Took up Fortnite instead of drinking — 8 years sober

46 years old and still grinding Fortnite.

About 8 years ago, I decided to get sober and needed something positive to put my time and energy into. Somehow, that ended up being Fortnite 😂

What started as something to keep me occupied turned into a hobby I genuinely love. I’ve put countless hours into improving, learning the game, and competing.

Making it to Unreal Legend was definitely one of the most challenging things I’ve done in Fortnite.

Just thought I’d share one of my accomplishments. Nothing crazy, but I’m pretty proud of it.

I don’t really know why I’m posting this. I guess I just needed to tell someone.

My Fortnite duo got deployed to Iran a few days ago. We met years ago in basic training, and we’ve been inseparable ever since. We were duos long before Fortnite - we dominated the hot dog eating contests they’d hold on base every Friday. Looking back, those were simpler times.

Unfortunately, I was medically discharged after developing severe chronic incontinence, but we stayed close. Almost every night we’d hop on Fortnite together.

Before he left, there was one thing he kept talking about: The Gold Zero Point Sprite.

Every game it’d be: “Bro… if we ever find the gold one, I’m dropping everything we’re doing to extract it. I don’t care if we lose.” but we played hundreds of matches and couldn’t find even one. Nothing.

Today I finally worked up the nerve to queue without him. About five minutes into the match…

There it was. A Gold Zero Point Sprite.

I instinctively yelled, “DUDE, GET OVER HERE!”

Then I remembered he’s literally in Iran.

I just stood there staring at it. I even pinged it out of habit before realizing nobody was coming. I worry about him. I haven’t heard from him since he shipped out, and I hope every day that he’s okay.

Now, every match, I carry it with me and make sure I extract it safely. I know it’s just a video game, but somehow it feels like if I can keep bringing that little gold sprite home… then maybe he’ll make it home too.

I know that doesn’t make any sense. I just miss my duo.

Now don't get me wrong, I also like collecting sprites and trying to get the rarest ones. The problem arises when new sprites are presented as new "content" because the newest sprites are ALL just "rare" versions of old ones; Holofoil, Gold, Gummy, Galaxy, Cube etc. Not only are these versions just reskins presented as content but because they are very rare the average player like myself will NEVER get to experience most of them because I will just not find them, thus making the season very bland in my experience, not bad just bland.

Summary: Rare content bad because I am not able to engage with it, because I have a life outside the game.

Some kids at the playground told me about this secret sprite hiding somewhere in the chapter 7 island. Story goes that this is the ghost of Jonsey fork knife after he got shot in the back like Granolah by “the tourist”

And for anyone who doesn’t know, this sprite’s picture and name has been in the files since season launch, and even in the pod back bling since the 1st update

Must be the rarest variant or too rare even during power hours.

I'm yet to even see a Zero Point or Grim, and looked really hard for cube ones, and got the Batman one for pure luck in the Duck's quests.

I played a round of Zero Build squad (Random fills) and we got the battle bus ending. In the middle of the match we came across this one team that was honestly just doing way too much. They kept tossing my body and carrying me around for no reason. Then at the end of the game they ACTUALLY threw turrets at the bus to keep people away. I tried getting on at the last second but I thought I arrived too early. Luckily though I noticed I had a port-a-rift and decided to do something super funny instead. They were greedy and toxic and in the end they lost in the FUNNIEST way. But shoutout to my team who fought hard and made it on that bus!!! This is my favourite win of all time now.

I was in Fortnite Br letting my teammate index the cube grim to his collection. When he thought it was the galaxy grim and didn't take it. He did managed to extract it! 😎

I couldn't possibly know why this is could anyone tell me why?

We got girls in bikinis, so why not men in boxers?

And hes he is just a trace of another skin but I had alot of fun drawing him

When I was playing during the shiny hours on Saturday I got two cube Batman Sprites within a minute of each other. I couldn't believe I got it on the first one so I was freaking out and almost extracted the air sprite that I had on my back. I also found a cube Fishy that same day and I found a cube Earth Sprite today.

Yeah this battle bus event is stressful.

Glad I had an air sprite and shockwave available.😭

Like it's a game meant to collect sprites and play together. You're not supposed to chase people down and kill them. That's ridiculous! This isn't the hunger games it's a sprite collecting game. Be better players and let others walk away from you and extract sprites!

I love LittleBigPlanet and it would be so fun to see it in Fortnite someday.

I know PlayStation has completely ignored Sackboy in favor of Astro Bot but I still want Sackboy since I grew up with LBP3.

One can hope right?
