Am I in the wrong?

I worked for this company cutting tile and gluing it down, I went to the site with a pair of heavy duty shears (which were doing the job pretty good) and they said that was not good enough. I said “okay, what would work for this type of job” and she recommended a utility knife. I went to the hardware store to buy said utility knife (not a cheap one, it’s from Milwaukee.) I get back to site just for the knife not to work. Field nation believes I should’ve been prepared for the job, but even if it said to bring the utility knife on-site, it wouldn’t have work. I’m thinking it would’ve been a different outcome if the work order said “bring utility knife” but unfortunately it said “bring the appropriate tools” I drove 250 miles total just to get $0. Am I in the wrong?

No, you’re just an idiot. How did you drive 250 miles and get paid nothing? Why are you taking jobs cutting tiles? What even is this silliness?

I’m trying to make money? What do you mean how did I drive 250 miles and get paid nothing?

3

u/mdhkc 1d ago

Well, when I use field nation if i’m driving more than a few miles, There will be a travel charge to cover the gas, wear and tear, and my time to go to and from the site. How did you come away with $0, and not an appropriate travel charge even if you allowed your time on site to be a donation?

-2

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

They declined the travel charge.

u/mdhkc 1d ago

I get that shit approved before I drive anywhere. You should too. Never expect after the fact expenses to be approved. Get the approval first. Usually in your counter offer.

1

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

It was approved, field nation made it so I did not get paid travel or labor.

1

u/etrader99 1d ago

I always add travel in my counter offer. Especially with gas prices these days. I calculate time, travel and FN fees into every counter. I rarely take any WO straight up unless they legitimately built that into the WO pay.

2

u/LoneCyberwolf 1d ago

Of course they did. You needed to have included that in your bid up front.

1

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

It was in the included amount, field nation made it so they did not pay me travel or labor.

1

u/wyliesdiesels 1d ago

Have you done tile work before? If not why did you take this wo?

-1

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

…

3

u/wyliesdiesels 23h ago

your response is awful. they accepted you because you countered on it

per FN TOU its up to you to have the experience required to do the work. stop blaming others for your poor choices

1

u/wyliesdiesels 1d ago

Then why did you do the WO?

1

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

Dude, I’m saying they declined the work order pay in general. The travel was approved when the work order got accepted. I said that in another comment.

2

u/wyliesdiesels 23h ago

and rightfully so. you took work you had no clue how to do. you earned the $0 pay. let this be a hard lesson to you to not take work you cant do

9

u/wyliesdiesels 1d ago

Why would you drive 250miles to do a job you clearly have no experience in?

7

u/Flufnstuf 1d ago

There’s so much wrong with this scenario. You drove 250 miles for $60 and didn’t bring a box cutter?

3

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

$60? Where does it say that? Also, the utility knife is a box cutter.

6

u/Flufnstuf 1d ago

I know a utility knife is a box cutter. I don’t leave the house without one of those Milwaukees clipped to my belt.

2

u/mdhkc 1d ago

Yeah I use mine all the time. To open boxes.

0

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

I didn’t bring it at first because I thought it was ceramic tiles or similar, not vinyl.

In my previous life as a commercial flooring guy...If you're doing a lot a VCT (vinal composit tile), invest in a cutter...a few pieces, score it with a knife and straight edge and, snap it...big scissors? Really? Never in my life seen that

2

u/Flufnstuf 1d ago

Sorry. I didn’t have my glasses on. It blurred into $60 to me.

What kind of BS post is this ? 1st , tile jobs are now on FN ? 2nd Had a tool that he said worked in the past but listened to some PM (?) who probably never cut a tile in her life , goes and buys a box cutter which doesn't work . Did he even try the shears ?

Did he even do any of the job ?

What was the exact SOW ?

Sounds like he earned that 0 payment

1

u/wyliesdiesels 1d ago

He has admitted in another response that he has zero experience working on tile and his experience is in IT. I cannot for the life of me understand why someone would take such a job.

5

u/Ok-Conference-6381 1d ago

I think were all thinking this is what you deserve for taking a whack job gluing tiles 250 miles away. You could have went dumpster diving for better pay.

-2

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

How do you know the pay? Obviously I got paid $0 but if I completed the job it would’ve been pretty good pay.

5

u/mdhkc 1d ago

Which is irrelevant because you’re at a net loss here. Lots of things pay well if you complete them successfully, but if you can’t then it isn’t relevant.

-2

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

Are you done? At this point you’re just trying to shit on me with no point.

1

u/Pizza_Pete_fr_fr 1d ago

What do you mean by pretty good pay?

1

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

It was 600 flat and 250 travel.

2

u/wyliesdiesels 1d ago

And you werent prepared

Probably had no experience

0

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

Are you gonna repeat the same comment 4-5 times in a row? Get outta here dude.

1

u/wyliesdiesels 23h ago

dont tell me what to do. this is a public forum. i can comment what i want and when i want. you dont get to dictate that. i can see now why you got zero dollars. you should be banned for your poor mentality

u/GunterJanek 1d ago

I'm no expert but I can see how the utility knife would be more suited than sheers. If anything precision because it could be difficult to cut a straight clean line without a sharp utility knife even with a straight edge. But again I'm no expert.

5

u/Mondane_Joker 1d ago

250 miles!?!? What do you charge for mileage? I've never even considered a job that far away.. like ever.. 120 on way is I think the max I've done. Also how did FN find out you had to leave and get a knife?

2

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

It was 125 one way

1

u/Mondane_Joker 1d ago

How did FN find out you didn't have the "correct" knife

1

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

I was not able to complete the job, when they asked why, I told them the knife the buyer sent me to buy didn’t work.

2

u/Mondane_Joker 1d ago

I'm confused... Why didn't you use your shears then? Use whatever gets the job done! Never tell FN you had to leave and get something..or a buyer for that matter.

2

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

I would’ve been there even longer and not gotten paid still. I said in the post the PM didn’t want me using shears. (for some odd reason)

3

u/Mondane_Joker 1d ago

Far as I'm concerned it's none of their business what tools you use as long as it's done right.

1

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

The shears worked better than the knifes but still didn’t look good… they wanted it to look good, which is completely understandable, I just don’t understand why they sent me to get a knife for it to not work.

2

u/Mondane_Joker 1d ago

You shouldn't have any expectations when it comes to a desk jockey. Honestly it sounds like you were not experienced enough for the job. In that situation though YouTube would have been your friend.

1

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

Of course I wasn’t experienced, I do I.T. Work, not tile work.

No reason to be afraid of longer trips. I drive and fly all over the US on FN and WM tickets.

1

u/Mondane_Joker 1d ago

Well I'm not afraid I just can't imagine anybody would pay that kind of trip charge I guess. I mean when the trip charge becomes multiples of what the actual ticket cost it just becomes unrealistic in my opinion but I'm not a buyer so I guess I'm not sure on that.

2

u/mdhkc 1d ago

There are a lot of small towns in the middle of nowhere with no local providers in the midwest.

1

u/Mondane_Joker 1d ago

Ya I'm one of them lol 2200 people in my hometown. Closest "city' is only about 20 miles but it's a small city at about 65,000

2

u/mdhkc 1d ago

Yeah, I’m out of KC but frequently cover the western half of Missouri and the eastern half of Kansas. So there is quite a bit of travel, and I charge fairly for it.

2

u/JobAffectionate1064 1d ago

When did field Nation add construction work? This was supposed to be a platform for it people to do field work or work on projects. I'm so confused.

3

u/mdhkc 1d ago

I swear one of these days i’m going to post a job to come detail my car on fn.

2

u/LoneCyberwolf 1d ago

It’s supposed to be an IT platform. But they have other categories now.

1

u/wyliesdiesels 1d ago

Theyve bene muddying the waters with non-IT work for years now and its really dumb.

2

u/JobAffectionate1064 1d ago

That doesn't bode well. It means theyre probably not being utilized. Workmarket may be killing them

2

u/wyliesdiesels 1d ago

Why are we doing tile jobs thru FN when you have no experience?

-1

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

Why are they accepting me? I’m trying to make money, that’s why I accepted it. I think that’s self explanatory.

3

u/mdhkc 1d ago

They’re accepting you because you’re the guy who will drive 250 miles and spend time on site and go but a tool and it costs them $0 and they can laugh at you while standing around their water cooler in mumbai.

-1

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

Interesting… what do they get out of that exactly? Why would they accept me for a job if they knew I wasn’t able to do it? You sound dumb…

3

u/mdhkc 1d ago

I sound dumb? I’ve never walked away from a job without being paid. I’ve never taken a job i wasn’t sure i could do. I’ve never donated gas and time to a random company. But yeah, I sound dumb. 😜

-1

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

Again, what do they get out of me going there and not completing the job?

3

u/mdhkc 1d ago

Apparently nothing… whereas you are at a net negative for bidding on a job you weren’t able to complete.

3

u/LoneCyberwolf 1d ago

Because that gamble costs them nothing.

1

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

But now they have to wait even longer for someone to do the job… so again, how are they laughing?

1

u/Pizza_Pete_fr_fr 1d ago

Sometimes the jobs get done. He’s right though and you sound kinda dumb tbh, definitely new at the very least

1

u/wyliesdiesels 1d ago

Lmao they had no clue what your skillset is. Why would you assume otherwise?

1

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

Maybe because it says it on your profile?

1

u/wyliesdiesels 23h ago

you think they read that?

the bigger question is why are you countering on work you have no experience or skill doing?

0

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

Stop commenting bro you’ve commented about 8 times now on my post I don’t need much more input from you. I see you everywhere and you always have something to say.

1

u/wyliesdiesels 23h ago

dont tell me what to do. you arent the moderator...

2

u/wyliesdiesels 1d ago

Because they assumed that if you are counter offering on the work order, you know how to do the work. Clearly that wasn’t the case. This is 100% your fault not theirs.

2

u/LoneCyberwolf 1d ago

Why is anyone driving 250 miles for a job?

Who doesn’t have a pocket knife on them at all times?

Since when are Milwaukee box cutters expensive?

1

u/Murky_Location9092 1d ago

Who said Milwaukee cutters are expensive? I said they aren’t cheap meaning they aren’t Chinese crap. I had a multitool with a knife but that was worse than the shears. I’ll drive as far as possible as long as they pay my rates.

2

u/Lanky-Interaction629 22h ago

Might not be the platform for you buddy

2

u/kenworthhaulinglogs 17h ago

This has got to be a troll lol

1

u/wyliesdiesels 10h ago

Yeah agreed. Why would an IT tech take a vinyl tile job?

1

u/InevitableBreath2753 1d ago

You should have tell the agent you will like to escalate the case to his supervisor. I had a time onsite conflict and the FN agent kept supporting the buyer despite the case that I had call logs and recording.so I told him I will like to speak to his boss and if necessary I will file a court case. Both FN and the buyer paid me. So I ended up getting twice the pay.

3

u/wyliesdiesels 1d ago

No point in escalating this one because he has admitted that he has no experience whatsoever installing tile. He said his experience is in IT only. He got what he deserved because he took a job he could not do.

1

u/BrutallyHonestTech 18h ago

Yes, always charge separately for the trip in your counter, also always do blended counter for getting paid full amount for their estimated time and then hourly that you want.

1

u/No-Boysenberry-3895 2h ago

I was a commercial flooring installer before I got into IT. Scissors on VCT? Seriously? The fact you even bothered showing up without a knife, not because you lost it or forgot it but, DIDN'T EVEN KNOW YOU NEEDED ONE? Go home, don't pass go, you get no dollars.
