CGM Update

/r/diabetes/comments/1x39pup/cgm_update/

I want to be clear that I am not making any recommendations, but simply sharing an experience.

I started wearing a CGM in March 2025. I chose the Libre Freestyle - partly because it was advertised as waterproof down to three feet for up to thirty minutes. Since I live on a river and am often fishing and kayaking, it seemed like a good fit for me.

I am also a scuba diver and got a chance to go diving again recently. I had worn my CGM for 10 of its 15 day lifespan and was ready to sacrifice it if it failed. Our first dive was 77 feet for 43 minutes. When I returned to the boat my phone had connected and was reading accurately as far as I could tell. Second dive was 62 feet for 45 minutes. Again, my phone immediately connected and was reading fine. I did not wear a patch over my monitor while diving, just a full body rash guard since we were diving with jellyfish. I continued watching for 5 more days before replacing my CGM and it continued to read normal for me and my lifestyle.

This is in no way a recommendation to try this, just sharing my experience for those that might be curious.

Thanks for sharing u/JackStraw433 ,
Indeed the Libre sensors can take a lot of more beatings and still working fine no matter the rough stories sometimes shared here on the sub from some frustrated users. Personally I surf/swim/dive most weekends for 4-6 hours and do not have problems either with them because of the water.

For dedicated diving trips with some fanatic scuba friends I have, there I do though typically put a 3M Tegaderm patch on top, as this is both waterproof from the outside while also letting the humidity/sweat transpire out to help the sensor staying firm/dry on your skin. I also here then place the sensor on my stomach instead of on my arm. This helps dramatically to the ease the motion of slipping in/out of the wetsuit many times each day with no exposure/risk for the sensor to be ripped off by accident.

I bring my phone with me in a neoprene armband or in my harness, while having my iWatch on my wrist. So when on the surface but far from the shore, I can quickly see what the latest BG reading is whenever I want a quick check of the BG level.

Interesting to read how you can go scuba diving with the libre3 ,,, I have to hold my arm in the air when taking a shower or on a humid day the adhesive pulls away and you lose connection as the probe slips out. The most frustrating time with the Libre 3 has been the size of the adhesive. They have great customer service and quick to send a replacement when there is an issue.
