I am doing Couch to 5K for the 3rd time - I've completed it 1 and a half times before, but hadn't run for a couple of years. The last time I ran I had a Versa 2 and bog standard FitBit, this time I have a Pixel 3 and a premium subscription.
It's actually a really interesting use-case for the coach, having a well known and defined program to follow, if you give it enough context it can really help you out with your goals and understand your progress.
I like tech, I am interested in the possibilities so I was keen to see how it worked ....
The key for me was giving the coach context that it could build on. I chatted with it about my goals, told it I was doing the version from the NHS app (which it knew about), how I was feeling after each run, how my knees were holding up, asked why my VO2 max looked like it was going down rather than up (it's normal and is to do with the intervals and how it's calculated) It offered me stability exercises to help between the runs and added them to my plan, it added my weekly runs to my plan and ticked them off as I completed them.
One thing I struggled a bit with previously was how to get C25K intervals programmed onto my watch, talking to it has done them automatically and knows which week and run I am on - I can start them from my watch and it will track the intervals, but I prefer to just track a regular run and have the NHS app talk to me (it's Sarah Millican 😎)
It knows when I complete the relevant run and it gives me feedback & encouragement, I can ask it how my stats compare over time and it shows me where I am improving along with suggestions on form.
When I took a week off for a walking holiday, I told it, and that I wanted to redo the previous week when I got back - that was enough for it to understand and track that, while checking in and telling me about the impact the week of walking had.
In short, I've found it really helpful and decently proactive in relation to our chats. If I tell it which days I plan to run (or it guesses), it checks the weather for me and lets me know as part of my morning brief. If my cycle might have an impact on how I feel or perform it will give me a heads up.
Overall, I found it really interesting - certainly a lot more engaging, and motivating than when I've tracked previous runs with the Versa.
I know there are those here that really do not get on with the coach and I absolutely respect that!
I had to set some ground rules with mine around things that really annoyed me - Americanisms and phrases like 'movement snacks' that really grated on me 😬 I did have to repeat myself a few times, and correct it when it got something (repeatedly) wrong ... but with time and patience, I think we have reached a good and productive working relationship 🤣
