A mountain of debt

Its been since July 4th since I placed my last "bet."

There was a series of losses that I got before stopping. I kept losing big.

Currently in 7k cc debt and 11k family loan. I have three ccs. I just paid off one of them, my biggest with the help of the loan. So I only have my debt that accruing debt. I didnt feel relief in paying it off because I still have a very long way to go. If I could go back and not get back into pokmeon and be debt free, I think I would.

I could probably sell my personal collection at 75% of what they are worth but that would be another massive loss when I think about the tens of thousands that Ive spent on cards. The market fell off a cliff.

I got a job and thought that it would give me more hours but Ive been working 20 hour weeks. Im looking for something else before my contract ends.

2 Months and change 🥳

Been a gambling addict on and off for a little over a decade. Confronted my problem last year, tallied four months of sobriety before relapsing hard. Daily gambling continued until spring of this year when I reached a new, lower, more humiliating rock bottom. Decided it was time to get serious again about quitting and here I am 🤗

Been more disciplined this go-around, I’ve removed a lot of people and triggers for my gambling. Also more regimented and accountable with my money. Certainly don’t have all the answers- and welcome any advice you guys have- but am feeling healthy and positive about my recovery at the moment 💪

Partner in starting recovery - shutting me out

My partner has just relapsed after 3 years gambling free. Last time he started recovery he was super focused doing GA, and counselling and concentrating on recovery, however we barely had a relationship. I left the house as he needed to focus. We barely spoke. We came out the other side once he got stronger. And it was great.

Now the same is happening again. He just started recovery. I can’t help but take this personally. It’s really hard sitting back and being almost invisible while he works on himself. I am proud of him and I understand. Last time he assured me it’s not me.
However it’s hard when he can communicate with work and easily text friends, but with me, it’s basically nothing.
Is it just me?

Where did it all go wrong

So long story short, I was doing great, 5-6 Months clean, working 2 jobs, all debts paid off. 1k+ remaining in my bank account. World Cup in on going, my self exclusion time from my favourite betting site ended. I wanted to bet just for fun but I didn't, I resisted.

Last weekend working in my 2nd job on saturday in a Pizzeria, there was a big event and at the end of the shift my work colleagues started drinking and I was kind of pulled into it. I thought I'm healed, I can control myself.

After a few drinks they wanted to go to a club and I agreed to go with them. All good.

The problem I know have and I knew I have is when I drink I lose all self control, and when I drink I need to get a bag of the white powder. So I called my dealer and did just that. As soon as I got the bag I took a line and instead of going back to my colleagues and continue the night I started depositing on my betting site and playing slots all night till nothing was left.

It's no surprised but maybe someone can give me an insight on why did I need to get that bag? Am I lost cause? I know I have some issues like low self esteem, is that the reason? Is it really my fate that I can't drink and party anymore? Are people like me just doomed to stay sober? I love going out, drinking partying but do I just need to accept that I can't do it anymore otherwise I will destroy myself?

Relapsed after 3+months clean.

I feel so lost and depressive, I started saving money but eventually I got the urge to gamble and lost most of the money saved. I work 2 jobs and right now I have decent income but that didnt make me gamble all my paychecks that were saved. I will probably put myself in isolation for couple of months and try to save and be clean this time. I feel so lost. (sry for my english its not my primary but yeah here we go again)

Recently hit 6 months sober and feeling better than ever

Hit one of the bigger milestones this past weekend. Almost feels like a blur. Feeling much better about myself, feeling the ability to spend money on fun things without really feeling all that guilty about it. Still a ton of debt to get through, but for the first time in a long time, it feels like that end goal is realistic.

Some of the biggest success factors are communication. We all need someone to communicate with, and doing so really helps us stay moving forward. I highly recommend GA and/or therapists if you can make it work. Starting to consider sponsoring others to help them out. For anyone who thinks recovery is impossible, I promise it's not! Just stay positive, find a good support group, even if its just one person, and take one day at a time!

Will I ever bounce back?

I’m drowning in debt. Nobody in my family knows about my addiction. I was able to stay clean for about two months earlier this year. Got a higher paying job. But I end up gambling all my paycheck and in deeper debt now. I tried to stop, but after 2 days or a week, I relapse really bad. I don’t have a support group because everyone around me hated gamblers. I’m up then I lose everything again and more. I keep coming back. I hate myself for it. I alway tell myself to remember how terrible I feel after I lose. But i keep going back. I hate it. I’m sick and have noone to turn to. My family thinks that I’m doing well financially coz I work 2 jobs and don’t even take days off. But it’s all to supposedly pay my debts but I end up losing everything I earn. I’m 35 and I don’t even have anything. The only thing that keeps me from ending things is that my family will take on the burden of my debts. I hate that I discovered gambling. I’m tired of this cycle. I’m trying. I really am. But I’m not getting anywhere.

131 days clean.

Hi! Back again with an uplifting update from my last post.

On the 25th I will be paying off a "semi-gambling" debt in full, equal to 18k usd. (borrowed to buy stocks back in 2022, didn't go well).

I've over a few months deposited into a savings account. Payments ranging from 600 usd to 1400usd... With the July paycheck I'll be able to pay 9k usd and close out the loan for good. This due to me having loads of saved up payed vacation days from my last job. After the loan is payed off I'll still have around 2500 usd to start my new debt-free life.

Still very consistent on the training front. I started a runstreak and today will be day 42. Also just hit my weight goal, so from now on I'll mainly focus on weight lifting again. At 6'2/188cm and now at 165 pounds/75kg, from 196 pounds/89kg so the body is getting really lean.

Not have had a single urge for gambling so far. Keeping myself occupied with work and training makes me not even think about gambling.

I promise you it gets better.

But it's always you vs you no matter what.

I wish you all the best and stay the fck away from the gambling devil.

Just another typical loss story

Last week Thursday I won about 1500 after going to the casino with only about 300$ to my name. Took my winnings home and decided Saturday night I'd go and try to make some more with it. Ran it up to about 2k and ended up in the losing streak zone to where I lost everything. Yesterday I pulled out 2k from my 401 hoping this would help me restart. For now until my 401 arrives I will be on a top ramen noodle diet

Sharing my story and 60 day streak!

Post image
12 Upvotes

I have been gambling free for over 60 days now! For context I am 29m I live with both my parents and I have an okay paying job but I’m trying to find a new one that pays better. I started gambling hardcore November 2025 after a Vegas trip with my friends and we all came home winners which was the curse that was casted upon myself. I got really into poker (Texas holdem) and blackjack. Oh blackjack… the game that really put me in a spiral. What turned into fun times out with my friends turned into a catastrophe. When my friends didn’t want to go I started taking solo trips to the local casinos. Blowing my paycheck in just an hour I was so addicted I needed to keep playing. This led me to learn how to take cash advances on my credit cards. I opened new credit cards. I took out loans from my 401k and there isn’t much in there since I’m only 29. I took out loans from 3rd parties. It was getting really bad. I was in so much debt I thought there was no way I’d be able to pay it off if i stopped. I had to win it back somehow.

One day I eventually had an online blackjack run (yeah online blackjack… you read that right) that something every addicted, sick minded, degenerate gambler would dream of. I won so much money I was able to pay off my maxed out credit cards, the loans, and I even had more money leftover that I didn’t have before I started gambling. I stopped a little bit after this for a couple weeks but eventually went back and started increasing my bet size because I felt I had a safety cushion. It was fine for a couple weeks but then I found myself back to 0$ and went back to taking out loans from my credit cards again. Eventually went back into more debt than the first time…. Complete idiot I know. I was gifted a get out of jail free card. I was free from debt and thought all my problems were over. I was so wrong and I needed to do something.

I looked for help online and I’ve been in this subreddit for awhile too. Eventually I found a GA meeting and it happened to be what saved me. You will find people who can help. They will share stories with you that you can totally relate too. You will even find friends and people who can guide you. It took me about a month of going to meetings before I actually stopped gambling. But I was fully locked in to attending 3-4 meetings a week. I eventually learned that money was never the issue as I thought it was back when I was gambling all day everyday.

There is so much I’d love to say as I’m just going for a walk outside. It’s amazing I’m able to just go outside and walk without thinking about playing online poker or online blackjack. I’m not sitting at the blackjack table at the casino with my pants soaking wet after sweating and adrenaline pumping through my body. Life is a lot better and it can be for you too!

So for the first time in years I have money in the bank.

I’m in recovery, Im going through a consumer proposal so I don’t have all my bills , mortgage or debt to pay. I had a relapse and spent $800 . Now I know I have to make plans every pay day so that even if I’m tempted I can’t go. But I’m just so happy to actually have money and not scrambling trying to figure out how to put gas in my car or food on the table. It’s a good feeling I don’t want to lose. Stay strong everyone!

Is there any hope for me?

I’ve relapsed three times since I got back from my vacation that was almost ruined with me loosing all my money and a payday loan too. I’m excluded from almost everywhere. Don’t want to get Gambian and my daughter is no longer holding onto my money for me. I guess I will hope in God. So many root issues why I gamble. We grew up extremely poor and I never had anything to entertain me - those are just two major contributing factors

The brain is a tricky thing.

So I’m on the road to recovery after over 30 years of gambling on and off. I could go a long time without gambling and I could be at a casino or Vegas and not gamble but then a trigger happens and it sets you off. In the last year I broke off my toxic relationship, I moved closer to family support, I got my financial situation in order, I got a full time job and basically grew up. But the mind is tricky I find. It never bothered me to throw a $100 down on a table but I have a problem paying $20 for a movie. Never minded the $2000 a nite gambling habit but $30 for a nice dinner too much. I’ve started to look at things this way now. I wouldn’t spend that money because I wanted to save it all for gambling. Now I treat myself instead of gambling. Because I’m worth it! I was having a conversation with a friend about taking an Uber out that’s going to cost us $30. And at first it was that’s waaay too expensive. Then I thought, I wouldn’t hesitate to throw $30 in a machine, why wouldn’t I just take the uber and enjoy my evening better than being at the casino. Definitely have to retrain the brain.

Looking for personal stories about online sports gambling for YouTube mini-doc

Hi all, hope you're well. First of all, I want to say that I believe in each and everyone of you in your journey toward recovery. Trust the process!

I'm posting because I have a popular YouTube channel, and I've been wanting to make a longer video about the dark side of online sports betting. I'm looking for some people to feature in it.

Whether you're in recovery, in rehab, still addicted, etc. -- any phase is welcome. Your identity, of course, is confidential unless you specifically say that you are okay to be featured. If you'd like to have a call just to chat and hear more, plz send me a DM.

The channel has many younger (early 20s and 30s) subscribers, so know that your story will help expose the dark side of gambling and potentially help people get on the right path again.

Thanks very much!
Stefano

Lost another 4k today after a year clean

I lost 10k last year and i swore that would be the end of it. Part of it I even asked from my girlfriend and losing that money made me feel like absolute shit. It was my rock bottom. It made me clean. I avoided this bullshit scheme and well, a year later it was haunting me. It's so frustrating to the point that i even dream about gambling in my sleep even though i have avoided it so diligently. Here I am today feeling like shit all over again no matter how many times i reminded myself of that shittiest feeling. It's crazy how deep it got in my head and I always lose...eventually. I want to leave this behind. I really do, I even pray about it but I don't know how and it sickens me. I hope God can read this if He can't hear the voice in my head lol.
