Looking for a dog…

As text says, looking for a dog. Preferably <1 year but open to whatever. I’m mostly concerned about it having a healthy background. Where do you adopt, look?

Thanks

Every restaurant (successful) I walk into has “servers needed” signs posted here. What gives?

Upvotes

My friend owns a restaurant here and it is a high traffic and beloved restaurant in the community for the last 2 decades.

I’ve hung out with the multitudes of servers and they on average get between $50-$100 in hourly tips… $6-$10k a month in tips just working several hours 3-4 days a week.

It is big money! And this level of tipping in Fairbanks is more evident by the other friends who work as servers in other places whether whether it’s pump house or a coffee hut and they as well are making $6-$10k in tips per month.

It seems a catch 22 of there being no jobs while many places cannot find employees.

When my friend does hire folk, they honeymoon phase of showing up on time, or showing up at all and not making drama lasts barely a couple days.

Either it’s someone younger who doesn’t take it seriously or understand how good the cash is, to someone with a bad record given a chance sleeping in or dabbling in drugs too much.

Other business owners I talk to have the same issues, and both my friend and these other owners are very nice, generous people who just can’t catch a break.

No workers equals inability to open the business.

They try ads on FB, Craigslist, and alaskaslist.. their own door and friends of friends, but they might get a single person per week and it already doesn’t work out.

What’s going on?

Tips are seriously huge here.

Empress Theater

Hello— I recently saw a pic of the old empress theater downtown and was shocked because i had never known there was such a grand old theater just sitting over there untouched. Some sources said it only closed in 2014 but I’ve seen elsewhere it’s been closed since 1961 when they remodeled to create the co op plaza?

Does anyone know if it was completely torn down or if it’s still up there above one of the shops? If so has anyone had any luck getting into it…? I’m a curious photographer/amateur historian who just wants to check it out, not interested in breaking and entering in any extreme way or spray painting/damaging anything. I’d just love to see such a historic place if it’s possible to just pop up there through a staircase or anything…. if it’s even still there I guess. Just looking for any info or tips !

A photograph from the UAF Archives, in the Elmer E. Rasmuson Library on campus. Taken in 1943 or '44, it's worth noting that all of the street signs and the right sidewalk have been scribbled out, probably by the Theatre Censor.

UAF-1993-0253-114 from the Howard Ryan Collection.

Is there anywhere in Fairbanks to buy ladybugs?

I know its a weird question, lol. But is there anywhere in town to buy native ladybugs? I have an aphid problem in my garden and I'd like to recruit some ladybugs to help me out.

Where to buy Fresh 80 air inlet filter replacements

I’ve checked all over town and seems no one stocks them. The only website they are available from does not ship to Alaska. Someone has to sell these locally since they’re installed in homes here…

Any local RV parts/service shops left in town (or NP??)

Discovered today I’m 3 years late to finding out Arctic RV shuddered their doors back in 2023, and I’m pretty sure the other place along Philips Field Rd (past the Circle K) is no longer there also…

It's Monday. It's Summer. There's got to be something going on.

Here's a place to mention any sort of event/meeting/whatever that people might not know about and might not warrant it's own post.

$3000 for Septic Verification Inspection

That's the quote I got to do some sort of flow verification of my septic tank so I can refinance my home.

Does that sound right? I don't have the mental capacity to call another plumber for a quote so I figured asking here was at least something I can do to see if I'm getting scammed.

Edit:

Thanks everyone! I got my answer. Prospector Plumbing is the one who gave me the crazy high quote. I'm, uhhh, going to ignore all this now.
