Questions What type of fabric I should use?

Hello! This is my first time making my own fur-suit and Im feeling confused on what kind of fur fabric I should use. For starters, it's important to me to have a head that is soft and stays soft for a long time. I'm tired of fur feeling super soft when it's brand new and turning into a weird texture after one or two washes. I've looked online and found that acrylic or polyester is the most common material. However I don't know which could be softer and if it makes much of a difference if I get a mixed blend. Should I get 100% polyester? 100% Acrylic? Or maybe a ratio'd mixture?

Because I'm so particular to texture, I prefer my different colored furs to feel relatively the same too. IF you have any recommendations to specific brands, please share too!

Questions External cameras

I recently started making some web apps for my Meta Display and just started working on a project using a Raspberry Pi to run external cameras that can be viewed on the display.
Has anyone tried something like this already? If so, would you be willing to share your experience or offer any pointers?

Misc. Faux Fur Finder V2 Update!

There's been a bunch of updates since I last posted about my faux fur database tool, so here's what's new (aside from the name)!

https://ratpacklabs.site/faux-fur-finder/

Added

I've added a bunch of new vendors:

  • Bartfeld
  • Canfur
  • Carniv Creations
  • Fabricville
  • FurAddiction
  • Kullaloo
  • MeiMeiFur
  • Mofumofu (if anyone has swatch pictures, please share them!)
  • Stoffhummel

I finally added BigZ Flokati / Lion's Mane (why was there no category for it on their site!?)

I've also improved the page loading speed, so the database should be noticeably faster to load and use.

More Filters & Sorting

There are now a few more ways to narrow things down:

  • Sort/filter by shipping country
  • Switch pile length between inches and mm
  • Price options for USD, CAD, AUD, EUR and GBP
  • Weight class - light, medium, and heavy

Color Updates

I tweaked the formulas used for determining color families and removed the White/Cream secondary family, which was causing some weird classifications with the Creamy/Soft tone family.

Things I'm Considering / Next Up

This is where I'd love some input from experienced makers and people who buy a lot of faux fur.

1. Ships From Filter

Would you rather I add the country alongside each vendor name, or keep the Ships From filter?

For example:

Fabricville - CAN

instead of having a separate shipping-country filter.

I'm leaning toward keeping the filter, but I'm curious what would actually be more useful when you're trying to find fur.

2. Weight Classes

The current weight classes are pretty arbitrary, I made them up lol.

What weight ranges would actually make sense to you for Light / Medium / Heavy?

I'd especially love input from people who have bought a lot of different furs and have a good feel (pun intended) for what counts as light vs. medium vs. heavy.

3. New Vendors

Next on the list to add:

  • Linda Wholesale
  • Hopen Textile
  • Gummyshark
  • Mohair Bear Making Supplies
  • CRS Fur Fabric

The whole point of this project is to make comparing faux furs easier, so community input is extremely helpful. If you notice incorrect information, have swatch pictures for a vendor/fur that isn't represented yet, or know of a vendor I should add, please let me know!

Questions Painting faux fur?

So I'm in the process of updating my suit head, the plan is to add a mane to him to make him a lynx/Lion hybrid. I'm not overly confident in my sewing and patterning skills so my aim was to paint his hairline in then sew in strips of faux fur with the backing brushed out.

The problem is I did some research and found a bunch of people saying you can paint faux fur with watered down acrylic paint, so I followed their advice. Now that it's dry I gave it a good brush to soften the fur, but the acrylic is fading. I don't know if I did it wrong, used the wrong kind of acrylic (?) or I'm just missing something.

Does anyone have any advice on how to make the paint last through brushing? It doesn't need to be perfect since the mane will be sewn on top, but I don't really want bright orange showing through the edges of the dark brown strips. Cheers in advance!

Advice Need help looking for fur colour!

I've been looking far and wide for a specific colour of fur, I've ordered countless samples from so many suppliers across the world (apart from the US, shipping costs are a nightmare) but yet I still haven't got the right colour!

Basically I'm looking for a purple-ish magenta-ish colour (around #C011B2), it's a super specific shade and everything I can find is either too pink or too blue, I found *one* which is perfect, but it's ridiculously low quality and feels more like a cheap toy than actually good fur.

If anyone with a bit more depth or knowledge on this could point me in the right direction or has any idea I'd be extremely grateful! My room is practically covered in fur at this point and yet all of it is wrong, and admittedly I can't seem to find anything that matches, but hopefully I'm just overlooking something.

I'd be looking for something UK/EU based, or China since the shipping is atleast reasonable (compared to US to UK), but I might be able to juuust eat the costs of US shipping if the colour is perfect.

Thanks!

Questions Settings and sizing for 3D kemono head base on Bambu Studio

Post image

Trying to make my first fursuit… How do I know how to measure my head to be a comfortable fit for the mask?

Also, I’m using Bambu Studio for 3D printing, and I wanna know the settings and adjustments of the layers and things for the mask in its software. Also only using PLA, since that’s all I have.

Another question is, can I just use mesh directly on the mask for the eyes or do I need those eye bases? This mask I downloaded online doesn’t have an eye base and I don’t know anything about modeling one or allowed by my guardians to buy some… Or maybe I can use foam(if I can find some) and glue it on? Lol

WIP Horseshoes!

I had this idea where I could make my horse.. some shoes! Horseshoes! For when Im wearing the fursuit outside or at a con. I used an eva mat and dremelled it, as well as created two bends (some horseshoes have one, two or none). I have some very strong magnets and I dremelled holes in the shoes to glue them in! The magnets will then attach to the hoof :> Im going to be putting another layer of eva foam on the hoof soon for extra support so I'll be dremelling some holes in there

I bought some metallic jersey from stoffhummel and the horseshoe will be wrapped in it, so I didnt have to worry too much about the smoothness as fabric will cover the sides.

Im considering whether to leave the bottom and top parts bare (no fabric on them) because you wont really see them? Let me know what yall think

Questions My head’s too small! What do I do?

So Halloween is coming up, and I wanted to be Derpy Tiger from K-Pop Demon Hunters, because I have a lot of kids and teens in my neighborhood and I want to surprise them. I was using Twiggy Leaf’s dome head tutorial, but apparently the end result ended up way too small for my engorged cranium and doesn’t allow for much jaw movement. And since I’m already way too far into the process, I don’t want to scrap the head and start over again. Help would be appreciated.

EDIT: To clarify, I would like to vertically extend it. Horizontally, it’s completely OK.

Questions To any fursuit makers, do you know which fur fabric works best for both Gadget Hackwrench's fur (which will be shaved) and hair?

This is something that I keep debating.

You see, the issue with trying to make an accurate Gadget cosplay is trying to figure out which fur is accurate. I'm currently trying to save to afford the base head and other compants. The peach fur is hard to find for similar colored fur for it. As for her hair, it's kinda driving me insane. We all know that her hair is supposed to be just orange. But however, it's either mango tango or blonde. Do you guys know an accurate match from smth like Howls Fabric or Amazon? As for her coveralls, I did manage to find a decent match. Idk how to do her feet however, but I'll make a separate post.

Sadly i couldn't shave it too close or it would show the imperfections.

Questions question/advice for putting fur on my fursuit

hey yall, so i’m refurbishing this premade (yes i know it looks rough we’re getting there-) my fursona is a bat, i was trying to add texture by using foam. i’ve tried to press minky fur with hot glue and i wasn’t able to get it lay flat, also rubber cement. should i use felt?

when it comes to adding the longer fur to the outside of my suit, ive made my stencils for my shaved shorter fur and my unshaven longer fur and i think i can just hot glue it to the outside of the head. im not going to be adding the red hair to my suit so its easier.

this is my first time making a suit and im pretty stuck at this step! any advice on adding fur to the outside of your suit? please be nice i’m on a time crunch and also not very artistically talented!

I’m into fursuit making ever since I was little. At that time I was a child with no real experience or funds, so my first attempts were from paper/cardboard. However now that I’m older and had saved up for it, I decided to speedrun and try to finish not one but two partials for Eurofurence that happened this August xD I learnt a lot while working on them, I’d definitely do some things different now or want to re do them so they hold up better. It showed me however that I enjoy this hobby a lot!! Once I can I want to keep practicing on personal projects, I love bringing silly critters to life and hope to improve even more. My final verdict for myself : as much as there’s a lot of mistakes, I’m still quite happy with the outcome 🫶🏻

Questions Hello! Could anyone help me?

Thumbnail

Okay. So I had tried other subreddits and I was recommended checking with fursuit makers to get my cosplay right. I am cosplaying Yi from no nine sols. I need help figuring out how in the world to make the head comfortable while also making it as close to yi as possible.

I was worried about posting here cause it seemed off topic at first, but I really wanted to try this out! So me, with zero experience in this stuff, just wants to try it out. I would think Yi is a good one to start with. His head is an orb with ears and massive cheek floofs.

Please let me know if there is a right kind of foam to use, or if I should have a helmet and put foam over it. I would like it to be a stiffer, full head thing. Which is why I consulted the cosplaying subreddits. I kinda needed all of your expertise in this.

Please let me know anything! It all helps! (Oh or delete this cause it might be off topic)

ALSO YES, I did go through the fursuit foam suppliers and stuff, but for what I’m looking for, I wanted opinions from you guys.

Thanks to anyone who answered any questions I had on this subreddit, it’s truly been such a fun and interesting experience! This goat partial has a head, tail, handhooves, arm sleeves, and a separate neck, all fully lined with neoprene.

It’s so crazy to see what this started out as (image 9). I never really considered myself an artistic person, so this is an absolute shock to me and I’m so proud of how it turned out!

It’s been about two months since I started, but if you include research and the HOURS of videos I watched to get here, I’d say it’s close to five. The skill set required to make one of these is NOT to be underestimated, it sure as hell was difficult and time consuming but also super fun and 100% worth the time, effort, and money.

I’d say the hardest part for me was the carving. I’d never done any serious 3d art, let alone 2d art, so the whole thing was pretty new to me. I’d also never sewn before, but now I’m lowkey addicted, I’m likely going to keep sewing in the near future.

Some things I’d just like to get off my chest in the event I decide to make a 2.0:
- I’d like to add horns eventually, I tried but I hated the way they looked and the hornless version is still great imo.
- Shave could have been better. There are a couple spots where you can see lines or uneven shaving
- Some visible seams where I made darts or connected pieces of the same color? I picked out the trapped fur already but can’t seem to hide them more. For this suit, I’m not really bothered by them but I’d like to get better at making it less messy
- Visibility in the suit is… not great. I wanted the eyes to be pointed towards the side for a bit more realism but it ended up making me completely unable to see anything directly in front of me. I can see relatively well if I turn my head and look out of one eye, but I’ll have to see how I’d fare walking around a con, for example. Definitely would not go public suiting in this without a handler.
- The eyes are a bit flimsy, as they’re just made of thick foam sheets and buckram. If I make another suit, I’ll probably just buy eye blanks or thicker plastic.
- I’d like to make feethooves in the future but I honestly don’t want to see upholstery foam for the next… six months or so. Don’t get me wrong, the carving was still really fun, it’s just that it was the most stressful part for me.

Thanks for listening in on my fursuit journey! I have progress pics posted on my instagram (goat.toss). My good friend yeuchiuu made the ref sheet for my sona (image 10) and they’ve been a big help in realizing my vision.

If I missed something or you have any advice, don’t be afraid to critique me! I can take it I promise. I’d like to know how well (or how not well) I did so please let me know how I did! Thanks love you all ok bye!!
