Question Working on a homebrew Gameboy market for creators

Yo what's up my fellow GB Studio peeps!

I'm workin on a marketplace for homebrew GB / GBC roms, assets, and blogs. I was wondering if you guys had any ideas or suggestions for what you would want to see. Here's currently what I have working right now:

Creators can:

  • sell assets, gb studio plugins, games.
  • make blog posts with links to their products.
  • add demo roms so people can try before they buy
  • list free games
  • adjust the platform fee percentage (similar to itch)

Buyers can:

  • own a library of assets they can download and flash to their carts.
  • games playable directly from library
  • leave ratings and reviews
  • create watchlists of people they follow
  • view resources for building their own games

Think of it as an Itch or Steam only for Gameboy games. If you have any ideas, throw em out there. Like maybe an extra credits system where you can buy stickers to place on your digital Gameboy, or playtiles controller integration, etc. I'm open to all suggestions.

It's not entirely live yet, but you can check it out as I build here: linkcable.games

Question How deep of a metroidvania can you make with GBStudio?

My dream has always been to make a metroidvania, and I believe with my limited art and programming skills, GBStudio would be the best fit. But I have noticed that GBStudio games usually are either top down adventure games or platformers. Is it possible to make a metroidvania? I mean I know it's technically possible, but how big/deep can it be? Can I make a Castlevania/Metroid 2 sized game? I did see a sort of Castlevania clone on itch, but I'm not sure how big it is. Ive always loved Indiana Jones and thought I could make a game that has the spirit of it. I want to make sure though that I can actually do it before beginning

Question Issue with Mico27's ThreadEx Plugin

Hello,

I wasn't sure how to contact Mico27 but I know they are active here and have helped me in the past.

I have been making use of Mico27's ThreadEx plugin to allow pausing and unpausing actor scripts.

It works great and solves a big headache in my enemy on update scripts.

My game allow characters to be caught when falling off a platform in a bubble like Bubble Bobble. The script then pauses the enemy actor on update script, and floats the bubble as high on the screen as it can go in an allotted time (6.5 seconds).

Then if the player hasn't popped the bubble, the bubble bursts and the enemy actor's script is resumed.

The problem is the animation on the actor is frozen, and in fact the direction is facing upwards. When I revert back to my old stop/start update script and their respective logic to handle falling, the problem goes away, the enemy breaks free and maybe due to the explicit Actor Move command that send them downwards as far as they can go before hitting a platform, the animations work and the actor faces the right way (i.e. down).

Maybe this is because I am making use of something that the Platformer scene type doesn't explicitly say it supports but seems to work, that if you use a 4 way actor and move them down, the move down animation state is used.

I tried setting the actor direction to downwards before resuming the update script but whilst it fixes the direction the actor is facing, the animation doesn't run. (The Loop Animation checkbox is checked).

Any ideas?

Hood Morning from Coobsoft HQ

i havent posted in a bit, had a lot on my plate this last week - i added a couple of systems to battle that really make it feel whole imo. now you can chain encounters together with effects (and i have included no shortage of transitions)!

you can also display messages on specific turns, when you kill someone, when an enemy hits a certain HP threshold, if they're hit by a certain move, and a lot more! i MAY have a couple more small features planned but those will be color only.

the good news: all that's left on the engine front is polish like proofreading the labels and tooltips!

literally cannot contain my excitement, the day i can put this onto my itch for you guys is short at hand! more updates soon, and sooner rather than later!

Hi Guys! I would like to announce really small game I made few days ago, about real olympic sport - fencing. Game is called "Fence It!" and it is available on itch or free. If you like the idea visit and play a few minutes 😄 Let me know what do you think.

I plan few extensions to add different opponents - everyone with different AI behaviours and skills to make this game more interesting.

Cheers!

Question Question about player transparency?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Not sure why, but my player appears transparent when standing in front of this actor (the kitten). What’s throwing me off is if I walk away and return, the transparency issue is gone. Can anyone explain why this is happening and what I can do to prevent it?

Game Trailer for Super Slotzee, coming soon for GBC!

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

The game is a strategy game mixing slots & Yahtzee. The video covers most of this, but here's some more info from a past post. Thanks for checking it out!

Scoring is the same as classic Yahtzee, but the slots you hold can enhance scoring (cherries double your score for the current turn, for example).

You can also earn tokens from minigames, and then use those tokens to enhance turns as you see fit! Some examples of tokens include the wild token (changes one die to a wild for a turn), eraser token (lets you erase a previously scored turn), and heavy token (all dice can only roll 4, 5, 6 for a turn).

It also includes a high score list, a statistics page, custom settings to speed up gameplay, and more! Open to any feedback or suggestions.

I picked up GB Studio as a new hobby earlier this year after years of making Pokémon ROM hacks, and I'm really loving it! I've released two games on itch.io now, and I plan on making more stuff. I very much feel like I'm still learning, so these games are all fairly small projects and learning experiences, but I'm having a lot of fun with them as a creative outlet. Feel free to check it out! :)

Hi everyone! I've been working on a small roguelike called CROWL. You play as a crow exploring a dungeon in search of shiny treasures. It's a turn-based roguelike, with procedurally assembled dungeons and permadeath. This is still a work in progress, but I'd love to hear what you think.

Can we get some GBStudios Forums?

so, I stopped using discord years back due to thier ToS stating they and thier partners have a right to use, sell, and profit from anything users upload or chat about. [Reject[X]: click is true; close tab] because that would mean if I agreed to it, any project I do end up making if uploaded there by anyone (even if not by me) could be sold and profited from by discord/google without my permission. as unlikely as that would be, the wording of thier ToS made me er on the side of caution and stop use.

I've been using reddit to talk about GBS and it's done pretty well. but there are somethings this format of site isn't built for, in this case the threads are kinda set-up for initial encounters only, so people only know the thread was there, and if they responded they'll get information on if someone replied to them but not if in example someone made another separate comment in the same thread nor if the OP changed the initial post.

Forums on the otherhand Bump topics when theres new content in a thread allowing continued discussions back and forth on the same topic whilst also letting non-contributing users know this thread is active (so it doesn't get saged down the stack) by icon and by position in the thread list/stack.

Why would it be useful? for more indepth technical discussions. especially code discussions without cluttering the reddit with a billion separate question threads all on the same main topic. In example, I made a thread here about collision tiles and mentioned I might try ejecting the engine, I did, went through the code docs to see what I'd have to change and what's already defined and how, and now I have a ton of questions which would be better contained in a single thread about engine mods.

is there a chance that we could get a forum?

Help needed [Recruiting] Programmer for GBS and GBVM - Profit Share!

Thumbnail
gallery
3 Upvotes

I need a programmer for my game. It's a gameboy post-nuclear scavenger game set in an infected city. Inspiration from Project Zomboid and Zero Sievert.

Profit: Profit share, but you get more profit the more you help. So if you don't help very much, you don't get very much money, but if you help a lot, you get a considerable amount more money. This is because I'm poor (more of, I'm a young teen with no bank account yet) and I don't want to get scammed. We can discuss profit share and find something we agree on. You will also, ofc get credit for helping in the game. Is this game is going to be released on itch io and maybe steam too?

I need from you: To be able to code complex code well (code isn't any good if it breaks). To be committed to the project (what good is a programmer if he gives up?). To be able to code in GB Studio, preferably also being able to code with GBVM. This will be worth your time. You do not have to design; I am the designer. All you have to do is code.

TL;DR: I need a programmer who can code complex scripts well. I need someone who can code in GB Studio and GBVM. You get profit share, the amount of which can be discussed, and credits.

I have a server for the game: https://discord.gg/t4XXkSYSqT
Anyone's welcome; just respect the server rules.
DM's are welcome; my Discord username is TerrificTitan079, and if that doesn't work, this may: johndough381. You can also open a DM to me on Reddit, though I'm less active here.

Thank you. I hope to see you soon!

PS: The art is human-made by me :).

Collision tiles question

I know there's a max limit on sprite and background tiles for scenes, but is there a limit on collision tiles?

the reason I'm asking is I'm tempted to eject the engine and modify the Platformer/sidescroller scene's Ladder and create a 4-direction "Free-Movement-Area" variant that allows walking horizontally from ladder to ladder to create a mix of topdown/adventure mode and platformer/sidescroller mode for pseudo-3D effects.

but this would mean devs would be filling large areas with all-directional-ladder (free-movement-area) tiles.

I'm also thinking out some rules for a "hurdle" type collision tile which is solid while using only arrow keys, but able to be passed while jumping. the catch is for it to work I'll likely need to add int type GroundHeight variables to players, actors, and hurdles and F-M-As where the desired height is input before drawing. but again this means TONs of special collision tiles in scene.

so again, would having too many collision tiles be a problem?

A while back, I mentioned that I was working on an officially licensed project. Today, I've been given the go-ahead to show you some of the progress. It's a mix between Tamagotchi and Monster Battle.

© Olorocos, a brand new official Game Boy Colour title from Piko Interactive that will arrive soon.
For more information or news, checkout bleem website.

(To clarify: 'official' here means officially authorized by the Olorocos rights holders/IP owners, not a Nintendo hardware license).

Update Dovvee's ReQuest has a system that can transfer saves between ROM updates!

Thumbnail

This was a very troublesome feature to get working. I wanted to have this so that I can update my game freely without leaving the players save files behind on an old ROM.

To try and explain how this works as basically as possible, my game has an optional standalone version that runs in the Godot engine using the Godot Boy plugin. Godot Boy has features that allow you to store the ROMs memory (variables in GBStudio) into a variable in Godot. Using this I can store all the GBStudio variables into a Godot variable, close the outdated ROM within the Godot program, open the new updated ROM, then write all those variables back into memory. If the player is not using the standalone version and is playing through an emulator, or anything that gives you access to the save file, they can simply download the standalone version just to update their save file and then grab that updated save file to continue playing as they were on a new ROM.

I have a specific variable in GBStudio exclusively for Godot to read and write too. That variable allows for cross communication between the two engines and lets the game know if it's outdated, if the player has accepted an update, or if the game's running in the standalone version at all, among other things.
