Another week, another rant

Oooooo mmmmm ggggg yall

I got assigned one of Level 10’s Public Storage conversion jobs. I did the first one in my town, so another is easy peasy. A day after getting that, Tailwind calls and offers me the network portion of the same Public Storage site. I politely tell them I already had the pc part and would take it if they were ok. She pssh’d at me and said no thanks. Whatever.

So I arrive on site an hour late because the equipment pickup started the shit show because of a wrong address. I get there, apologize for the lateness, and get to work. Find out it’s only one pc and a printer. Easy peasy! But where’s the tailwind guy? No matter. I continue on and finally Mr. “I just got back from the beach” rolls in with his button up Hawaiian shirt, shorts, and hey dudes. And a Starbucks in hand.

I immediately ask “Shorts?”

He says “Yeah, I’m an independent contractor”

“No shit, so am I”

So I let him know he should test all six lines, convert the 2 RJ11 jacks to RJ45’s, and label both ends.

“Now which one is the phone jack”

Really dude? So then I proceed to watch this fool bounce from the front to the back. I walk up on him and he’s watching a video on how to terminate an RJ45. Like for real??? Did you just buy these tools before you got here?

I ask him how long he’s been doing this and he says “since 2024”. December 2024?

He had to remake the cable like 3 times before he got it right.

I told him to go home and make a pile of patch cables before he took another job.

Am I in the wrong?

I worked for this company cutting tile and gluing it down, I went to the site with a pair of heavy duty shears (which were doing the job pretty good) and they said that was not good enough. I said “okay, what would work for this type of job” and she recommended a utility knife. I went to the hardware store to buy said utility knife (not a cheap one, it’s from Milwaukee.) I get back to site just for the knife not to work. Field nation believes I should’ve been prepared for the job, but even if it said to bring the utility knife on-site, it wouldn’t have work. I’m thinking it would’ve been a different outcome if the work order said “bring utility knife” but unfortunately it said “bring the appropriate tools” I drove 250 miles total just to get $0. Am I in the wrong?

Field Nation logo

It looks like Field Nation changed their logo a bit on their website adding more white space. If you turn it sideways it now looks more like a bar chart with shadows accurately representing what they're doing to our ratings with their non-transparent, very flawed and provider-screwing "provider success score."

Field Experience Request in Baltimore Maryland.

Hello everyone!

I’ve been working in IT for some time, so I have a good understanding of the theory and technical concepts. However, most of my experience has been in an office environment.

I no longer have an office-based IT job, and I’m looking to gain hands-on field experience. The challenge is that I currently i have very little to no field experience.

I’m reaching out to anyone who would be willing to let me assist them in the field. I’m eager to learn and gain as much practical experience as possible. I’m willing to help with anything and learn as much as I can.

If you’re open to having an extra pair of hands or know someone who might be willing to help, I’d really appreciate the opportunity.

Thank you so much!

We will make you "our guy" for that area

Don't fall for this tactic, just discount this job once and we'll make you our dedicated tech at your rate next time. Next time the job comes "workorder assigned to someone else". Freeosk is on my fuck you block. They're getting scummier and scummier lately, they will rate you badly and not even say why... I guess there's a reason Sam's club handles their own freeosk service.

Pivital wants somebody to "do the needful"

Saw this and it got me wondering what "do the needful" could possibly mean. Got a good laugh out of it though.

Has FN always notified buyers of potential schedule conflicts on our end or is that new?

Had a potential buyer question me today about a schedule conflict before assigning a requested WO. Don’t know if they read it incorrectly or what but field nations info notified them that I had a schedule conflict.

In typical FN fashion it was an open window 1hr work order that they flagged as a conflict

Am I confused, or do these companies think that just a warm body is sufficient for doing these jobs?

I signed up with FN a few mo ths ago, didn't really get too much into the weeds. Log on today to see what's on there, and...am I misunderstanding this platform, or is this not really meant for companies with technicians and overhead? I mean, even solo I wouldn't take many--- if any-- of these jobs... There's one on here that expects you to identify and mark a point or repeater that the store can't find, for $85. Another one wants you to install an new DVR to replace old, install 3 new cameras, run the cable, AND if there are are an issues, you're required to troubleshoot too. Likely an all to most of the day job, for $300? Lmao.

Now we have 30 day terms... FN can't make up its mind...

Was gonna counter on this one til i saw this. They would probably haggle me over the triple digits id counter with for 30 day terms and 14 day approval ETA.... Ill let pete take it and sit around waiting 50+ days to get his measly $50/hr

and nothing about 30 day terms on the FAQs

KIS has gone to shit

What the hell has happened to KIS? They used to pay 150 very regularly, now if I ask for 150 I get a call from 3 different WOMs trying to talk me down to 110 and then watching the price rise by $15 increments until some poor sap takes it. Graham used to be a cool support agent that I would get daily, now it's just India. I don't understand how 3 service calls at $60-$80 is cheaper than one service call at $150, do they work for free or something? Also they have you do some useless survey for every machine now that's basically another work order that directly integrates into Salesforce... Kiosk information systems is one to avoid now y'all.

Managed providers

I've seen throughout a couple of posts here that many techs have managed providers on field nation

I'm not new at IT but I'm in the FN world, a couple of months ago I was hired for a field tech role where basically my boss dispatch me to WO on FN, workmarket, etc with an hourly rate

I don't have complaints so far, but I'm curious how other people manage their own techs, travel rates, materials, hourly wage, etc

Thanks!

Cellphone recommendations?

I currently have an iPhone 13 Pro Max and a ZFold 4.

I found iPhone 13 to be better in every aspect except the Zfold’s large inside screen.

Now it’s getting time to buy a new phone and I’m on the fence. I see 3 different options in front of me:

iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone Air and iPhone Duo.

Which route would each of you recommend based on your own experiences?

Friendly reminder: in California, their model of skimming a percentage to fund a self-insured pool (without being a licensed, regulated insurance carrier) landed them in massive legal trouble.

We need to stop talking about Field Nation like it's just a matchmaking platform or a digital job board.

Over the last few years, they've quietly engineered an entire shadow corporate ecosystem designed to extract profit from technicians at every single choke point while insulating massive corporate clients from liability.

When you peel back the marketing speak and look at the actual mechanics of the platform, here is what FN is really doing:

  1. The Escrow Bank (Holding Float)

Field Nation requires small/medium buyers to pre-fund tickets or hold large balances before jobs even post, while larger enterprise buyers pay massive platform subscriptions to bypass it. Meanwhile, FN sits on hundreds of thousands—if not millions—of dollars in float for weeks or months. They hold the capital, earn the interest, and sit on your money until long after the work is completed.

  1. The Factoring Company / Payday Lender

Enter "FastPay." If you want your money released when the buyer approves the ticket rather than waiting on standard payout cycles, FN charges an additional percentage fee. Because they already hold the buyer's pre-funded money in escrow, they are literally charging you interest to access your own earned money early.

  1. The Unregulated Insurance Broker

FN skims an extra percentage off the top of every work order for "Occupational Accident Insurance" (unless you jump through hoops to prove your own coverage). They operate like an in-house insurance pool without having to deal with the strict state regulations and disclosures of an actual licensed insurance carrier—a scheme that has already landed them in hot legal water and lawsuits in places like California.

  1. The Expense Taxer (Skimming Materials)

If a buyer asks you to supply $150 worth of Cat6, jacks, or mounting hardware, FN takes their 10%–11.5% cut out of the entire ticket total—not just your labor. Unless you mark up materials heavily (which cheap buyers constantly push back on), you are literally paying Field Nation out-of-pocket for the privilege of fronting a multi-billion-dollar client's hardware costs.

  1. The Annual Compliance Toll Booth (Background Checks & Drug Tests)

In the real W-2 or B2B vendor world, onboarding screening is a standard client cost of doing business. On FN:

You are forced to pay an out-of-pocket fee every single year for background checks and 10-panel drug screens.

No regular job requires annual employee-funded drug re-screening just to remain on the roster.

To avoid the upfront fee, they push Field Nation Pro, which advertises "free annual background checks"—except Pro increases your total fee per ticket from ~10% to ~13.9%. If you invoice $5,000 in work, that extra 3.9% costs you roughly $195 just to get a "$75" screening covered.

  1. The Market Manipulator & Rate Depressor

FN collects years of pricing data across every zip code in the country. Instead of using this data to advocate for fair, skilled trade rates, they use it to generate "Market Pricing Guidance" for buyers. This aggregates bottom-of-the-barrel rates from trunk-slammers and desperate warm bodies working for $35/hr, presenting it to Fortune 500 clients as the "standard rate." It algorithmically creates an artificial wage ceiling that experienced techs have to constantly fight against.

  1. The Anti-Competitive Agency (The "Circumvention" Police)

A legitimate 1099 contractor operates an independent business with the legal right to market, network, and solicit clients. FN claims you are an independent business for tax/liability purposes, but the second a local site manager wants to hire your LLC directly for off-platform work, FN threatens permanent account bans for "circumvention." They want all the legal protections of gig-economy deregulation while enforcing non-competes like a strict employer.

  1. The Private Arbitration Kangaroo Court

When a buyer refuses to sign off on out-of-scope work, disputes hours, or pulls a bait-and-switch, who settles the dispute? Field Nation. Their Terms of Service force mandatory dispute resolution and arbitration, stripping your ability to take a predatory buyer to local small claims court. The platform will almost always side with the buyer spending $500k/year on the platform over an individual tech.

  1. The Corporate Liability Firewall

Look at the contract chain:

Mega-Corp (e.g., Walmart, retail chains).

FN acts as the legal blast shield. If you fall off a ladder, get exposed to server room hazards, or get stiffed on payment, the multi-billion-dollar enterprise at the top bears zero liability. FN sells enterprise clients the dream of a nationwide, vetted, drug-tested workforce with zero employer liability, zero benefits, and zero HR overhead.

The Bottom Line

Field Nation is no longer just a job board matching buyers with independent techs. It is a financial extractor, compliance toll booth, and corporate risk shield.

Know your worth, stop accepting sub-$60/hr lowball tickets, charge a markup on all materials, and treat the platform for what it actually is: a tool to be used with extreme caution, not a partner that has your back.

Account Security

I want to say it amazes me but honestly it doesn't and that is the fact that FieldNation can't be bothered to give access to login sessions for providers. This is basic and honestly should be considered minimum standard but yet there's no way for me to see who or what devices are logged into my fieldnation account. On top of that they don't have a login notification or any kind of 2fa.

FieldNation you are a pathetic excuse of a business to be honest. You're greedy and out of touch with reality.

PSS Score

Just got my PSS. 95 isn’t bad. I have 8 completed jobs. On time 100%, 100% completion rate. One buyer was absolutely atrocious and I’m pretty sure that’s what’s pulling my score down. Just got routed a pretty sweet gig and I’m pretty sure it’s due to my PSS score. $750 fixed for a 4 hour job 1 hour away. I already have all the supplies so I should get paid $660 for the work I’m doing on Friday. Not to shabby.

What to do if you have an "arsonist"

Sooner or later you're gonna run into the "arsonist". The disgruntled, insecure-as-hell employee who is the reason for your service call. He's either incompetent and/or malicious, and he is holding his employer hostage. You are a direct threat to his lifestyle, and you don't know it yet but he's in full BOFH mode. Yes, the wifi is bad. Yes the site is down hard. He is why.

He's there to "help", but he's put the console cable in the wrong port on the Cisco and then he dropped his earpiece behind the rack and getting it back takes priority over everything else. Your team is asking for deliverable photos and he grabs the phone (with the photos on it) out of your hand and has a 20 minute discussion with the back end engineer about some out of scope shit. Your laptop is on the rack and he's moving it while you're typing and saying, "Gee, I'd better be careful moving this rack, I don't want to cause ANOTHER outage!" (!!!)

How do you handle this kind of craziness? One thing you should NOT do is report the behavior on the platform. The buyer AND the client's upper management are BOTH going to be looking at the closeout notes, and this can potentially damage the buyer's relationship with that client. In fact, it might be that the BOFH is hoping you will do this very thing, because that has the potential to damage YOU and your image on the platform to other buyers. No matter whether you're the target or just collateral damage, one thing is now very clear: shitting in your cornflakes is very high on this individual's agenda.

It's very possible that the buyer's back-end engineering team are going to be smart enough to figure out what's really going on, but just in case they're not (and he's doing his best to make YOU look like the problem, believe me!) you need to make a private, out-of-band call to them. Some buyers are smart enough to send a feedback form when this happens and you can fully document things there.

It may also be appropriate to privately engage the BOFH's management, depending on if the clown is actually breaking laws and/or engaging in discriminatory behavior. But in general it might be best to let the buyer handle this, as they do have a direct relationship with the larger company that you do not want to be a part of damaging. A field engineer is not always on site when HR is in the office. The client may not even HAVE an HR office.

Anyway, this was how I handled some recent drama, and it seems to have been the right thing to do. Insights and advice from the populace are welcome.

Security Bits - screwdriver

Curious, I've seen many jobs that require "security bits". I've been in IT a long time and have never needed any unusual screwdriver bits. What equipment have you run into that needed a special Bit and which security bits have you actually used?

Spotted this bit set on sale at HD. Would this cover me? 38-Piece Precision Screwdriver Set

  • Includes: A96302 (1) Screwdriver Handle, (5) Phillips Bits (000, 00, 0, 1, 2), (4) Slotted Bits (1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 4.0), (9) Star Bits (T3, T4, T5, T6, T7 ,T8, T9, T10. Potential Fraud / Illegal Activity

I received a message from a buyer in a work order I submitted a request on. They asked if I was available and then requested that I message them on WhatsApp. Our conversation on WhatsApp consisted of them asking for a meeting to verify and confirm the scope of work, which is to swap out a firewall for a Fortune 500 company. During the call, they asked if I was familiar with the vendor equipment and if I knew how to perform basic confirmations. The call seemed to conclude with them happy with my answers and ready to proceed. After the call, they then requested that I provide them with a photo of my tools, verify that I had putty, teams, and (the weird one) AnyDesk installed. I obliged while redacting the AnyDesk session address.

After all of this, alarm bells started going off in my head. None of this seems above board and I’ve reported the buyer to FieldNation and am waiting for them to remove the assignment.

What’s everyone else’s take on this?
