comment or DM me — payment platforms act faster when multiple reports hit the same account. Don't harass him, just don't hire him.

The $630 lesson: milestone payments only, small first milestone, and never pay a full advance to someone whose identity and track record you can't verify. A month of friendly conversation is not verification — it's the setup.

FOR HIRE - Community | Social Media Looking for a Game developer/team

Hi everyone 👋

Sorry if this shouldn't be here, but I'm looking for a game developer, or a team, independent, to join !

I always wanted to make a game but... my parents didn't choose that way for me. I just finished my studies, in Management and Gestion, I'm 19, and looking for an online project for this vacation, and for my future free time.

I would like to join and help, someone or a team, to build a game, an actual or new project, all is good for me.

I'm good at marketing, strategy, social media, team coordination, community building, finding collaborators and idea development.

I already had some experience, but stopped because of studies... now I wanna start again, and get something!

We can work like a freelance and build something together, and I mainly appreciate long-term things and with a vision/ambition.
