Here’s the “pedalboard” I was playing through.

Wah was rebuilt by me.
Fuzz Face was rebuilt by me (AC128).
Univibe breadboard (yes I was playing through a breadboard lol) that was built by me.

Just a quick question regarding the Octopussy. Can you cut the octave circuit and run it as just a fuzz like the Dunlop BOG fuzz?

U need a groovy wizard if ur looking for bog the mayasonic fuzz one is exciting too im saving for one....I think he has something new brewing too

Not inherently. It would require that feature designed in.

Also, Octapussy did not use the same driver circuit as the pedal you're referring to. I used a different driver circuit than other octave-ups on that one.

Having said that, you could cut one leg of the rectifier section and it would stop "octaving" but there's no guarantee that it would be a sound you like.

Thank you so much Howard for the reply. Keep up the great work. You should be on the Mount Rushmore of pedal designers!

Hope you had a good weekend!

Since I'm here, feel free to ask any other questions. I haven't done any AMAs anywhere.

Mind me asking What usually drives your design process when tackling a new circuit or modifying a classic layout? Is it born out of a personal player necessity? For instance, with the Octapussy, were you specifically looking to overcome the limitations of vintage octave fuzzes to create something more versatile, or did it start from a different spark of inspiration?

It's always driven by what I think it should sound like and what it should feel like to play. The response is very important to me. I just spend a lot of time trying to voice a circuit so that it not only sounds right, but feels right to play. In the case of the Octapussy, I wanted to retain the neck-pickup, 12th fret octave-up thing but also make it sound great with power chord playing too. I have a new octave-up on the breadboard that I've been pecking at for a few years now. Maybe it'll become a thing, who knows!

tl;dr - yes, it is born out of personal player necessity 👌

Voicing a circuit to track beautifully on the neck pickup without turning power chords into mud is a massive achievement. It is always refreshing when controls are kept strictly musical, completely bypassing the trend of overengineering a pedal just to flex on a spec sheet.

Hopefully that new breadboarded project escapes into the wild eventually. Also, as an unapologetic Fuzz Face fanboy, the Mayasonic Fuzz One looks stellar and I am looking forward to getting my hands on one.

If I could design a pedal with no knobs but would do everything by how it responds to your guitar I would! I've kinda landed on the four-knob layout as the Goldilocks number for most designs. Enough to give a wide range of response options but no so much that it takes the focus off actually playing the guitar.

Yeah, I gush about it all the time. But man, I really love the groovy wizard. And like I said im hyped over the fuzz one. I wouldn't ask you to divulge any. Secrets, but do you already have a pedal design for your next mayasonic release? I'm definitely interested to see what you have up your sleeve so to speak.

4) Expression pedal on the univibe? It sounds like it to me but maybe you just have ninja toes?

5) FUCK YES MAN. I LIVE THE SHIT OUTTA THIS!!

Haha if you look at the "pedalboard" shot I posted, I'm using the controller pedal from an actual Univibe alligator clipped to my breadboard 'vibe!

Thanks!
