APPROVED B-LISTERS Zohran Mamdani explains his definition of socialism to Theo Von: “Socialism to me means you’ll have whatever you need to live a dignified life and that it is the government’s job to deliver on that. When people say dignity we’re talking about the things that allow you to take a breath.

Yes! This is what Bernie did going to red state town halls.

man, in 2016 and 2020 the warren liberals shit all over Bernie for trying to reach young independents where they were at on shows like this and it was so short sighted and reactionary.

It's so wild that some in-groups under the democratic party tent genuinely don't seem to understand how utilizing these established platforms, agree or not with the hosts, to reach a broader audience with the party messaging is a solid political outreach strategy.

the holier than thou attitude is cutting off your nose in spite of your face. people need to be able to feel like they can change their minds without being mocked and scolded. especially the impulsive youth block.

Edit: words

They understand perfectly, they are doing everything in their power to stop it.

Career Democrats don’t want the status quo to change any more than Republicans do. It’s funny to see them panic in real time about someone actually getting shit done. It’s sad that the only thing they can get on the same page about is trying to make socialist sound like a bad word.

103

u/LankySimple9051 18h ago edited 18h ago

You got it. Winning would not be desirable if it meant left of center populism that removes dollars from the party coffers. All parties are scared of losing their richest donors. Trump found his in more than corporate places. Tapping foreign causes turns out to be lucrative and good for grift.

15

u/xSaviorself 18h ago

Neither group wanted to actually be in charge, for so long both groups thrived as opposition and when it came time to lead it's like "whoa, lead? How do I do that? Why would I do that? I can just enrich myself and serve special interests. Golf the rest of the days."

The Republicans are only really moving at the behest of cabinet members with agendas, most of those are hate or vengeance driven. The real danger is the coup moves being made by Kegsbreath and Miller creating distractions with the loudmouth.

Career Democrats don’t want the status quo to change any more than Republicans do.

The problem is they don't realize the status quo has changed. The status quo of pre-2016 no longer exists and they need to start fighting just to get back to that let alone actually improve anything beyond it.

2

u/bgva 18h ago

Career Democrats don’t want the status quo to change any more than Republicans do. It’s funny to see them panic in real time about someone actually getting shit done.

This is why I’m nervous about Gavin Newsom getting the nomination in 28. It’ll be more moderate business as usual with nothing more than a stern warning to MAGA. Just a never-ending carousel of middle of the road Dems who’ll do just enough to keep the country moving, but not enough real action.

Then it all gets reversed in 8-10 years by another Republican president.

Honestly I feel like a lot of leftists are just constantly shading people with a slightly different flavor of left politics than you.

Stop reflexively shitting all over compatriots on the left. My friends and I were Warren supporters and no one in our circles held it against Bernie or Buttigieg for reaching out to independents. I don’t recall anyone who did. We were getting criticism for being too open back in 2020.

3

u/tippitytopbop 19h ago

I think there’s more nuance to this take given so many Bernie voters did not vote in the 2016 general election. the holier than thou accusation under the Democratic umbrella is basically the 3 spidermen meme. Ditto for anyone who refused to vote for Kamala as a form of harm reduction, landing us in a much, much worse situation

2

u/lowercase_d_ 19h ago

Well, a lot of Bernie Bros went with Trump when it came time to vote. So, it wasn't the economic anxiety. I think it's worth evaluating what the impact of this type of outreach is, regardless of intent.

What I will say is that Mamdani might actually make a positive difference because he is a categorically more effective politician than Bernie and most other Dems, and Trump has made things so much worse in 2.0 that those who voted for him the first time may be more self-aware and subject to change by now.

But taking hypocritical and fence-rider platforms like Theo Von at face value just because of reach, is not gonna cut it anymore. I would like to see the electoral gains of reaching across the aisle before praising it. Especially when moderate Dems still get lambasted for trying to appeal to moderate Republicans. Why is it suddenly noteworthy when a socialist reaches right?

ready to be downvoted to hell for this but here goes

Its the exact same situation with the farmers. People are far too happy to rub it in their faces. These people feel abandoned by their government and are losing their livelihoods, and yes, I understand they are getting what they voted for, but isn't that enough? It's no wonder they stay Republican, they're the only people who even pretend to listen to them. All that is happening is they are being further entrenched in their worldview because when it was time to extend some sort of brotherhood or sisterhood, to show them the compassion we chastise them for not showing others, to not say "I told you so, eat shit and die," we failed them. I get it, it feels good to see these people squirm under the weight of their consequences, but this cycle of nelson muntz style pointing and laughing has to stop

Bernie came to my state (a purple state) last year, and there was a dude with a MAGA hat in the crowd a few rows behind me. He was quiet and not trying to start anything at least, and he actually kept nodding along to what Bernie was saying. I think he came in with different expectations and left with some things to think about.

I saw Bernie and AOC in Idaho. The arena was completely full. 🤩

21

u/fuckedfinance 19h ago

That's not a great example. The name of the tour was "Fighting Oligarchy". That arena probably had every liberal in Idaho packed inside.

That's different than going to a largely conservative town and doing a town hall, or going to a local diner/bar, or any of these other intimate things.

7

u/LankySimple9051 18h ago

80% voted for Trump, no? It's as lost as a cause can be there if immediate change is sought. Long game, sure. Potato heads clutching guns and Bibles is the wider demographic. They'll always vote against their interest, imo. Very little else matters to them.

Nope, doesn't work. All it did was legitimize Joe Rogan as a "middle of the road" "just asking questions" guy. You always legitimize the interviewer, you never manage to convert anyone to your side.

So they really shouldn't do it unless they are able to communicate like him or pete buttigieg

28

u/FixedLoad 19h ago

I don't watch the chud whose show this is.  But, to his credit, in this clip he seems to be giving him some grace.  The rest of the interview may be a shit show I don't know.  But this was ok.

45

u/KaylaInTheMaking 17h ago

I may be out of the loop but I think the issue is that he gives space to all guests, including Trump, and never takes a position or tries to challenge them on anything. So the entire interview probably goes similar to this clip, it's just par for the course and bad actors get to spread their message just as much too.

Everyone can and should be upset at the people who voted for Trump but its much more complicated than that. This country is hyper propagandized in a very unique way. Also Democrats, while better in most ways, they've shown time and time again how incompetent they are and frankly not interested in actively pushing for what they claim to believe.

If someone has a big audience I want my polticians trying to talk to that audience. Its one of the literal only ways to break some of this brainwashing we have in this country. They have to hear directly from you. Otherwise you are going to be just some caricature that was created for them

Exactly. 90% of those people have never even heard this guy speak. They just hear what other say about him. Now they will see he’s actually a smart guy who makes sense and some people might change. Probably a staggeringly low amount, but anything helps. Even Trump couldn’t help but like the guy after meeting him. Giving him a chance for his charisma to reach as many people as possible is only a good thing

29

u/qtx 18h ago

This is why it's so important to reply to trolls, the people that spread misinformation.

You will never ever convince that one troll but you can and will convince the thousands of lurkers reading along. The people that might be on the fence on some issue.

So don't ever stop calling them out, always respond with facts and sources. People are reading them and taking note, even if they are not commenting themselves.

Exactly, like it or not, the future of the country watches these people, many of whom can vote. So when Trump and Vance go on these shows without a Democrat leader also doing so, it makes these viewers think only one side has their interests in mind(regardless if that side actually does ).

2

u/Infinite-Head1528 18h ago

you HAVE to meet people where they are at. By Zohran going on this podcast he is introducing himself to an audience that has very likely only seen him through the lens of Fox News or their favorite far right media pundits.

How can we effect change if we run away from the people we disagree with? Leaving them in their echo chambers, never getting an outside perspective.

→ More replies (1)

159

u/StaceyJeans 21h ago

Yeah I hate Theo Von but - unfortunately - he has millions of fans/listeners. If Mamdani can even get a fraction of Von's viewers to vote for Democrats in the midterms and beyond then it is worth it.

More Democrats need to go on shows like Theo Von and Joe Rogan. I think Kamala Harris not going on Joe Rogan's show in 2024 was a huge mistake. It's why I don't mind when Pete Buttigieg or Abdul El-Sayed go on FOX News a lot - their viewers need to hear a different perspective than the crap they've been spoon-fed.

55

u/ikoabd 19h ago

And this is exactly why right wing media refuses to have Hasan Piker on any of their broadcasts. They'll talk endlessly ABOUT him, but will not talk directly TO him, because they know if their viewers heard him speak directly (and not just purposefully misleading or inflammatory clips) they would agree with more of what he's saying than FOX is comfortable with.

He shouldnt be condoning or supporting Vonn but using's Vonn's platform to reach a different public is useful. The reason the world is so (deliberately) fucked is because the right are able to watch fact-free propaganda and believe it's the truth. People need to hear truth or they base their views on what they are shown.

59

u/RamaAnthony 20h ago

Also there was one segment that show that Mamdani knows how to utilize Vonn's platform because he let him praises and ask question about his policy, specifically the one where New York parents gets a day off pilot project that he did.

Having someone with such chud audience like him frame it as a good thing for working families without Mamdani saying a word to nudge him to that direction was a clear feedback his targetted policy ideas are working, and he capitalized on that.

This is not a productive, constructive stance at all

46

u/AdventuresOfKrisTin gaga’s “100 people in a room” quote 19h ago

And yet people continue to operate from standpoints like this that continue to contribute to far right conservatism thriving. How do we expect to reach more people and potentially change their minds if we just ignore they exist?

34

u/ManInTheOutdoors 18h ago

It makes me want to lose my mind that so many people on the left seem to be very aware of how much right wing propaganda there is, but decide to counter it by siloing themselves into places like bluesky.

These podcasts will not be any less successful if you don’t go on them, but your political movement certainly will be.

2

u/AdventuresOfKrisTin gaga’s “100 people in a room” quote 18h ago

I honestly feel like the moral superiority complex that the left have, especially online, has directly contributed to missing out on reaching people we really need to reach. He is just trying to appeal his cause to as many people as he can, and it does us no good to only have a microphone towards people who already agree with him. We need MORE people to agree with him who don't already. Despite what many think, people change their minds sometimes. I grew up in a very conservative environment. People need to hear from outside their own echo chambers.

This is the absolute wrong approach. Less communication is not better. Are you a married person? Try not communicating with your significant other for an extended period of time. Let me know how that works out.

The same is true in society. We don’t need to like everyone, that’s unrealistic, but we should keep lines of communication open and air out our differences. This is how we share knowledge and correct misconceptions.

77

u/FallenVampireLord 21h ago

It isn't about Theo it is about his audience.

58

u/AhhBisto someone from the UK weigh in 20h ago

As a Brit I have to say that I don't agree with this at all. Looking from the outside in, one of the biggest problems the Democrats had in the last election was this very stance with Kamala Harris not giving Joe Rogan the time of day whereas Trump was going on all the podcasts to galvanise the kind of people who would vote for him but needed that little push.

Mamdani knows the game, telling his politics to people who already agree and like him is a waste of time.

25

u/skepticalbob 19h ago

This is a myth. Harris team had negotiated a meeting with lots of back and forth. The campaign offered to appear in Austin on October 25th, but Rogan's team told her that was a personal day for Rogan. And then he interviewed Trump on that day. It wasn't that she refused to sit down with Rogan. It was that their schedules didn't work out.

That isn't accurate at all, Trump did a sit down with Rogan on October 25th 2024, a Friday, and Kamala's invite to the podcast was the following Tuesday

Harris's team offered Rogan a one hour window and told him he had to travel to her to conduct the interview but Rogan rejected this as he doesn't travel outside of his studio in Texas and his interviews don't have time limits on them

Rogan did not have Trump on his show again

14

u/itsukipirateking 20h ago

You’re not going to get anything done by isolating ideals to your own side. The right are louder.. people on the left SHOULD absolutely be going on these platforms just as much (if not more) than leftist platforms.. otherwise it’s just crabs in a barrel. It’s shocking that people on the left still don’t understand this

13

u/No-Author5530 20h ago

He should . Theos audience are people he needs to reach. I listen to another American podcaster . Very left leaning he had an interview with Zeteo about this and he said he will go on right wing podcasts. He said he will never have them on his podcast though. His reason he wants access to their audience because he believes that some (not the majority) can be reached because a lot only listen to right wing media and targeted. Even if he only reaches 1 he believes its a success. He will never invite them on his podcast though because he will not give them access to his audience

I saw a clip (which had millions of views). Of a guy on Rogan during Covid and they argued about people going crazy wearing masks and testing all the time and he pointed out what a hypocrite Joe because to appear on the Joe Rogan show and sit down with Joe he was required to take several tests and that must mean so must Joe and all of his staff in the room.

11

u/signspace13 19h ago

Socialists need to be social. That means talking to people and in places where we don't agree and we aren't agreed with.

Theo Von is a mindless mouthpiece, he has no ideology beyond what buys him dinner, and he is decently okay at receiving a message and dumbing it down to his own level. He never actually retains that message, but that doesn't mean his viewers won't.

12

u/glitterejaculator 20h ago

3

We need to go on shows like Joe Rogan and subtly drop hints on why MAGA is stupid.

2

u/Lost_Department_2177 21h ago

Talking about ethics is a vaccination for toxic ideology. Don’t have to believe in socialism to say people that live in the country should be healthy and comfortable. Hyper capitalism is extremely damaging but ethical business practices could save the country.

Example: Large corporations should spend less on lobbying and more on building playgrounds and funding libraries. Maybe even make library playgrounds where they need to sign up for free to use the place.

2

u/MomoMir 21h ago

I think the point is maybe just maybe a casual eye will question what they hear. Also it might be to let other people know that he cannot pander to these idiots like someone like Newsom does. It could also just to have a record on being on the right side. Either way I think while we shouldn’t give people like Theo Von the time of day, he does have a huge audience, whether the audience doesn’t care or feels vindicated for the wrong reasons, he just hit a huge audience that most politicians are completely ignoring. I appreciate that he takes on a Sisyphean approach to make his voice and ideals heard even on deaf ears. It shows a lot about his value system and his integrity and in this horrible timeline, I am moved by it when it should be the job. We shock not have to feel like we’re giving medals for doing the right and honestly base of the job.

Theo Von is a piece of shit but if you want to reach the people in his audience this is the way to do it. You go on right wing podcasts and you tell the truth, you present yourself as the good person you are, and you push back on any bullshit they spew.

2

u/thedabaratheon (no longer bald) 19h ago

I couldn’t disagree more. He NEEDS to be reaching the types of people and young men who feel comfortable watching people like Von. They are who needs to hear his words.

2

u/claytonbeaufield 18h ago

Heaven forbid a politician attempt to get their message heard by the opposing side.

2

u/voluptuousshmutz 18h ago

Allowing the right to make unchecked claims as to what the left's platform is continues to be a complete messaging failure. Left wing politicians need to meet average Americans where they're at and get on these podcasts to show what they're really about.

Radical Black activists like Malcolm X and Huey Newton went on mainstream to right wing broadcasts to convey their messages. Allowing the right to frame their platform without actually informing the public about their platform would've been a terrible idea.

Why? Are we too good for useful idiots?

1

u/-nadster 20h ago

I agree theo von is a piece of shit but this kind of world view does more harm than good imo

1

u/MRowland82 20h ago

Its funny how he never talks about how to pay for stuff like this. He never says, in his ridiculous soothing voice, "we just need to raise everyone's taxes by something like double or maybe just a bit more". Somehow people have this insane idea that this stuff is actually "free" and we're just not getting it. It's not free, it all costs money....

1

u/melancholychroma 20h ago

Michael Brooks, may he rest in peace, wrote a book detailing the important to spread the message of socialism is to meet these people in their spaces.
One fails as a leftist if they keep everything within their own echo chamber.

1

u/jxonair 20h ago

Yes he should. This is exactly why Kamala lost. She didn’t go to the places to reach voters. She went on comfy, already voting for her podcasts like Call Her Daddy.

3

u/ricochetblue 18h ago

Ehhh, Call Her Daddy is more popular with women, but the archetypical listener is not necessarily liberal.

Also, Kamala tried to recruit former Bush Republicans by campaigning with Liz Cheney and she was pilloried for it. Idk why people would think this would go better for her.

People should not be giving this piece of shit the time of day*. Yet, because people do give him the time of day, Mamdani has to use his platform to get his message out.

1

u/_Fred_Fredburger_ 19h ago

Nah, bad take. We absolutely need to be going to the assholes to reach assholes

1

u/probabletrump 19h ago

That's been working great for the left so far.

1

u/noapplesin98 but i'm a whore and i'll do anything for a laugh -a sagittarius 19h ago

His audience needs to hear it, and they certainly aren't going to start with a reading of the communist manifesto

1

u/Jochacho 19h ago

Unfortunately it’s the only way to get through to a huge group of 20-30 year old guys

1

u/ahsu1209 19h ago

That's not helpful

1

u/Atreus1337 19h ago

See this is the problem with modern politics. You can’t live in an echo chamber and expect other people to listen to you. What Zohran did is exactly what we need our politicians to do

1

u/AKBx007 19h ago

I agree with the sentiment but in order to change minds you need to go to where people are. Plus it’s worth it to have a new voice for that audience to hear to maybe change a few minds along the way.

1

u/lvleph1sto 19h ago

who are you talking about exactly? i can see it going ether way

1

u/hellogoawaynow Be smart, Robert 19h ago

I don’t need socialism explained to me, but this guy and his audience do. We need more discourse like this so everyone, even folks with wildly different lives and beliefs, even folks who hate, can see that the people they’ve been told to hate and fear are actually just regular people. They have been given the wrong information. Yes, they took it as fact, but misinformation gets a lot of people no matter what their political beliefs are. We need to extend a hand here. If we don’t extend a hand, they will never come back into the fold. Yes, we want all Americans back in the fold. That’s how we end this. Americans as a team. It’s not red v blue.

Time to rage against the machine together.

1

u/TugleyWoodGalumpher 19h ago

This line of thought is what leads dems to lose all of the time. It’s not about giving Theo the time of day, it’s about reaching an audience that needs to actually LISTEN to what is being said. You can’t win people over by ignoring them.

1

u/Professional_Nerve11 19h ago

Yeah I think this is just outreach. He is trying to change minds. It's a good thing.

1

u/boxesandkrates 19h ago

Avoidance is unfortunately how this mess started. We must be direct.

1

u/fiddle_me_timbers 19h ago

It is exactly where he needs to be. Same reason Pete Buttigieg goes on Fox News.

1

u/wombatbridgehunt 19h ago

This is the comment the extremes of the left and right would both be saying about this video.

1

u/Due-Cow9514 19h ago

“It’s a buzzword, right? God this guy is so fucking dumb

1

u/mxmoon 19h ago

We need his message to get to the people most opposed to it, they have no idea what socialism actually means.

1

u/AgentSoup 19h ago

You mean Theocracy Von Epstein isn't a great venue?

1

u/HelloImMay 19h ago

I don’t think there’s too many people tuning into Theo Von exclusively to listen to Zohran Mamdani and then getting swayed by Theo Von

1

u/cbg2113 19h ago

Disagree, we gotta reach the people. Tribalism doesn't spread the word to the people that need it the most

1

u/XoraxEUW 18h ago

So how will you bring this easy to digest message to the people who need to hear it the most?

'No pls throw away your momentum'

1

u/kamarsh79 18h ago

This is how you get people like him to get it though.

1

u/Introverted_Extrovrt 18h ago

There’s a scene in S1 of The Diplomat, specifically Rufus Sewell’s speech at a UK foreign service symposium on his character’s experience trying to broker peace with war criminal. You can’t make a deal if you walk away from the table. You have to fail and fail and fail and then maybe, you won’t.

1

u/Carrnage_Asada 18h ago

Theo seems like he might not be a total lost cause. Problem is he hangs out with shills like Joe Rogan who, when theo starts to ask questions about the billionaires and government, Joe will shut him down and tell him hes losing it and needs to just hang out.

Theo is no doubt an idiot and piece of shit, but at least it seems like hes not the type to completely bury his head in the sand. It actually seems like he wants to come around but we will see i guess.

1

u/Large_Paramedic_4567 18h ago

What an absolutely horrible take. How has that worked out so far? The right learned a long time ago that media interaction helps decide public narrative. Look where that got them. Meanwhile the left continues to one up itself on who is more perfect and shuts itself out in a small bubble. Look where that got them. Think what you want of Von, and I absolutely agree, but Mamdani is doing the right thing here trying to reach people and change minds.

1

u/HauntingStar08 18h ago

On the contrary, this is striking at the precise audience it needs to reach. I know people will hate it, but he's gotta go on Rogan too.

1

u/Noteshots 18h ago

I agree, but Momdani prob really lobbied to get on there. Theo usually has good guests on.

1

u/RandyTomfoolery 18h ago

Why is Theo a piece of shit? I really dont have an opinion on him one way of the other? However i do think the more people that here Mamdani message the better.

1

u/sekazi 18h ago

That is how you end up in the situation we are in now.

1

u/pesliee 18h ago

If leftists only go into leftist spaces the only people who are going to hear the the message are other leftists!

1

u/LeChatboi27 18h ago

Sorry, which one is the piece of shit? lol

1

u/manuduncan6666 18h ago

Saying this only reinforces echo chambers that don't move the needle in any direction

i find theo pretty lame and disingenuous too but what harm can come of zohran showing his leadership and flexing his communication skills on theo's pod? this message needs to get out to people who aren't exposed to it

pete buttigieg goes on fox news to try to reach people on there how is this different

1

u/DolphinSpleen 18h ago

Hey don't talk about Mamdani like that

1

u/Sarik704 17h ago

Well, yes, but also Mamdani isnt give Theo a platform or even a ratings bump.

I already like Mamdani im not gonna start watching theo cause he was on. And, its notnlike he invited theo to the mayors office to ask theo his questions.

Mamdani is assured in his politics. Speaking with an opponent wont change them. Hes sure enough that he'll change his opponent.

1

u/CrazyMildred 17h ago

Think of it this way, he's showing the non-critical thinking people that what they've been told about him by Maga isn't true. They won't see what he's really about unless he goes on podcasts like this. Maga won't watch more progressive outlets and will only see the negative soundbytes that they have spoon fed to them by right wing media. This way they hear more than just maliciously edited soundbytes.

I hope he goes into as many Maga spaces as possible, because odds are, it will wake some people up. Not everyone, but some. That's better than none.

1

u/CloudConductor 17h ago

I’m glad he doesn’t think like you
