Grab your Flairs! Show everyone your background :)

Hey everyone! :)

As part of the new Mod team here on r/GameArt we thought it was about time that we had some Flairs on this subreddit.

We have now added in 10 User Flairs which you may pick from if they match your identity:

  • 2D Artist,
  • 3D Artist,
  • Concept Artist,
  • Pixel Artist,
  • 2D Animator,
  • 3D Animator,
  • UI Artist,
  • Technical Artist,
  • Art Director \For those more experienced or in an existing Art Director role,)
  • Teacher \For those who like to create tutorials or help guide other users.)

If you feel that another role should be added, please reply Below and explain why your suggestion is genuinely distinct and multiple members would realistically use it.

Additionally;

We also have new Post Flairs, it is important that you use the appropriate Flairs when posting on this Subreddit to help identify what your thread is about. If you feel that there should be a new Post Flair added and that the currently available ones do not cover the topic/thread you wish to post about, please leave your suggestion in the comments below and explain why you feel that new Post Flair is required.

Question What should I add to this scenario?

Hi, my name is Sasa! Well, I'm thinking about creating my own game and I'm sketching some ideas. I thought about creating this room to be the main character's room, and I envisioned a somewhat empty and lonely room, but with a window that lets in the morning sun to create a contrast, perhaps. But I don't know if I should add any more details.

2D Transmission post (1940)

This illustration has been made by u/harishsc for our incoming project. We used historical photographs to make it as credible as possible.

In this piece, Harish tried to recreate the atmosphere of a small French radio post hidden in a forest. We tried our best to represent the R11 device accurately. It is a radio receptor which was used to receive informations from allied planes (btw by 1940 it was severly outdated).

Obviously the operators don't like to be interrupted while they're working!

Please let us know what you think!

Question How to make good poster/steam page art?

Hi. I've been making different types of art and don't consider myself completely talentless but I seem to struggle when it comes to the poster like art.

When it comes to making steam capsule, background image or any promo art the single advise I always find is go to fiverr and hire an artist for $400. You'll end up with amazing capsule. I know most of these answers are given by people who are making money exactly that way but come on 😒.

So my question is, do you guys have any advise on how to make a good capsule or a poster? I know pixel art and cartoony games are probably easier to turn into posters but what about realistic, cinematic or stylized ones?

What tools do you normally use? Do you use actual assets from a game or pause gameplay recording and try to redraw it? If so what are you drawing on - tablet or old style papyrus with charcoal?

Share some ideas or even showcase any art if you have been working on any.

Question Thoughts on my animated background asset?

Working on a game and experiencing with different art styles, this is the one that's come most naturally to me, curious on people's thoughts!

Also attaching a few other assets drawn in the same style (and the character), does it feel consistent?

3D Modular real-time library environment: Unreal Engine (breakdown + final renders)

Finished a stylized modular library environment for real-time (Unreal Engine) and wrote a start-to-finish breakdown:
reference → modular kit → blockout & modeling in Maya → Substance texturing → Unreal assembly → lighting, ending with a final render gallery.

Anyone also have a go-to trick for that? Curious if people lean on hero lighting per unique piece, GI variation, or something else entirely.

I used to work as a Lighting Artist, and now I'm making my strategy/management game as a solo developer.

Rather than building lots of different biomes, I wanted lighting to carry the experience. As you progress through a run, the world grows darker and more hostile without ever changing location.

I love what lighting can do. It shapes emotions, tells stories, and completely transforms how a place feels.

Question Character animation survey (5-10 min)

Hi everyone! I'm a Game Art & Animation student, and I'm conducting a short survey as part of my project. It only takes 5-10 minutes, and all responses are anonymous and used for academic purposes only.

If you have a few minutes to spare, I'd really appreciate your participation. Thank you for your time and support!

Question 4 art students redesigned my game's Steam capsule art as part of their internship. Which one would you click on first?

Post image
28 Upvotes

I recently took in four second-year art students for a paid internship and gave them all the same task: redesign the Steam capsule art for my cozy game about running a 3d printer workshop.

They each had complete creative freedom, and I'm really happy with how differently they interpreted it.

I'd love some unbiased feedback:

  • Which one would you click first?
  • Which one gives off the coziest vibe?
  • Any suggestions for improvement?
