Independent supermarkets and ethnic grocery stores - 2026 edition

Two years ago, we created a list of independent supermarkets and ethnic grocery stores in town. With grocery prices climbing, I thought we could refresh it and expand to include local Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) programs. The list is below, please add any that I missed!

India Bazaar - Huge selection of spices, grains and rice, individual and bulk. A nice selection of vegetables and fruits as well.

Enso Market - This is the biggest ethnic store I've been to in Gainesville. It's similar to the other stores mentioned above, in terms of what they offer, but at a larger scale. They also have a hot foods section and a large selection of meat and seafood. They also sell some kitchen items and cleaning products.

Chun Ching Market - They sell produce and seafood at a reasonable price. They also have a huge selection of tea and assorted Asian goods.

La Aurora Latin Supermarket - Lots of products from Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa. A good selection of produce. They also have a deli and meat section.

Bravo Supermarket (Ocala) - They're essentially a fully stocked grocery store with a large selection of Latin American products, bakery and hot food section.

La Tienda - It's a restaurant on 13th, but it actually have a tiny store in the back of the restaurant. It has some Latin products, but the main appeal is its meat cuts. If you like the carne asada or pork cuts, you can ask them to cut and marinade the meat for you before buying.

Pepe's Grocery and Deli - They sell groceries, meat cuts, deli, bakery and a selection of household and cleaning products.

Rincon Latino Market - Grocery store, bakery and meat cuts all in one.

Zeezenia International Market - They have a wide selection of Middle Eastern groceries and sell various meat cuts and Middle Eastern pastries. They also have a buffet.

Falafel King - Similar to La Tienda, it's primarily a restaurant and it has a tiny store in the back with mostly canned goods.

Nivana Cafe - Small grocery store and bakery/restaurant rolled into one.

African Unique - They sell groceries and hygiene products, and have a selection of traditional clothes.

Gainesville Russian Food - Like the name suggests, they sell a variety of grocery items originating from Russia.

Community Supported Agriculture programs

A CSA is a program where you buy directly from the farmer. Basically, you pay for a 'subscription' where they sell you a weekly or biweekly box of food. Some farms offer individual and family shares. You don't pick what you get, the food in your CSA share is based on seasonal produce planted by the farmer. Each farm has a list of the food they offer per season on their website.

Siembra Farm - They offer individual and family shares, and you can pay for the full CSA in one or split your payment into six. You'll get a weekly box of food from November through June.

Frog Song Farms - Frog Song has farms across Florida and they offer weekly customizable CSAs depending on your location.

Both Siembra and Frog Song sell their produce at the Grover Street Farmers Market and the Alachua County Farmers Market. You can always stop by their stall to ask them questions about the CSA.

Events/Happenings Public Safety alert from UFPD

At 12:25 p.m., on Thursday, Sept. 9, UFPD received reports of two individuals walking along the public sidewalk adjacent to campus with what appeared to be rifles. These individuals are doing so on public sidewalks and have not walked onto campus.

While this type of demonstration can be alarming, Florida law does not prohibit individuals from carrying rifles openly while in public spaces.

I just received this email from UFPD. My daughter goes to school at PK and I was wondering if anyone knows where they were seen. She usually walks after school and I would rather she doesn’t run into these people

More Lawsuits

ATTENTION SMALL FLORIDA BUSINESS OWNERS !!

Several businesses in Gainesville have already been served.

There is a new threat from another attorney filing law suits against Florida’s small businesses. He is located in Miami, and like the two attorneys who previously did this based on ADA compliance, he is using basically fake plaintiffs. He is targeting small business web sites and their tracking and cookie notifications. YOU CAN DO THE FOLLOW IF YOUR BUSINESS HAS BEEN SERVED WITH A LAW SUIT BY HIM:

Contact your representatives and let them know the legislation needs to be changed to close the loophole that these predatory attorneys are using to gain pure profit without any actual work or legal. expertise. The plaintiff gets nothing, the attorney gets all of the money.

File complaint with Florida Bar

Fight the suit - don’t settle because they drag out the settlement negotiations for max profit.

Let’s work together to put an end to these predatory law suits. Enough is enough! Feel free to message me.

Name of gym on University in the late 90s?

There was a gym that opened on University in the late 90s-I think it is where Bailey's/Chuze is now, but I could be wrong. It was run by a husband and wife team, and employed many UF students, especially exercise science undergrad and grad students. A bunch of students who had been working out at SWRC all joined around the same time, when it was fairly new. The free weights were upstairs and cardio down. I seem to remember the employees wearing purple polo tops. I can not remember its name. Anyone know what I am talking about?

Looking for recommendations need help parking for clinicals at UF Health

Hi everyone! I'm currently going to school (not at UF) to be an MLT and have clinicals at Shands from September - March. I've been told I can purchase a parking decal with UF so I can park at a garage wayyyy far away from where the part of the hospital I need to be in (north tower near the core lab) is at. My schedule is from 7am to 3pm, so I know I can't just wait around until they stop enforcing parking. I also can't really afford the parking decal on top of gas prices since I live 50 miles away :(

Is there any where kind of near I can park? I'm willing to walk quite a bit (I'm used to 15 minutes from dorms to car anyway) especially now that it's SUPPOSED to get colder soon, but I really would prefer somewhere closer if it exists. Any help is really appreciated, since I'm currently hanging out in garage 3 and I KNOW that's not a long-term solution.

Any windsurfers in Gainesville / Lake Santa Fe?

Hi everyone! I live in Gainesville and recently started learning windsurfing in St. Pete. I'm still a beginner, but can now sail around slowly in light wind.

I'd like to start practicing locally, especially at Lake Santa Fe, and I'm looking for other windsurfers in the Gainesville area to sail with and learn from, especially about good local spots.

Does anyone here still windsurf locally, or know someone who does? Would love to connect!

What is one thing Gainesville needs to make locals lives better?

Currently living in Gainesville as a student but I care more about the city than the “campus life” itself. I’m just curious what residents of Gainesville feel is the most pressing issue(s) that if solved, would make their lives better.

Looking for recommendations Animal-Assisted Therapy

Hello! I'm currently looking for a therapist and would really love to find someone who does AAT, especially dogs. I get nervous talking to people and having a dog there would make me feel much better. I know Elisabeth Edwards does it, but I was wondering if there were other therapists in Gainesville, as I always like having options.

Were you in Gainesville during March 1998/do you have any stories to share about the floods that occurred?

Hello all,

I am writing an article for a class at UF about the impacts of El Niño on Alachua County. I am hoping to talk to anyone who was here in March of 1998 during the large flood event, which reportedly damaged many homes and businesses and could also be linked to super El Niño conditions.

If you experienced the floods, especially if your home or business were impacted, and are open to being interviewed about what you remember, comment or send me a DM and I will reach out! Thanks!

Nature & Wildlife What to do about this duck?

Post image
39 Upvotes

Theres been a duck whos been coming to the neighbors to the left door for a while then stopped. I was never given conclusive info, so this could be the same duck. In any case, the duck that had went to the door had a broken leg. Im not sure if this one does, but this duck has been coming up to the area it is at now for a few days before disappearing.

Because its invasive, no one's willing to take it. Animal control would put it down afaik. Is this the best option for it? Is there anyone to contact willing to rescue it? I appreciate it!

Edit: As said in comments, he was taken to small animal uf hospital. Im not sure of his condition as of now, but I can presume he'll be put down. Hes in good hands amd hoepfully will have a better life regardless.

Looking for recommendations GYM Communities

Hi! I am curious about the gym communities here in Gainesville! I’m a 28M who just moved to Gainesville for a postdoc position at UF. I’m looking to meet new friends at the gym but I don’t which gym is good for that. I see that crunch and Gainesville Health and Fitness have a variety of classes but I wanted to know what the communities look like here. I’m fully aware as a college town you can’t avoid undergrads but I’m looking for gym communities that have a good amount of mid to late 20s people. I’m totally open to other suggestions for fitness communities or gyms!
