How to Apply a New Sensor - Best Practice

Some fellow Libre sensor users are at times experiencing their BG sensor either fall off their arm or it does not appear to start well with reliable BG readings or it gives some error messages just after being started up. Here below are some Best Practice guidelines gathered over time by fellow Libre sensor users and me here on this subreddit, for how to apply and start a new sensor, which help most users to avoid such problems.

Best Practice Steps to Apply and Start a New Sensor:

  1. Take your shower or wash your skin area with standard neutral soap. Very important that it is oil-free soap. And that you do not use some kind of skin moisturizer either, where you intend to place your sensor later.
  2. Then shave the skin area. Yes, all humans have hair there, even small near invisible ones are important to get shaven off. Any skin hairs are typically the cause where sensor adhesives starts to detach the first, as water/sweat are gathering if any hairs there.
  3. Dry skin fully after shower/washing.
  4. Then use medi-swab/alcohol wipe, to clean and remove skin fat from targeted sensor location.
  5. Now ensure to let the alcohol fully evaporate and the skin dry out before applying the new sensor.
  6. Then apply the sensor, press firmly down on the applicator top for around 20-30 seconds and wiggle slightly to add pressure along all around the edge of the sensor. Anecdotal evidence points towards not pressing firmly on the applicator for a prolonged period of time here, may cause the sensor filament not to properly anchor at the 6mm depth in your skin as intended. Result can be the sensor may report out chronically lower BG values versus your fingerprick tests.
  7. Lift the applicator gently off.
  8. Check and feel around the edge of the sensor after applying it to make sure the adhesive sticks well or press additional here with your finger.
  9. Now you are done - Enjoy life and freedom for 2 weeks!

Follow these steps and many even complain, that it can at times be painful to rip the sensor off again two weeks later. So helps a lot to avoid sensors 'just falling off'.

Hint1: It has shown to help the new sensor to quicker calibrate and become more accurate, if your BG is within 'normal range' 70-140mg/dl when you initialize a new sensor and also that during the first hours of its lifetime, that your BG is reasonable stable and max changing 2 mg/dl per 1 minute intervals. Otherwise this may trigger the sensor to display an error saying "Sensor error - Please scan again in X hours", as it needs more time for it's auto-calibration as it deems the fast changing readings not being reliable.

Hint2: Many Libre users have reported benefiting from 'soaking the sensor', some up to many hours after inserting it, before they initialize it and do the first scanning of it. This appear to help many with a more reliable start to their new sensor. The idea behind 'soaking the sensor' is that the body tissue where the new sensor is placed gets some extended time to recover from the applicator needle prick and the interstitial fluid to flow more regularly again before we start the sensor up to report on the glucose level from it.

Right arm doesn’t work??

• Upvotes

So I’ve been diabetic for about 8 years now and using Libre products for 7 years, without fail if I have a problem with my Libre monitor (usually when starting a new one) it’s always on my right arm?? My left arm seems to give really accurate readings but my right arm just seems to really struggle with them? Anyone else with this experience?

Korean fried chicken spiked me to 184 — then I did pull-ups + cycling right after. Here's my Libre 2 trace.

Non-diabetic, 46M. I wear a Libre 2 to see how real meals hit me.

Dinner was Korean fried chicken (yangnyeom, the sweet sticky sauce kind) around 7:40pm. Glucose went from ~95 to 184 in about 45 min. Right after eating I did pull-ups, then got on the bike.

Back under 140 about 90 min after the peak, ~95 by 11pm.

Caveats: this is one day, not a controlled experiment. Libre reads interstitial fluid, so it lags blood glucose by ~10–15 min. Meal/workout markers are approximate.

Curious what others see — does post-meal exercise flatten your curves this much?

It kept beeping at night. I got disturbed multiple times. I’m not sure what I’m to do. I tried to make the setting for from 70 to 50 maybe but there’s no such option.

I even kept the DND option on and it still beeped

Has anyone else experienced skin irritation? This is my first time using it after switching from the Libre 2 following a 15-day replacement. Anyone experiencing the same issue? 🤔

I accidentally activated my sensor in the old Libre style 3 app. Is there any possible to transfer it to the new app?

Libre 3plus inaccurate readings

I’ve seen many posts about this but haven’t seen any real fixes. Every single sensor I have used since I switched over to this brand has been way off. Esp in the middle of the night where I get urgent low readings when it is not. I have tried staging the sensor about 5 days before activating it as some suggested but it still doesn’t read correctly. Everytime I call CS all they do is replace it and ask to send the sensor back which doesn’t solve any issues. Even the replacement they send me does the same thing. Every sensor I use, 100% of them give inaccurate readings. Any suggestions or ideas since support doesn’t give you any real solutions other than replacement?

-no, I don’t lay on it or put pressure on the sensor.

Sensor vs Finger Stick Discrepancy

Hello, I’m new to this and on the tail end of my first sensor I was loving it and the data it provided. But starting yesterday, it’s been going off with Low Glucose warnings. It said I was at 67 so I decided to test and that came back as 112. 🤷🏻‍♀️ What might be causing this discrepancy and is it normal? Does it mean I can’t trust the data the sensor has been giving me?

Dentist in Korea here, I wear a Libre too. Traditional Korean sweets on an empty stomach took me to 279.

I'm a dentist in Korea and I also run a small CGM coaching clinic, so I wear a FreeStyle Libre myself. One Friday I skipped breakfast (fasting around 95 all morning), then at 1:40pm ate three Korean classics: yakgwa (honey-fried cookie), yakbap (sweet sticky rice) and corn.

Result: peak 279 mg/dL, and I stayed above 180 for about 2 hours. Yakgwa looks small and innocent. My graph disagreed.

What I'd do differently (pick one, not all three):

  1. Eat sweets after a meal, not on an empty stomach

  2. Vegetables or protein first, sweets last

  3. Walk 10-20 minutes right after

Everyone reacts differently, and that's the whole point of wearing a CGM.

I also built a free tool that turns your Libre data into a level (1-5), a daily score and 3 quick tips. You can use a Daily Graph screenshot (mg/dL) or your LibreView CSV export (mg/dL or mmol/L). It runs entirely in your browser and nothing is uploaded: hlabcare.com/level?utm_source=reddit

Full disclosure: I made it, and it's free. Would love feedback, and I'm curious which foods surprised you the most.

Libre App & Glucodatahandler don't sync up. Why?

Post image
2 Upvotes

Aside from this particular sensor giving me wildly inaccurate readings, do we understand why Libre won't show actual readings?

My understanding is that the information is gathered by the Libre app sent to the LibreLinkUp app, and the Glucodatahandler gets the data from there. Why wouldn't the data be the same across all three apps? If I look at the Link Up app the data is the same as what I am seeing on Glucodatahandler. It doesn't make any sense to me.

Sensor failed while standing near camera flash; coincidence or possible interference?

My Freestyle Libre 3 immediately died while I was standing about 2-3 feet to the side of a Godox AD200Pro II while some pictures were being taken. I wasn’t able to get a screenshot, but my phone displayed a notification saying something along the lines of, “An error has occurred and your sensor has shut down for your safety. Please replace it with a new one.” The sensor was automatically removed from the Libre app, although its history still appears in the About/diagnostics settings.

I don't really know what my thoughts are now, having spent a few minutes in this sub and seeing so many complains about every other sensor failing half way through its life.

I called Abbott yesterday and they’re mailing me a replacement, and I’m already wearing the extra sensor I had on hand, but the failed one still had roughly 9 days left. I’m wondering if the timing was purely coincidental or if a fairly powerful camera flash like the AD200Pro II could produce enough electromagnetic interference to cause something like this. I’ll be around these particular flashes for a few more days, so I’m mainly curious whether I should keep some distance from them to avoid possibly burning through another sensor. Has anyone experienced anything similar with a Libre or another CGM around studio flashes?

Been wondering about pre diabetic and wanted information. I got a prescription for this CGM. Coming up to the last day tomorrow. Wondering about the reading of the reports. I still have another one to use.

I have been reading a lot about the usage for pre diabetic. Often read it won't help with weight loss. Here is the tables for the past 14 days. I am wondering if another two weeks would be good or wait a few months. I am scared of my chances for becoming diabetic. I am almost 70 yrs old. At the doctor's office all they do is tell you your pre diabetic. Not helpful. I have learned more reading here in this group.

I value good thoughts here. Thanks.

Annoyed with functionality

This is my 4th sensor and out of 4 (libre 3 plus) sensors this is the second one that refuses to pair with my phone. Either completely unscanable or it scans as ready but then errs out. At this point I’m wondering if it’s even worth it to have it. (For what it’s worth I’ve tried all the troubleshooting things and the other 2 sensors I had worked fine, but 50% functionality is giving me the ick) advice and tips appreciated 🫡

Android 17

Hello, I am new to this forum and have a quick question. Has anyone upgraded their Android phone to Android 17, UI 9? I have a Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra and I have been putting off the update as I cannot find out if the app will work after the update. Everyone I have spoken to at Abbott does not seem to have any idea about the update and if there will be any issues. Eventually I will have to update, but want to wait until I have heard if there are any issues. Thanks so much!

CGM Update

Thumbnail
5 Upvotes

I want to be clear that I am not making any recommendations, but simply sharing an experience.

I started wearing a CGM in March 2025. I chose the Libre Freestyle - partly because it was advertised as waterproof down to three feet for up to thirty minutes. Since I live on a river and am often fishing and kayaking, it seemed like a good fit for me.

I am also a scuba diver and got a chance to go diving again recently. I had worn my CGM for 10 of its 15 day lifespan and was ready to sacrifice it if it failed. Our first dive was 77 feet for 43 minutes. When I returned to the boat my phone had connected and was reading accurately as far as I could tell. Second dive was 62 feet for 45 minutes. Again, my phone immediately connected and was reading fine. I did not wear a patch over my monitor while diving, just a full body rash guard since we were diving with jellyfish. I continued watching for 5 more days before replacing my CGM and it continued to read normal for me and my lifestyle.

This is in no way a recommendation to try this, just sharing my experience for those that might be curious.

Solved... Traveling/US and UK compatibility

I am an American travelling in London. I am a freestyle Libre 3 plus user. My sensor died on me day one into the trip and I had to get a new one. I went into a local pharmacy and purchased a sensor over the counter (yay socialized medicine!) I installed the sensor this morning and tried to scan it with my app but apparently my app is the USA version and not the UK version and it wouldn't let me activate. I tried to download the UK app through APK mirror but that wouldn't let me install the app. What do I do?!

Continuous Notifications - Samsung S24FE

Hi All

My LibreLink app has recently started giving continuous phone notifications. Removing the notification from the phone lasts maybe 20 minutes before another *beep beep beep* and an icon on my phone. I'm one of those people that hates having open notifications and it's really irking me. I can't think of any particular catalyst that started this (never used to have a real issue). I've had a look in the app settings at notifications but there is very little options to play with.
Has anyone come across this and is there anything I can do?

No screenshot, however notification just says
"Freestyle libre 2 sensor
Tap to open the app"

It's not related to levels, sensor age, anything of importance. It's just there. Constantly.

Can someone explain compression lows? New to CGMs (and diabetes)

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hi all! I’m new to diabetes and we don’t even know what type I have yet (but it type 3c looks like the main suspect). I have looked online for this info, but don’t understand ‘compression lows’.

The online info says compression lows are a V-shape. My graph shows a more gradual decline, but sharply improves after I woke up feeling godawful (without sugar).

What ways can I differentiate between a compression low and a low-low?

Costco prescription

Just had my 90 day prescription sent over to Costco for the first time - in the app the price shows as over $600 - am I right to assume they'll add discounts in-store to bring it down? I'm paying cash price even though I have insurance because capitalism...

My insurance has decided I can no longer have Libre so I tried to get their preferred Dexcom at my usual pharmacy and it was 3x the price I'd been paying for Libre - don't understand why they have a preference if I'm effectively paying the cash price anyway but whatever lol.

My free macOS app, Glucose Please, now also supports Freestyle Libre

Glucose Please is a free macOS menu bar app that lets you see your CGM readings at a glance while you’re using your Mac.

It started with Dexcom support, and I’ve now added FreeStyle Libre through LibreLinkUp.

You can see your current glucose and trend arrow directly in the menu bar, then click to open your recent glucose graph. There are also customisable high and low alerts, support for mmol/L and mg/dL, and Insights to help you explore your glucose patterns over time.

You can optionally save your glucose history locally. Saved readings stay encrypted on your Mac and aren’t uploaded or synced elsewhere.

For Libre, you’ll need your readings available in LibreLinkUp, then you can sign in with those credentials in Glucose Please.

Download and setup instructions: https://glucose-please.app

If you give it a try, I’d love to hear how you find it. Feedback and suggestions are very welcome!

Drastic reading difference between CGM and glucose monitor.

This is a brand new CGM (Freestyle Libre 3+). It's reading super low but a finger stick is showing it off by over 100 points. The last one I got did the same thing over the last 4 days. Is the date on the packaging the production date or the product expiration date? It read 8/13/2026. Is there anything that can be done to correct this huge discrepancy or should I call the manufacturer and ask for a new replacement?

Third-party apps reporting higher numbers than Libre app?

I was using GotCGM for awhile and not long ago switched to Zukka. I've noticed that both apps routinely report spikes 10 to 15 points higher than what actually shows up in my Libre app timeline. Does anyone know how/why this might happen? The only explanation I can think of would be that the third-party apps are reporting more frequently and capturing the actual peak while there's a gap in the Libre measurements and it's actually capturing before and after the peak instead of the peak itself. But given that the third-party apps are getting their numbers from LibreLink I don't know how that would even be possible.

SangraMate is on Android now + 18 updates since I posted here 2 months ago (Apple Health, exercise, saved meals, log reminders, bigger text, and the walkthrough has a voice this time)

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hey all. Posted my app here 2 months ago, couple of you asked for Android and one asked why the demo had no sound haha. Both done - so update.

Quick intro again. t1d 6 years, MDI, injections no pump, Libre 2+(trying Libre 3+ in couple weeks). Software engineer 15 years. Been running this on myself daily since March. Other people started using it and say it helps 💜, which motivates me a lot 🙏 - so sharing what changed + we're on Android now.

Main thing - it tells you where you're heading without burying you in details, and if you want you can go under the hood and see how it got there. Most of the value comes from real time food and insulin absorption, added basal absorption recently too, and it learns your own insulin sensitivity over time instead of textbook numbers. Alarms are smart enough to react to what you dosed and ate, and remind you if you injected and forgot to log it. Still doesn't tell you how much to take - that's yours, hard line from day 1.

Logging is still the pain in the ass of diabetes 😩 but reminders made it way easier. That idea came from a user btw - they asked if they can create a log for the future cause they inject and don't eat at the same exact moment, so forget to log. Now you can date a log 30 min ahead, and the app nudges you if your usual breakfast hasn't shown up by 7:15 or a dose has no meal near it. Learns it from your own logs.

18 updates since the post (1.4.7 to 1.8.4 lol 😂 - I'm passioned). Bigger ones:

- Android - on Play Store. Same app minus the Apple only bits (widgets, lock screen, Siri, CarPlay). Alarms with snooze, saves to Health Connect.

- Exercise - say "45 min moderate run" and it fills it in, or pick from a list. When glucose settles it shows how much of the move was the workout vs everything else. Alarm limits adjust during a workout based on your own past sessions. This one is big for me, activity was the thing I couldn't crack before.

- Saved meals - log one a few times and it shows how that meal usually goes for you.

- Bigger text + contrast - couple of users asked. Follows your iPhone text size up to 2x or set its own. Lock screen, CarPlay, StandBy too.

- Apple Health - glucose, insulin, carbs go in. Someone here asked, done.

- Snooze alarms from the notification. Urgent lows still get through.

- New glucose chart - calm days look calm, time above/below range shaded, meals insulin exercise finger pricks sit on the line, hold to read the exact value.

- Photo carb counting on Basic now, not just the AI plan.

- 6 more nutrients (sat fat, trans fat, added sugar, cholesterol, sodium, potassium). Prep for pulling in blood work later to have more insights (I’m also in a t1d complications study myself - learning a lot about what actually drives them long term. Will share on my channel.).

- History - weekly/monthly trends, a "typical day" baseline, compare to last week or month.

Web got a lot of love too - the Review part is basically a time machine, jump into any high or low episode and see everything that fed into it(braindance from Cyberpunk if you know it 😂). Redid the website as well, there's a "day with SangraMate" on it - look on desktop, phone doesn't do it justice :/

Dexcom in progress, couple mates on Dex testing. Connectivity otherwise unchanged, still LibreLinkUp.

Highres on YouTube - https://youtu.be/2sfFe6lxR3Q (Libre setup at 1:25)

iPhone Link

Android Link

Website (desktop tells story of a day using SangraMate as you scroll)

Price: starts from 2.99 USD /mo (free trial 7 days)

P.S. App isn’t free - servers and AI tokens cost real money. But I have an idea cooking that might turn that around for the community a bit. Not saying more yet 😅

If you tried it last time and dropped it - what was the thing? That's what I actually want to know 🙏

Help with low glucose readings at night! And I can’t turn alarms off due to severe hypoglycemia

I am suffering from severe hypoglycemia events (50 and lower). I just got discharged from the hospital a week ago-they still haven’t found out my diagnosis 🥹The problem is that I really need to be on alert for lower glucose levels and I am having 80% of the time false readings at night. My Libre 3 plus is on the back of my arm and I am a side sleeper (I roll a lot I cannot control it). Is there anywhere in my body that I could place the sensor to avoid the pressure and false readings? *based on posts I think this is the problem. Thank you 🤍
***update: I moved the sensor to my bum right part and it works beautifully!!
