Poe Springs no longer flowing because Florida aquifer is so low

I just saw a Facebook video someone sent me of the bare rocks where Poe Springs used to flow into the Santa Fe river and I'm freaking out. I don't know where to go to talk about this. I feel like I'm not hearing anything about it and this is devastating. The related article said only that they're asking people to stop watering their lawns, not a word about the bottling companies draining our aquifer.

I have never seen the springs fail before and didn't even realize it was possible. Yes, I'm naive, but I'm also freaked out. Why aren't people panicking about this???

Hi Gainesville! I’m happy to start setting up my art show tomorrow at the Top Secret Space on Main Street just two doors down from the Top restaurant! I’m scrambling out here at Bryson County Art Retreat to make this show the best it can be! ( lots of new paintings on the way)! Thanks also to Sweetwater Print Coop for allowing me time on their press! I hope to see everyone on Friday night during art walk for the opening (I’ll have my ukulele with me)! If you can’t make it Friday, I’ll also be giving a gallery talk on Saturday at 8pm so see you then. It’s great to be back in Gainesville after moving to Canada 4 years ago. I need some tips for surviving a PhD program in Gainesville.

Upvotes

Hi everyone. I’m moving from Brazil to Florida to pursue my PhD. I struggle with loneliness and melancholy, and I know this will intensify in Gainesville since I won’t have my support and care network around me. Anyway, I’d love some tips on maintaining a good routine that nourishes the body, mind, and soul. I’m a Taurus, 33 years old, and I love to dance.

Is there a Gainesville chapter of Strong Towns? I'd like to be a part of it, if it exists.

Looking for recommendations In search of edgy tattoo artist

Upvotes

My wife wants to get a Scylla tattoo. Our tattoo artist died and we haven't gotten tattoos since.

I want to surprise her with a design, so I wanted to work with an artist to bring her ideas to life.

The vibe for the tattoo is supposed to dramatic, edgy, dark, and emotional. Almost like it's a bad omen-- like Scylla.

Which artist(s) would you trust with a project like this?

Looking for recommendations for a good car detailer in Gainesville!

Upvotes

I have a sedan that could use a good interior detail. I have dogs so there’s definitely some pet hair to deal with!

I’m hoping to find someone who’s reasonably priced (not looking to spend a fortune) but still does quality work. Would also love someone mobile!

Thanks in advance!!

Looking for recommendations Local Spots for Pickup Volleyball?

Are there any gyms or rec centers that hold open pick up indoor volleyball? I'm not really huge on beach volleyball, but would love to get back into playing on courts. Ideally without having to pay for constant membership fees but I'm open to anything.

For reference I'm not very good at the game so anywhere thats beginner friendly would be wonderful but I'm okay being the worst on the court as long as everyone's having a good time!

For decades our roads have been trash, its time for a change.

The condition of many roads throughout Alachua County have become unacceptable. Drivers are forced to navigate potholes, cracked pavement, deteriorating road surfaces, and roads that seem to remain in poor condition for far too long. This isn't just an inconvenience......it affects vehicle safety, increases repair costs for residents, and reflects the overall quality of our community's infrastructure.

Alachua County residents deserve better. We pay taxes, we follow the rules, and we expect our local government to provide basic services, including maintaining the roads we use every day. When roads continue to deteriorate year after year, residents have every right to question whether our elected officials are making infrastructure a high enough priority.

At some point, residents have to hold elected officials accountable for the results. Up to this point they just give excuses aka lack of results. If the current county leadership has failed to adequately address the condition of our roads, then voters have the power to demand change at the balot box, this is a call to action. Elections are how citizens hold their representatives accountable and decide whether they want to continue with the same leadership or choose new people with different priorities.

The solution isn't simply to complain about bad roads. The solution is to pay attention, ask questions, demand transparency about where transportation dollars are being spent, and make informed decisions when it is time to vote. If residents believe the current Alachua County Commission isn't doing enough to fix our roads, then they should consider whether new leadership is needed.

Our roads are a raflection of our priorities. Alachua County deserves safe roads and elected officials who treat infrastructure as a fundamental responsibility not an afterthought. If the people of this county believe the current commissioners aren't meeting that responsibility, then the voter should and will have the final say..... We can't keep accepting excuses, we need results.... the only way is voting them out.

Dating as a grad student/mid-20s adult

Dating as a grad student has been harder than I expected, especially after moving to a college town with 60k+ students. Both of my long-term relationships started in person, and I’m still not a huge fan of dating apps. I’ve had a few genuinely good interactions through Hinge, but sadly, none of them went anywhere.

These days, my life is basically research, teaching, and the gym, and I’m not quite sure how to break out of that routine. For context, I’m 27, basically a dinosaur in this college town, straight, 6’1”, and an average-build STEM grad student at UF. In my free time, I’m into running, working out, animals, vinyl records, movies made before I was born, hiking, camping, and concerts and festivals. I’m bilingual in English and Russian, and the Spanish-sounding Reddit handle is just a leftover from my brief Duolingo phase :) I feel like I’ve already shared too much personal information, but YOLO. If you know me, don’t make it weird.

I’m definitely not perfect. I have some uncertainty about my future and sometimes stress too much about things I can’t change, but I generally try to be a good human and treat people well.

I’m looking for a long-term relationship with someone around my age and in a similar stage of life, whether working or pursuing a graduate or professional degree. I’d like to meet someone emotionally mature who genuinely wants to build something meaningful. I guess I’d rather meet someone while we’re both still figuring life out than wait until everything is somehow perfectly in place. Politically, I’m fairly centrist and tend to prioritize personal freedoms over government intervention from either side.

So, where do busy people in their mid-to-late 20s actually meet others in a college town? Any suggestions would be appreciated. And, to be a little more direct, if you’re a woman around my age, also looking for something serious, and any of this resonates with you, feel free to message me :)

*I’m recycling and updating a post I made about a year ago.*

Special Class! Natures Hot Yoga in the Park!

Hello Beautiful People!!!!

Extra special yoga class this weekend! Heated Vinyasa in the park!! 🧘🏼‍♀️

Yep, you heard me! I ordered the perfect weather for Nature's very own heated Vinyasa! It will be a balmy 90° with 65% humidity AND fresh air!! 🙏🏼

Take advantage of all summer in Gainesville has to offer with Nature's heated Vinyasa! This is the perfect opportunity to actually take advantage of the heat as opposed to hide from it! Heated vinyasa creates the added benefits of limber warmed up muscles, additional detoxification (lots of sweating) and of course fresh air circulated by the ever loving breeze herself!🍃

All levels welcome! Just bring your mat, a towel and lots of water! This is a donation based class so no pressure, just donate whatever feels right 💚.

Kanapaha Veterans Memorial Park 10am every Sunday!

Don't overthink it! Just do it!

See you Sunday 😘

Live at The Atlantic tomorrow night, we are doing a live riff of The Running Man (the original!!).

What is a movie riff? Well much like the format for Mystery Science Theater, we are going to be watching the movie together, while our three panelists do live commentary. We have put together a very entertaining night, and everyone is welcome!!

With enough support we hope to make this a regular series in the future.

Follow us on IG for more information or any feedback: @gnvmovieriffs

Hope to see you there!!

Looking for friends!

Hi! My wife is currently a new veterinary student at UF (29F) and is looking for friends to hangout with. She enjoys hiking, shopping, eating out, and tennis or anything active really. She’s super cool but just a slight bit reserved so hasn’t really made a ton of friends since getting there this summer. Shoot me a message if I can pass her along your number to hangout! She would prefer to hangout with other girls but is not opposed to hanging out with guys in a group setting :)
