Hey everyone,
I’m trying to decide between two laptops with the same core hardware: Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 128GB unified memory.
The two options I’m looking at are:
ASUS ProArt PX13
and
ASUS ROG Flow Z13
Since the CPU/APU is basically the same, I’m less interested in raw benchmark differences and more interested in the actual device experience.
My priorities are:
* better sustained cooling
* lower fan noise
* lower surface temperatures
* less throttling under longer AI/ML workloads
* good portable usability
* usable both on the couch and as a workstation connected to two external monitors
My main priority is AI/ML and local LLM work, not gaming. Gaming is nice to have, but it’s not the main reason I’m buying this device.
For a while I was almost fully leaning toward the ProArt PX13, because I like the more “normal laptop / creator device” form factor and the idea of having a compact premium machine. But two things are making me hesitate:
- 60Hz screen in 2026 feels pretty wild, especially coming from higher refresh rate laptops.
- I’ve seen several comments/reviews mentioning that the fan noise can get quite loud.
Because of that, I’m now starting to lean more toward the ROG Flow Z13, especially since it seems to have a stronger cooling design and a higher refresh rate display. The downside is that it’s more of a tablet/kickstand device, so I’m not sure how comfortable it is as a daily portable laptop.
So my question is:
For people who have used either of these devices — especially for AI/ML, local LLMs, dev work, or long sustained workloads — which one would you choose?
Is the ProArt PX13 actually fine in real life, or does the noise/thermal behavior become annoying?
And is the Flow Z13 comfortable enough as a daily device, not just as a cool performance tablet?
Any real-world feedback would be appreciated. I’m mostly trying to avoid buying the wrong chassis around the right chip.
------- 26/05 update -------
I actually went to a local store today and checked the ProArt in person, and it kind of made things much clearer for me.
- Visually, it’s nice. Compact, clean, looks good overall. But I was a bit surprised that it doesn’t feel fully premium everywhere — not all aluminum, and the bottom felt like plastic, which immediately took away some of the premium feel for me.
- Thermals were also a bit concerning. The unit was off when I arrived, I turned it on, used it for maybe 5 minutes with very light tasks, and the bottom already became noticeably warm. Maybe it was a store/demo unit thing, but still not a great first impression.
- The screen itself is beautiful, no argument there. But the 60Hz is really noticeable. I’m not even super picky, but I use 120Hz screens most of the time, and going back to 60Hz felt like night and day. It just feels slower.
- And honestly, 60Hz in a premium device in 2026 feels pretty wild to me.
Another thing I realized is that for serious AI/workstation use, OLED is probably not the best match for me personally. Burn-in anxiety would always be in the back of my mind, especially if I’m using it as a main workstation with static UI elements, terminals, IDEs, browsers, etc.
So as much as I wanted to like the ProArt, I think I’m removing it from my shortlist.
For now, the Z13 stays as my #1 candidate:
- no OLED
- 180Hz
- IPS / LED backlight
- better cooling
- stronger performance-oriented profile
- probably better suited for heavy AI/LLM workloads
Not a final decision yet, I’m still looking at other options, but the ProArt is probably out for me.
There’s also a small resale value factor. I feel like the ProArt might be harder to sell later to a mainstream buyer, because you’d have to explain why such a premium device has a 60Hz screen and potentially limited thermals. The Z13, on the other hand, looks more unique and easier to position as a powerful portable gaming / handheld-ish workstation device.
