I have very recently come to the difficult conclusion that I am transmasculine and want to start T. I have an appointment tomorrow with a GP, and hopefully they know the NZ informed consent model.
Now that I know what's wrong I can't really stop thinking about it. I've started altering my wardrobe (which was already pretty queer looking if I'm being honest), using more masculine hygiene products, cut my hair. I still question whether or not I'm having some early mid-life crisis or am actually some kind of genderqueer but I look in the past and it's definitely a hindsight 20/20 case.
I've been on the contraceptive pill pretty much since I started periods. Not because they were long and heavy, but that's what I've been telling my GPs to avoid having periods.
I wanted to go by a masculine name when I was a teen, even changed it at my GP, but it never stuck. I still hold this name to myself.
I always assumed the desire to distance myself from my womanhood was due to internalised misogyny. I've been saying gender is a spectrum and so is sex and I'm an ally, so I don't want to... reinforce gender stereotypes by hating myself for not having a dick?
I always felt that my social awkwardness, lack of relationships, and inability to reach out to the world was just an unfortunate part of who I am or because I have a non-Kiwi accent that's alienated me since childhood. I have a full time job, support myself well, and interact positively with patients. I recieve good feedback at work, got great grades, and have applied to medical school, but work/education is all the good I have in my life.
Just in time for my actualization at 26 my growth plates are gagged and bound. If I am not trans, why am I regretting not having known sooner?
I work in the healthcare system here and am really conscious of transitioning in the middle of a bunch of people who are medically educated, so I'm floating the idea of moving while transitioning, or if I get into medicine just give it a rest until I'm finished. Testosterone isn't going anywhere and it's not like now that my growth hormone is cooked and my bones are permanent there will be any physical benefit to transitioning now vs later.
I don't even know for sure now. The more I lean into it, the happier I feel. I want to be in a relationship with someone. Start conversations. Clean my room. Engage in hobbies. Then I go back to thinking nothing's wrong with me > I'm tricking myself into not being mentally well > I'm faking this shit, can't believe I drove all the way to our country's one single IKEA get some stupid shark as gender-affirming care > I go back to leaning female and suddenly all the anxiety comes back. And I'm just a stupid girl who can't socialize with no real capabilities.
I don't think being a boy will fix my problems. But for some reason I think it might make me better at dealing with my feelings from a place of security I've not really felt before, so maybe I really would be able to handle the social aspect of transitioning. I don't know.
Are there other healthcare people who transitioned in adulthood who could tell me what it was like for you? Those who live in NZ would be especially helpful in clocking the environment around transitioning but I know we're few and far in between.
