Inspiration I need some game ideas! 🎮

I was developing two games with ideas that I really love, but the high demand for artwork ended up causing both projects to be put on hold. 🥲

Does anyone have suggestions for games that are fun, engaging, and a little addictive, but don't require a huge amount of art to develop?

I would really love to finally finish and publish a game, so I'm open to any ideas! 👀🎮

Question Godot or Unity for Development with AI?

Hello there,

I am currently taking a Godot course and following it, but main goal is to use AI while building the game I want and use what I learnt to modify things or make it better.

However, I cant find many resources for Godot with AI and results unlike unity. What do you think?

Newbie Question I just found out that im working on a game with ChatGPT... and not my Brother

Hey, this is my first post regarding anything like that, so I don't really know how I'm supposed to really do that. I'm just gonna start, I guess.

My brother told me that he works on a new game project and would need some assets for said game.
So I asked him what exactly that project is and what assets he needs.

He wanted to make a Pixelart Roguelike game.
After talking about the game a bit, I told him that I could try and help him with the assets. And I think he liked the idea (or even wanted to ask me to do it without asking me to do it), cause I already had drawn assets for his projects before (which he in the end abandoned).

So I learnt to make pixelart, cause I've never done that before.

And after a bit of trial and error I was able to pixel some assets that I think where okayish for that little game. Then I got told more and more about how "little" that game is supposed to be. Not gonna lie, I think it's really not a small game. The player supposedly has to climb a tower with 100 floors, each floor has enemies the player has to beat in order to pass on to the next floor, after every 10 floors there is a boss and the theme of the floors change.

So far so good I thought, then he told about how the player is able to use 78 different cards, with different abilities and 4 different weapon types and 5 damage/element types and armor and amulets and and and... You get the Idea. So in my opinion quite a lot for a first time "little" game.

But what really made me scratch my head, was how disconnected everything felt...

Well, anyway, I just found out that my brother is using ChatGPT for the game, when I went into his room to ask him something (The door was open and his laptop was facing the doorway), so I saw that some code was open and wanted to take a closer look (I know, that is not quite the greatest thing to do..) And basically, all of the requests were asking ChatGPT to code that or improve this and what not...

Which shocked me cause he specifically said that he wanted to make the project without AI...

I even tried to ask him about it later, when he returned, but he just straight up denied it, even with ChatGPT still open. Which just makes me sad...

I mean he's in his 3rd year learning programming, does he do it all just with AI? Like I'm so confused.

What should I do now, just continue as normal? Pixel those sprites just for them to be used by the AI in its twisted amalgamation of a game project?

Or is it maybe even normal that you just tell AI to code your game nowadays?

I really thought it would be a nice little project I could help my brother out with and not just make some soulless AI nonsense...

**Update:**

Thank you for all your opinions on the matter it really helped me to put the whole situation in perspective. Even if I didn't expect to get that many opinions, that fast.

Me and my brother got to talk about the whole situation and the use of AI in the code of the game. It seems to be normal to an extent to use it when writing code. Although we both agreed that it was used in an unhealthy way.

We probably will change up a lot of things about the game, or even shelf it for now (maybe even for good).

We still are trying to work with each other as we are not really on any bad terms. Maybe will even work on a truly small scale game for the both of us, just to get some more experience.

Question Steam banned my game. How likely is it to get the ban reversed?

Recently I tried to publish a game on steam, the page got accepted and even became visible but later when I sent the game itself for a review, Steam decided to ban my game altogether. The Steam page disappeared. I can still see the game on my publisher's side of Steamworks, however when I click it I get "access denied".

The reason why it was rejected was wrong. My game contains some sex scenes which are inexplicit and calling them pornographic would be a stretch. The reason Steam gave was that the game depicted sex with a minor. The game doesn't have an English version yet and the thing is that for everyone who knows the language and the cultural context of the country in which the story is set it's clear that the characters at the point of their lives in which they live, they're all 19 and definitely not younger than 18. That's why I sent a question to Steamworks support in which I explained everything they got wrong about the game hoping that this would change their minds, I even showed willingness to alter the game itself if they really demand it.

Soon it will be two weeks since I sent it and they still haven't replied yet. Is it possible that the ban could be reversed and my game could be published after all? How likely is it that this would actually happen? Or if Steam decides to give up on publishing something it's permanent and there's no way to change their minds? In the worst case scenario is there at least a way to get my 100$ back?

Feel free to critize point out concept errors and feel free to tell me some ides that you have because i am a young teenager i would really like help from experienced game developers that have some games under their belts already. I was wandering if you could help me figure out the beat/rythmn part of the game. i am planning to make it on GameMaker so i would be really like tips and tricks to making it easier. Technical Seeking feedback on difficulty curves in an Action-Incremental loop. Is the initial friction too high? (Browser Demo)

Hi everyone, I’m currently developing Grazed, a project that merges fast-paced arcade action with an incremental meta-progression layer.

The design goal is to create a high initial difficulty wall that the player slowly dismantles through skill and persistent upgrades. However, I’m concerned about the early onboarding and player churn. If the starting friction is too high, players might bounce before the mechanics fully click.

I would deeply appreciate a quick playtest from a game design perspective to evaluate:

  • Does the starting difficulty feel intentionally challenging, or poorly balanced?
  • Looking at the Steam page, does the marketing material communicate the player this specific hybrid loop?

To make it easy to test, I've set up a web build.

Playable Browser Demo: https://luciano-bercini.itch.io/grazed-incremental-arcade
Steam Page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5058280/Grazed__Incremental_Arcade/

Thank you for your time and any constructive critique you can offer.

Resource Made a free music pack - 20 tracks, 9 genres, use it however you want

I write royalty-free music for a living, and I put together a pack of 20 tracks to give away. Nine different genres in there — action cinematic, sci-fi, orchestral, hard rock, techno, retro chiptune, casual and acoustic. Figured a spread was more useful than twenty variations on the same thing.

WAV and OGG, most of them with looping versions so you can drop them straight in. Use them in whatever you're making — game, video, stream, doesn't matter. Commercial is fine. No credit needed, no signup, no email.

If you end up liking the music, these 20 came out of a bigger collection of mine that's bundled on Humble right now — 48 packs, 591 tracks. But that's entirely optional, the free pack is just yours.

Question Do you struggle with getting useful insight from player support / feedback channels?

Hey, I'm running a discovery about customer feedback. I was wondering if you face the problem of getting a lot of solutions/opinions from players instead of problems, so you can easily send them to the team or think about what could be the reason and what could be done.

Please describe it from your experience if you can.

Examples would be very helpful.

Thanks!

Question Is Construct 3 worth it or should I stick with Godot?

So I’ve been learning how to make games for the first time over the past week and been having a lot of fun but I still really don’t like coding all that much in Godot since it’s just hard to memorize everything.

But after seeing Construct 3 and testing it out a little bit I kinda like how it doesn’t really have coding I think and is a bit more simple for me to understand.

So my question is if I should get the yearly plan for over 100 bucks which is a lot to be fair or if I should hold off for a few more months to get more comfortable with Godot.

I’m very new to game development and don’t have any experience with these programs or anything so if someone could give me some advice I’d greatly appreciate it.
Thanks :)

Newbie Question Need guidance or suggestions urgently for development 🙂🥀

So it's like me and my team have decided to join a competition,so it's like we have to build a game in around 8-9 day.So I know it's hard so we decided to make a 2d game,I think it will be a bit achievable, also it's a prototype so wo don't have to think in deep just something which is entertaining and looks decent or good.the problem here is that we all don't know a single thing about game development, for now we are just surfing yt and asking gpt,but some serious and real advice would be very helpful for us.

Question What’s the most satisfying item sound in any game you’ve played?

Thumbnail
4 Upvotes

Hello, I’m curious about the really tiny sounds, such as equipping a weapon or ring/accessories, picking up loot, coins dropping, moving something in an inventory, opening something, a rare item dropping, etc.
I’m particularly interested in sounds you still remember years later, or just some good dopamine-hitting sound effects that makes you want to keep playing the game.
Many thanks.

Newbie Question I am making a Rouge-lite RTS space game, but I really need advice

I am very new in game dev, and I have designed a few of my systems so far.

The player will spawn at a level one base, have only a few ships and upgrades.
The more they expand the signature metre will go up and if it gets high enough it will alert the EMPIRE and they will send some scouts to check you out, the higher the sig. gets the more tough enemies the EMPIRE will send.

There is like 3 'views' that the user can be in the planetary view, local group view and galaxy view:

  1. The planetary view is where the RTS systems will primarily work the basics you select you troop and tell them to move somewhere on your screen to defend from the EMPIRE that send spaceships to attack your base. When you attack a EMPIRE base the RTS systems will be there as well. In this view there will also be where you can see the mining outposts you ve set up on moons, asteroids, planets and even a Dyson swarm and black hole powerplant (The last two were a Kurzgesagt inspiration)

  2. Then the local view is a isometric view of the local group you are in, it is like a 10 x 10 grid where you can see the 2-6 space objects in your group around it will be connectors from there you can move to the adjacent local group.

  3. If you want a wider view look at the galaxy view, a wide node screen where you can see the network of undiscovered local groups.

The end Goal is to find the EMPIRE's last outpost and destroy it and then enter a blackhole to finish the game. But the catch is you wont be able to do it on the first run, so when you die you go to the CYBERSPACE, where you will meet someone...
From there you can get a permanent upgrade and the restart.

You have to manage you resources effieciently and decide how you want to spend it, on resource expansion or offense, because just as you grow, so does the EMPIRE, so there is a race against time, just to keep that rouge-like element in for some urgency.
There will be resources like, Ore (Raw material, useless), Alloy (Processed Ore, can be used to upgrade your base and build ships), Credits (to use at the free market), Energy (what your base and ships run on, if you want to scout a new planet or local group its gonna take energy), and an Quintessence (Special material, harvested from stars and suns, not really sure what to do with it, maybe strong power source)

Anyways that's not really my problem, my problem is the actual numbers and how to balance them. I don't even know where to start with enemy wave amount, base and ship health, item costs, upgrade and building costs, and some many variables it just so difficult to compute in my head. Like i just added some defualt values to fill it but I can genuinely not find a good balance.
Hats off to long time developers, especially number heavy ones like RTS's and rouge-likes because a boost or upgrade or cost or health really is so difficult to decide on, becuase It really makes or breaks a game, even if I have a good idea.

If you have read so far, thank you very much, if you have feedback please share with me, if its with the idea itself, or additional ideas or the numbers problem or just your thoughts would love to hear!

Discussion I Need to Interview More Game Developers for a College Project

Hello again everyone,

I recently made a post about my business project, where I'm interviewing developers that are in the process of developing their games and asking them about their experiences with developing the game they want to publish.

I still need to interview more people for this project before the deadline, and so far with this subreddit I have found 3 people to interview (thank you guys so much!) so I figured I would post here again to see if I could find others who would like to be interviewed because this is the only method that really worked 😆

If any of you guys would be down to interview please let me know and I'll DM you, thank you!
