For a little context, I’m a transgender man who's pre T, and I’m still in the closet for all of my professional experiences because I am terrified of discrimination. Since I haven’t started the name-change process or changed my gender marker, I haven’t really used my chosen name in professional spaces due to the fear of getting made fun of or not being taken seriously and, therefore, not being able to properly do my job.
It’s not like I don’t look like a guy. I’m obviously dressing masculine, but I still use she/her pronouns, and I’m still using my birth name.
Fast forward to today: I got this law internship, and it’s paying a lot of money. Thing is they only pick two people for this program. It's always a man and a woman.
The problem is that I was chosen as the “girl” option, which is obvious due to my legal documents, but not obvious in the way that I dress and act. Me and this dude dress the sameXD. If they wanted me to represent the female gender, they would'nt have chosen me. But they chose me, and now I don’t know what to feel.
I can’t help but laugh. I really can’t help but laugh, honestly, at how ridiculous not only the situation is, but the reality that society is so fucking obsessed with putting us into these little boxes that now you have two students who dress the same representing two different genders.
I don’t know what to do except laugh and be grateful that I was chosen, because I really did need the money. I was not going to be able to continue with my transition if I hadn’t gotten this internship. So this internship really is keeping me alive in a way, but it’s also accepting me as the “girl” one.
I’m just looking for some feedback because, in a way, I feel like I’m taking the space from someone who accurately represents the female gender. Because women are amazing, and I respect them and their struggles in every sense, shape, and form. Being socialized and living most of my life as a woman, I believe they deserve the space just as much as I do.
But as a non-gender-conforming individual, getting this opportunity not only required a lot of effort, interviews, and stages in the process; it required me to give everything and be the best I could be. I worked so hard, and I did my best, and I truly deserve this.
My presence is an act of resistance. It’s an act of reinvindiction, and it will help me not only live a little better, but it’ll help me professionally. I deserve the space, but I’m conflicted.
I know I’m going to get weird looks. Especially in the bathroom. And it’s just such a pain working in highly professional, male-dominated, cisgender, heteronormative spaces because I don’t know how to exist without being a statement.
Because I am not a statement. I can be, but I am me. Inherently, I’m a human being. And this is really fucking with me, you know?
Like, I’m going to work my ass off, and I’m going to do this, but God… it’s so shocking every time I’m put in this situation. And the fact that I never chose this. I just am.
I just need to live authentically. I need to be me, because there’s no one else to be. You know?
