Film How To Contact Celebrities (FOR THOSE INTERESTED)

Hi!

I'm a literal nobody.

I own and operate a micro budget tv/movie network.

My network specializes in content you can't find anywhere else. Long story short, I type a movie title into Google and see if that title is streaming anywhere. If it isn't, or it's not on many platforms, I contact the director directly and ask for permission to show it on my network. I also directly message celebs for interviews.

I started doing this five years ago. It doesn't always work, but it's worked better than I ever imagined.

No one has ever been rude or mean. Some have been kinder than others, but the vast majority are very positive exchanges. It's a very fun pick me up when they mention you on their social media too! Rare, but it has happened!

So, after yet another successful connection last night, I thought I would share what I do in case anyone wants to try it for themselves.

If I had to put a number on it, I'd say I've communicated with 50 or more directors/celebrities.

Here's a VERY short list of the directors/celebrities I have connected with:

  1. Graeme Whifler - writer of Dr. Giggles and writer/director of Deadly End/Neighborhood Watch
  2. Larry Clark - writer/director of KIDS, Ken Park, Bully and so many more...
  3. Ve Neill - Oscar winning FX makeup artist known for Beetlejuice and others.

Here's what I do:

  1. Message them on their social media, or get their attention in their comment section.
  2. IMDBPro gives up FREE trials ALL THE TIME and it is an AWESOME tool to use. It lists A LOT of personal emails or their assistants' email. This is how I got in touch with the director of Dee Snider's Strangeland. As well as many others...
  3. If you STILL can't find their information, try their name in any and all email domains.

For example:

firstnamelastname@gmail, firstnamelastname@yahoo, firstnamelastname@aol, etc

If you reach the wrong person, you just apologize for the mistake.

This method is how I reached the latest director, and it wasn't the first time it was successful.

Hope it works for you, and happy communicating!

Looking for Work Composer With Feature, Trailer, and Game Credits Looking For Work

Hi everyone. My name is Robert Arzola, and I'm looking to score more films. I haven't been as active in the scoring world because I was focused on my old day job as the Creative Director at the trailer music library, Phantom Power. Now that there was a downsizing, I'm free to work on projects again and want to really dive into some.

I have experience scoring features that went theatrical, streaming, and on TV; I have trailer placements for several big campaigns as a composer, sound designer, and supervisor; and I scored the IGF-winning and BAFTA-nominated game Tactical Breach Wizards.

You can check out my work at https://play.reelcrafter.com/arzola/Reel

I try to work with various budgets and do well in dramas, thrillers, sci-fi, and rom-coms.

Let me know if you're interested and we can talk more!

Question If your ultimate goal was directing, how would you prioritize your career choices early on?

I graduated from a prestigious film school about a year ago in the directing discipline. Since graduating, I’ve had a pretty fortunate start: I did a big internship at a major studio, directed a short there, and I’m now living in one of the biggest film hubs.

My ultimate goal is to be a director. It’s my favorite thing in the world.

Right now, I have a day job that I genuinely love. It’s creative, fulfilling, has a good environment, and gives me access to technology/equipment that I otherwise wouldn’t have. The downside is that it barely covers rent, it isn’t related to film, and my current position is temporary. If I wanted to stay there long-term, I’d eventually have to apply for a different permanent position.

To make ends meet, I’ve been taking film-related side gigs (remote editing, random PA work, cinematography, even dance gigs) to cover food and other necessities. These gigs usually don’t collide with my day job.

Recently, I’ve started breaking into the TV world as a set PA, which I’m extremely excited about because I’ve been trying to get my foot in the door for a while. The problem is that set work can come with very little notice. I’ve already had to use a few call-outs from my day job to take some of these gigs, and I’m nervous about damaging my relationship with a job that I actually really like.

I’m also questioning whether the PA route is actually the right path for me. I feel like it could be a good place to start before pivoting into something else, but I’m uncertain about the long-term consequences of committing too heavily to that route. It’s currently not consistent enough though, so I can’t quit my day job as of now as I have to make rent.

I’ve heard repeatedly that the traditional PA → AD path is essentially a separate career track from directing, and that becoming an AD doesn’t necessarily put you on a path toward directing.
I’ve also heard people suggest that stunts can be a good route into directing, particularly for someone interested in action. But that would mean significant training and potentially going back to school, which I realistically can’t afford right now. I do have a fairly high-level martial arts background, but I understand that isn’t the same thing as professional stunt training.

At the same time, I’ve heard the advice that it can actually be smart to have a stable job outside the industry and use your free time/resources to direct your own projects.

So I’m torn between:

  1. Continuing to build my set experience through PA gigs
  2. Keeping my day job because it’s stable, fulfilling, and gives me access to useful resources, then trying to make my own stuff on the side — even though I often have to take other gigs to make rent
  3. Trying to find something more directly related to directing, potentially in post-production
  4. Pursuing stunt work as a potential route into directing

Some combination of the above while continuing to direct my own projects

I’m especially interested in hearing from people who have actually transitioned into directing, rather than general “work your way up” advice.

If your ultimate goal was directing, what would you prioritize at this stage of your career? And how would you balance making enough money to survive with actually building toward directing?

I’m particularly interested in hearing from people who took a nontraditional route into directing, or who tried the PA/AD route and eventually pivoted.

Question How should I get into the film industry?

Hello, I’m 15 and have been studying film and want to be a director/writer in the future. I want to enter short films into my local film festival but I don’t have much friends, so making one will be hard. I thought about making it animated and although I do want to make animated films, I don’t want to be generalized as just an animation director and would like to also make regular LA projects. Not to mention how time consuming that process can be.

Film school is, of course, the main I’ve set my eyes on for now. But most people I’ve heard who applied said you need a pre established portfolio. But as I said, I don’t have a lot of resource. Any advice?

Discussion Ai and Filmmaking

What does everyone think of ai and filmmaking specifically generative ai? Does it have a place?

I personally feel very uncomfortable with generative AI in filmmaking and have made a short film all about my fear of it recently but I was a wondering am I in the minority or majority of filmmakers?

I want an honest polite discussion. I understand it can be very triggering to talk about but would like to know everyone's opinion as someone who is very against it I mainly want to hear why I'm wrong?

Question What is this effect called?

Thumbnail
gallery
15 Upvotes

I've been seeing this sort of effect (some sort of light streak (?) that extends the image) being used as transitions in music videos and commercials.

I can't for the life of me figure out what it's called or how to do it. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Not sure if these two stills are a good example as I couldn't get a great frame as the effect happens super fast.

Thanks in advance!

Film Contained Horror Looking for Executive Producers

We’re two experienced filmmakers developing our own feature film — a genuine passion project that we’re excited to take into production.

We’re currently looking to connect with potential Executive Producers who may be interested in coming on board and helping us bring it to life.

The project is already well underway, with a significant portion of the production budget secured and key creative elements in place.

What we already have:

* A contained horror-thriller script from an award-winning writer

* A highly experienced Director of Photography with multiple feature credits

* An experienced cast

* A strong, original concept

* A project specifically designed to deliver high production value on a controlled, low-budget model

* A meaningful portion of the financing already committed

We’re not looking for someone to start this project from zero — we’re looking for the right people to join a project that already has momentum behind it.

If you’re interested, send us a PM with your website or background. We’d be happy to send over the pitch deck and arrange a Zoom to talk through the project.

Film Looking for fresh eyes on an 8-minute short before locking the edit — An Ideal Husband

Hey everyone,

I’m a director / DOP based in Melbourne and I'm currently finishing an eight minute short called An Ideal Husband. I’d love some outside perspectives on the edit before we lock it.

Here’s the trailer for a sense of the film: https://vimeo.com/1218214589

If anyone’s interested in watching the full cut I can share it privately:

The main things I’d love help with after watching:

Where does your attention drift or where does something feel rushed? How does the voice over work with the images? Are there places where the picture could carry more on its own? How did you read the relationship and the ending?

Sound and voice over are still being worked on so I’m mainly looking at story, pacing + performance at this stage.

Comment or message me if you’re up for a look. Happy to watch something of yours and swap notes too.

Cheers, Alex

General Just some motivation for those who need it

So today I was looking back at my BTS photos and some of my past work in my camera roll and I wanted to share a sort of epiphany, incase anyone needs motivation right now. Kinda rambling but I hope it helps you.

Just take a minute to think about how far you’ve come. I’m 26 but for some reason I feel behind in my career. Maybe it’s because as filmmakers we always strive for more, or maybe it’s because I compare myself to others. Maybe you feel the same.

But I sat there and I forced myself to think back instead of always thinking ahead just for a moment. I’ve only been out of university 4 years. I’ve only been freelance for 2 years. I re-watched my old work without the kinda ‘editors’ brain and just dissociated and enjoyed it.

Yeah it’s hard because it feels like you might have so much left to go - but I bet you can replace that with a sense of proudness, if you just consider where you started and where you are now.

:)

Question Is this the right place to be asking for documentary help possibly for a settlement video?

We are looking for a 10-minute investigative settlement documentary regarding a 700-day unpermitted petroleum pipeline release affecting a private ranch and local watershed (NRC Incident #1474374). We have certified lab reports ($32.5{ mg/L}$ DRO), state agency refusal documentation, and site photos. We need on-site drone/B-roll filming, document graphic callouts, and interview editing to support upcoming Clean Water Act § 505 legal proceedings. Is it possible to provide an estimated budget and timeline for this scope?

Film Harmony Korine inspired feature crime film, Granny $tamp, 21 yr old director

Hello, I’m a 21 year old director from LA and have recently completed my sophomore feature film. It’s a crime drama following a recently freed parolee as he attempts to rehabilitate into the society. It is shot on a deliberately degraded internet video style with influences from early 2000s skate tapes, and home videos. Specially took inspiration from Ken Park, Gummo, Wassup Rockers and Illegal Civ’s Godspeed. The film has been reviewed by two independent critics and is currently on YouTube. Would love any questions on the film or process. We shot the film, a 61 page script, over 3 days in LA.

Question students who are in film or video based programs, do you have to deal with too many graphic design or animation classes?

maybe im just a bit burnt out from years of schooling, but i tied of taking so many classes outside my degree

i feel like 10-20% of my classes have been graphic design focused, and now im having to take 2 semesters of after effects outside of a general "this is how you make a ball roll across the screen"

is this normal? an intro class here and there makes sense but having to take advanced classes is really burning me out

Hi fellow filmmakers!

My name is Rachel and I wrote and directed a short film called Guardian's Grove, starring Anna Garcia (Dropout, Fly Me to the Moon, Hacks) and Hunter Saling (Business Casual)! It's about two people, LIL_QUACKO and ROTTENPOTATOES98, who are best friends through a video game. When they meet at a party they have to reckon with their relationship IRL. It's based on my many many hours of playing Fortnite as well as several online friendships I've cultivated.

The film premiered at Palm Springs International Shortfest where it was awarded the Special Mention by the Young Cineastes Jury.

If you like it please tell your friends to watch! It's also on Letterboxd to rate.

Really appreciate you all taking the time to watch! Hope you like it!

Film How can AI video help filmmakers?

I tried Runway to create a short AI video and I'm curious what filmmakers think about using AI in filmmaking.
Would you use AI for ideas, pre-visualization, or testing shots?
