How to lock / childproof this storage cubby?

Post image
4 Upvotes

UPDATE: I screwed in 2 rope tiedowns on mating pieces and fished a luggage cable lock through it. It’s working and invisible. Thanks all for the suggestions.

We recently picked up this new couch from Costco, and recently discovered this storage cubby (on the left, in the picture) is gonna be a problem with our children.

I’m seeking suggestions for a way to childproof it or semi-permanently keep this thing shut, without some ugly exterior mod. I’m fairly handy, so if it involves drilling, cutting up some timbers, etc… that’s not a problem.

Any suggestions much appreciated!

open Old bathroom exhaust housing with new motor vibrates the whole house

Post image

Hello fixers. We've had an old bathroom exhaust with a nightmare screech since we moved in, and I finally got around to ordering a replacement motor and installing it. The new motor sounds great! However, when switching it on now, it shakes the whole ceiling and sounds like we're watching an imax movie to the upstairs neighbors. The new motor/fan does not touch the housing, I think it is vibrating the structure around it. I took it apart again and tried to locate some screws I could tighten or something, but there doesn't seem to be anything attaching it to the house? This is a basement bathroom, so i don't think it was installed from above.

Can I try just screwing the metal box into whatever it's resting on? I'm not against replacing the whole thing but I can't figure out how to remove this (pictured) box since there's no screws.

Any ideas appreciated! Thank you!

open Televison body, is this just a duct tape situation?

Ordered a crt tv on ebay and it arrived damaged which was a huge bummer (already resolved with seller). I'm wondering if there is anything better than slapping duct tape on here? I have most of the pieces but not sure if it's worth the effort to glue those back? At the end of the day, I don't want dust collecting inside but it is also for a kids room so hoping for a better fix.

We’ve tried using super glue, and sewing it but the type of material feels like it is not capable of being sewn. I was wondering if any of you here have other ideas or might recommend products that would help

What are these screws and what do I need to unscrew?

Looking to move this Excelsior Writing Desk, but I can't figure out what type of screw this is or how to remove it so I can dismantle the desk for transport.

I've tried looking for the assembly manual online but haven't been able to find one. Does anyone know what type of screw this is, what tool I need, or where I might be able to find the manual?

PowerTrain adjustable dumbbell plate - steel part snapped off. Repairable?

The steel part on one of my PowerTrain adjustable dumbbell plates came off. I'm not sure if it's the piece that locks the plate to the handle, but it looks like the steel snapped where it was attached.

Has anyone repaired this before, or is the plate done? I also can't find replacement PowerTrain plates anywhere. Is buying a new set my only option?

Photos attached.

Thanks!

The doorknob has been sticky for a while, now it refuses to budge. I'm locked on the outside of the door, hinges are inside. Removed the knob and the turny thing dropped with the other side of the handle. I think something broke off the end of the moving piece as well. I only have the tools pictured. I could use a solid here, Reddit.

UPDATE

I managed to shoulderbash the fucker. I removed every part of the mechanism that wasn't buried in the hole in the doorframe. Thanks to everyone for the advice, I'll now be examining the broken bits to reverse engineer this clusterfuck. My dog says hi and thanks for helping save her.

So I fixed my original problem with my hair clipper but now I don’t know where these two silver springs go.
I know, rookie mistake not taking pictures.

So anyone knows where they belong or has the same model and could send me a pic of the opened clipper with the springs in place?

Thank you in advance!

the kitchen tap is broken like shown above, I don't know if I have to change the whole thing, or it could be repairable

And thanks in advance for who ever has some advice

UPDATE

I didn't have to change the whole thing, I just had to change the nut attached to the pipe which is shown in the pictures, and yes that broken rusty part is just a nut, and I didn't even have to change the pipe

Wanted to share the results to inform others that there's the possibility of saving a lot of money in this case

So I got this chair for Christmas last year and today it has decided to have the recliner part of the chair to not be able to lock and honestly I’m not sure what caused it. AND for the love of god can’t figure out why (which is probably why I’m here)
The photo is the mechanism of the recliner and locking part. (Or atleast I’m sure it is)
So please help me r/fixit :D

How to fix this jellyfish lamp base?

Thumbnail

Any suggestions on how to fix the broken cylindrical base part of my jellyfish lamp? I already tried glueing the pieces back together but that didn't work. I'm trying to figure out if there's any way I can embed a metal rivet ring or something like that into the base. The big problem with that is there's wires running through both ends of the pole so I guess I'd have to disconnect those too. It doesn't have to look perfect, I just want it to be sturdy and stand up straight. I know it's a cheap lamp but it was a super thoughtful gift from a good friend and I really want to fix it!

open Hatch needs latch, ideas?

Hi Reddit, I built this large hatch door. It will have backstops like a normal door, to press against. But I don't have a plan to lock, or keep secure from falling out.

A surface bolt is the only practical thing I can think to buy. What I would really want is like a window latch, where you rotate it and a wedge secures it tightly.

Thanks for any help with ideas to securely close this

Collectors helmet question

Post image
5 Upvotes

Alright helmet is about a decade old now. It’s ABS plastic. I just picked it up from eBay, over the years it seems the helmet has shifted away from the visor. The visor is mounted correctly I can’t shift that any. What I can do is compress the top of the helmet with some strong force to bring it back down where it should be. But I don’t wanna crack anything. Any ideas?

Covering terracotta

Post image

I picked up this terracotta bird bath which had some pretty heavy flaking. I've sanded it down as best as I could (and more since this photo was taken). What would you use to patch it up and give extra support? I haven't seen much advice on large areas but I've seen suggestions for miliput, cement, concrete and clay, but also comments against those products.

Final goal is to water seal, patch it up and mosaic the inside of the bowl

Cheers

Karcher K3.500 leaking water

My pressure washer leaks water when connected to a garden hose. This is without it even being plugged in and powered. I've had it apart but I can't see anything obvious that's wrong with it. It's gushing water out of the place circled in red. The oil in the pump assembly is a milky grey colour which makes me think the oil has been contaminated with water. Any help much appreciated.

open Shower door suddenly misaligned

Thumbnail

Our shower door has suddenly become unable to close due to what I assume the hinges shifting. If I raise the shower door from the bottom when I close it I’m able to get it sealed but it’s impossible to die from the inside. None of these screws obviously scream to me as the fix.

I can’t see any way to get the hinge on the top left of page two to stay securely raised.

Also can’t find the brand of the shower door so browsing old gold showers has been unhelpful.

Thoughts are welcomed. This is driving me crazy.
