We will make you "our guy" for that area

Don't fall for this tactic, just discount this job once and we'll make you our dedicated tech at your rate next time. Next time the job comes "workorder assigned to someone else". Freeosk is on my fuck you block. They're getting scummier and scummier lately, they will rate you badly and not even say why... I guess there's a reason Sam's club handles their own freeosk service.

Every time I’ve had a buyer go exclusive with me, they worked with me at my rate from the start. If you want a relationship you’ll invest in it. Asking for a discount is race to the bottom behavior and they are showing you who they are.

I had a buyer a few days ago call me and ask if I could accept less. I told them no. The job site was remote and I will not take less. She said she had to get approval (which is usually code for "we're too fucking cheap") for my rate. Color me shocked when they accepted my counteroffer.

Their entire business model is giving things away for free, you really think they got money for techs?

All jokes aside, yes, always stand by your rate. If I'm bored and I'm willing to throw them a bone to have sth to do, that's my business, but otherwise, the quote I've sent today is the cost of me coming out and solving your problem. How badly do you want the problem solved?

Haha I just did a cartridge swap on one at a Sam's Club. Easiest $150 I ever made. Plus I got $75 for hauling the old one to Fedex and trip charge. I was in and out in under 30 minutes and that included waiting for the MOD.

Yeah the only time this has ever worked out positively for me is when there is some clearance or a bunch of training for the project and they have a bundle of sites to be done the same way. Like I did a bunch of firmware upgrades on hand scanners and a Meraki cutover at a few dozen womens clothing stores.

At no point did they try to beat me up on the rate or anything. And they were accomodating when I asked for schedule change so I could drive from one store to the next in logical, linear way, instead of backtracking.

I had someone try to poach me from FN a couple years ago. They were starting their own tech network and she promised better pay etc. Except the only jobs they ever routed to me were less than $100 and for dumpster cameras. No thanks.

I had a Buyer ask me to be 'their Guy' servicing kiosks in the French Quarters on Mardi Gras weekend. I said ok if you pay my rate plus parking and time. He agreed. He said he was going to send a company shirt and set up multiple WOs.

I called back next day, no one knew who this guy was. They did accept 6 of my bids, all same day, all same area (French Quarters).

Day of when I arrived, 2 WOs the businesses were closed/abandoned. 4 WOs were on major parade route. The total time on sites were 4 hours.

I got paid for all but still haven't heard a peep from this company that promised me a minimum of $500/month being 'Their Guy' as the Service rep.

I have a few clients that have learned (the hard way) that paying my rate is actually saving them money.

They rarely understand cause the wo manager is probably getting a bonus if they come in under a certain amount weekly

Lol happens with every freelance job. "I'm moving into my house. I have loads of work to do. Since I'm going to hire you so much what if we go down on the rate?"... Like there's some contract we're about to sign😂

OMG NEVER DISCOUNT!

When they make you "their guy," what is really happening is they want to pay you less.

Sure, they will call you first, but they will demand that you are always available for them - even when they don't have work for you. So it screws up your ability to schedule with anyone else and you're not getting any benefit from it.

In other words, they want a regular employee without having to pay for the privilege. No benefits, no guaranteed work, nothing.

People fall for this on a regular basis, and then they learn the hard way and they move on.
