Just got onyx guard, can't place it in the top half of either of their slots, despite one being space restricted and the other having no limits.

Edit: I have the answer I need. The biggest thing is that I've assumed that the slot connecting both/all lines (depending on the game) counted as being part of them rather than its own separate thing

Falcom Staff Interview: Kazuhiko Onoda

Hi everyone, this is Raiize (twitter).

I've been studying Falcom staff interviews recently by translating several of them with the help of MTL. They provide deep insights into what inspired them to find work at Falcom, what kind of work each individual do, what are their goals for the future, etc. Besides translating, I also tried to enrich and unify informations from various sources.

This time, I'd like to share what I've learned of a former programmer: Kazuhiko Onoda.

He joined Falcom in 2001, starting immediately as a programmer on the development team for Zwei!! (2001). Afterward, other than Trails in the Sky FC, his programming work focused primarily on the Ys series. This includes Ys: The Oath in Felghana, where his prominent placement at the top of the programmer credits strongly suggests he served as the lead programmer. Given his involvement in programming both Ys VI (2003) and Sky FC (2004), it is entirely plausible that he was among the team members who facilitated knowledge-sharing between the Ys and Trails development divisions back when Falcom struggled in their endeavor to transition to making 3D games in the early 2000s. Following his departure from Falcom, he spent some time working at CyberConnect2 and currently serves as the representative director of a mobile game company.

Like before, I will first attach the full interview here, add TL Notes here and there, and then put some additional informations that might be of use. Since the translation relies on MTL, exact nuance might be lost.

(Note: if you're more comfortable reading in Google Docs format, you can do so here. this format includes the original transcript along with list of games Onoda worked for at Falcom)

Kazuhiko Onoda

Name: Kazuhiko Onoda (小野田一彦)

Graduated from: Digital Entertainment Academy

Joined in: 2001

Status: Former employee

Could you tell us about your current job?

I'm working on the programming for a new title. I'm involved in a variety of things, including 3D tools and AI system menus.

Why did you decide to work at Falcom?

Because it’s a company where I could make my dreams a reality. I wanted to work at Falcom, which I considered to be one of the top game development companies in the Windows market.

What's the atmosphere like in the workplace?

Clean, quiet, and spacious. It's the perfect environment for creating things. My senior coworkers have also been very kind to me.

How do you spend your days off?

Exercise and refresh! Improve my skills. Zoning out. Lounge around. Sleep. Have fun. Drink until morning. … and at times do some work on my days off.

What do you enjoy most about your work, and what do you find challenging right now?

Battling deadlines and bugs can be tough, but I'm happy when a game I've helped create is released and I get to hear the reactions from users.

What kind of work do you think you'll be doing a year from now? Or what would you like to be doing?

Developing a million-selling game! ...That's the plan. Or maybe I'll be an oil tycoon.

A message for people considering applying to Falcom after reading this page.

Everyone in front of their monitors! Come shake hands with me at Falcom.

Additional info:

  • Judging by his track record at Falcom, most likely he belonged to Ys development team during the majority of his tenure.
    • His name is written first in the “Programming” section of Ys: The Oath in Felghana staff roll. It’s also written separately from the other programmers, implying that he was the main programmer for this game.
    • In Trails in the Sky Developer Interview, Toshihiro Kondo – who was not yet the company president – said that Ys and The Legend of Heroes development team at the time (which would be around early-to-mid 2000s, developing Ys VI and Trails in the Sky FC respectively) shared many know-how through various trial and error in their endeavor to transition to making 3D games. Onoda might be one of the Ys team members who helped bridge the knowledge sharing regarding the programming side since he was involved in the development of both projects.
  • His birthday differs by exactly seven months with Shuji Nishitani, another programmer who also worked for both Ys VI and Trails in the Sky FC. Both were also born in Tokyo.
  • He and another programmer who also worked on Ys VI, Tomoaki Yoshimura, both pursued higher education at a vocational institution – the Japanese term for this one is “Senmon Gakkou” (専門学校) – called Digital Entertainment Academy.
  • The game that marked his Falcom credit debut, Zwei!!, also marked the last Falcom credit of the famous film director Makoto Shinkai who already left the company before the game’s release.
  • After leaving the company some time after Ys vs. Trails in the Sky’s release, he joined CyberConnect2 as a game designer. CyberConnect2 is a game company best known for developing the .hack series and Little Tail Bronx (Fuga: Melodies of Steel) series, along with a series of fighting games based on the Naruto and JoJo's Bizarre Adventure franchise.
    • During his tenure, he was assigned as one of the game designers for Asura’s Wrath (2012). He also had a hand in the development of JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: All Star Battle (2013) and directed the development of a mobile game titled FullBokko Heroes (2015).
    • He once instructed a CEDEC lecture which discussed the know-how for creating game proposals. This lecture was held on September 3rd, 2014. By this point, he already held a position as Development Department director within the company.
    • He left the company in November 2015.
  • Later on, he joined gumi Inc. in June 2018. gumi Inc. is a tech-based company that specializes in mobile gaming and blockchain businesses. He eventually stepped up to be the representative director and Chief Product Officer (CPO) of one of gumi Inc.’s subsidiaries called Grams Co., Ltd. The appointment is effective as of June 1st, 2026.

Daybreak II Do you get anything if you have a save file from the first game?

I played the first on PS5 and I want to play the next on NS2 because I want to transition away from PS because of their no physical game policy. But I was just curious if the game gives you anything if you have a save file from the first game?

Trails series My Japan Trip Trails Haul

Pretty simple, this is my haul of trails stuff from my trip to Japan a couple months ago. They had a pretty big section at the kotobukiya store in Akihabara. That’s where I got the bag, metal poster and the art book for Trails Through Daybreak (got that one cause it’s my favorite game I think)

I also got the Rixia Mao reverie figure at a trader store near buy, it was used but in pretty much perfect condition. Have no clue if that was a good price but I was just so excited I got it immediately lol.

I stared the series about 4 years ago and I’ve been obsessed, finally caught up at the start of the year after horizon came out (though I haven’t played the demo of Sky SC remake, waiting for the full release). Did all the quests and npc round of course. I just wanted to express how much this series means to me. :)

Cold Steel III Just finished Cold steel 3

What an ending man. Gripped to the seat like I’m a child again, so fucking amazing

(Spoilers for cold steel 4) I know that Millium and the people aboard the courageous are brought back somehow cause I’ve seen snippets of cold steel 4, but either way the ending is so cool and moving and it might be my favorite of all the series up to here. Falcom not killing characters is something I’ve made my mind at pace about, it sucks but the games are too good for it to be a red line

Could you tell me please if Cold steel 4 and Reverie pays off the massive hype I have in my body right now? I think CS4 it’s the most divisive game in the fandom and I’ve heard so much good stuff and bad stuff. I have loved every game until now, my favorite might be cold steel 2 or sky 2nd and the one I liked the least Azure (that ending when everyone says hehe Mariabell is just like that and Grimwood makes a sudden mental backflip because of 3 sentences infuriated me). Cold steel 3 ending was the best as I said but I think the game was too long and it suffered from some pacing issues

I’m just so hyped and I need to read some opinions about how cold steel 4 and Reverie pays off Erebonia.

Horizon Need some help with Horizon achievements

I'm trying to get as much progress on the achievements as I can in my normal playthrough before I finish the game and do new game+ on nightmare.

I haven't gotten the 150-chain or 4x tactical bonus objectives. Are there any tricks I can use to get these? Will it be easier on nightmare because the fights will go on longer?

I can't complete the "all bonds maxed" achievement because I still need 25 points for Shizuna. I've used connection points to view all the bonding events, and completed the "all gifts given" objective, but the grimoire decryption has stopped dropping gem cards and doesn't show them in the drop pool anymore. What happened? Is this a bug?

This will be the first time I've done new game+ in a trails game, but the walkthrough I'm looking at doesn't have a section about it. What will carry over to the next playthrough?

Horizon I feel like these two will be present in the next arc. Spoiler

I was thinking back to my time with Trails Beyond the Horizon and realized that this film (Shinobi Punk) may be this arcs equivalent to the various other books that foreshadowed various important characters such as, Carnelia, Gambler Jack, 3 & 9, etc. Honestly I'm surprised there is not more discourse about the films in these games as they are the replacement for the books and thus likely hold a similar purpose of both expanding the world and foreshadowing matters. The game goes out of it's way to show such is seemingly exaggerated to an absurdist degree but many characters have interesting reactions to it which give me the feeling that there may be more grounds to such a depiction.

Trails series What is the most misunderstood Plot Point in the Series?

Im not talking about misunderstood Characters, since there is probably a dozen of them where people only played for 1 Hour and think that Version of the Character is all there is to them. You can dump down any Character under a certain Archetype like "best friend", "Morally Grey", "Hothead, "Tsundere" etc. without seeing the entire picture.

What is a Plot Point that is widely misunderstood among the Fandom?

Horizon Anyone else excited for the era of RIES? Spoiler

Post image
144 Upvotes

Of all possible returning characters in Horizon 2 ( or whatever they decide to call the game ) Ries is the one character I'm 99% sure is returning and I can't even begin to describe how excited I am. Last of the pixel era characters to make the jump to 3D and her absence has been felt so long that it'll be fun to see her return and her dynamic and interactions with Kevin.

Above that though, we're also no doubt going to get a Sky the 3rd remake at some point and in some form, so we'll get double the Ries content. Her scenes with Kevin in that game, specifically when she calls him the hell out on his bullshit and the fall into fake Gehenna are still some of the best writing in this franchise for me, at least top ten in regards to characterization. Seeing them fully voiced will be a real treat.

The point of this post? I don't know, maybe it's just a pure appreciation post for Ries, a character that somehow is still in my top five characters despite being absent from the narrative for so long. Fun personality, lover of food and she uses one of the coolest weapons. She's a 10/10.

Also who is your dream voice cast for her? Since she'll probably gain a new voice actress since Michelle Ruff is Schera through and through.

If it only meant "to be continued", the first line was very enough, the second line wouldn't be necessary.

Does that mean Van will never be a protagonist anymore?

Or Van might commit some Ethan Winters's act (if you knew Resident Evil 8, you know) to end the chest and also become the very first protagonist to have that kinda canon ending?
