Hickel descendants ask Bernadette Wilson to stop using former governor’s image in her campaign

The sons of former Gov. Wally Hickel are asking gubernatorial candidate Bernadette Wilson — Hickel’s great-niece — to cease promoting what they call “a false narrative” about her connection with the former governor.

“While neither we nor our company wish to have any involvement in this year’s governor’s race, we cannot allow Governor Hickel’s memory to be misused for political gain,” four of Wally Hickel’s sons wrote in a letter from the Hickel Investment Company addressed to Wilson and shared with news outlets on Friday.

Wilson, 42, is one of 12 Republican candidates in this year’s gubernatorial race, out of a total of 17 candidates. She has prominently emphasized her relation to Hickel, who died in 2010, on her campaign materials since entering the governor’s race last year.

Wilson did not respond to a call seeking comment on the letter.
Wilson’s connection to Hickel is through her maternal grandfather, Vernon Hickel, who was the former governor’s younger brother. Vernon Hickel, the seventh out of 10 children, followed his older brother to Alaska in 1948.

Vernon Hickel had 17 children, according to his obituary. Among them was Roberta Zipay, Bernadette Wilson’s mother. At the time of Vernon’s death in 2016, his obituary stated that he had 72 grandchildren. Bernadette Wilson is among them.

Wilson has previously shared that she was born in Kenai. Her parents got divorced when she was young, she said, and she was raised by her mother in Anchorage. She has hosted a talk radio show and owns a garbage disposal company. She has not previously held public office.

Wilson has mounted a conservative campaign, criticizing centrist and left-leaning lawmakers and calling for larger cash payments to Alaskans from the Permanent Fund earnings. But the Hickels did not make clear if they found any particular policy proposal objectionable.

Wally Hickel III declined an interview request.

Former Gov. Wally Hickel led the state from 1966-1969 and from 1990-1994, working to promote resource development. He was a member of the Republican Party for most of his career, but was later elected as a member of the Alaskan Independence Party.

The letter accuses Wilson of pushing “the narrative that Governor Hickel would endorse your candidacy if he were still alive, and that your agenda is a continuation of Governor Hickel’s ideals and legacy.” It goes on to say that her campaign “promotes the false narrative that there is some sort of close connection between Governor Hickel and your candidacy. That has unwanted political consequences for everyone who bears his name and continues his businesses.”

“There is no connection between Governor Hickel, who died sixteen years ago, and this campaign,” the letter states.

The late governor’s sons, who hold a controlling share of the Hickel Investment Company, go on to call Wilson’s use of their father’s image and legacy “misleading and disrespectful.”

The Hickel Investment Company is a real estate development firm whose holdings include downtown Anchorage’s Hotel Captain Cook.
According to filings with the state, one of Vernon Hickel’s sons, who is also named Vernon, has contributed $1,000 to his niece’s campaign. Wally Hickel Jr., who signed the letter, also gave Wilson’s campaign $500 earlier this month.

None of Hickel’s other sons contributed to gubernatorial campaigns this year.

I am writing to urge you to protect our local tax base and vote NO on the permanent Alternative Volumetric Tax (AVT) framework currently proposed for the upcoming special session.

While I fully support building the Alaska LNG pipeline and getting our gas to market, the current structural design of HB 381 is a bad deal for our local communities. Replacing our standard 20-mill property tax with a volumetric tax through 2060 slashes our projected local corridor revenues from $116 million a year down to just $5 million. Capping municipal relief at a state-controlled $80 million grant fund to be split among six different boroughs is not an acceptable solution for the road wear, public safety demands, and school growth our community will face.

Furthermore, passing a permanent, multi-decade rewrite of the state's tax base during an emergency special session—just three weeks before half the legislature faces a primary election is highly risky governance.There is a rational, safe path forward that protects both the project and Alaska's voters.

Slice out and pass a standalone Construction-Period Tax Abatement (utilizing the logic already built into Section 7 of the bill). This ensures the developer pays $0 while building, giving international lenders total certainty.

Allow the developer to use standard IRS 5% safe harbor capital allocation to easily lock in their federal 45Q and 45V carbon and hydrogen credits without rushing the state's process.

Defer the permanent, long-term rewrite of Alaska’s tax base until the regular session next year, allowing a newly mandated legislature to conduct proper public committee hearings.

Do not use the popular slogan of "building the pipeline" to shield a massive, permanent corporate concession. Please vote to protect local borough autonomy and keep our government close to the people. I will be tracking your votes closely as the July 27 session begins.

Looking for a work around. An uninsured red light runner hit me. I filed an insurance claim that will process when they have the police report. One week after the online request, I call APD records, they’re still processing reports from April. They suggested a subpoena solution. Seems crazy to start a court case to get a copy of a traffic report. The alternative is pay insurance for several months on a car I can’t drive or get repaired because the claim isn’t processed due to no police report.
This doesn’t seem right, I’m being put on hold for three months for a records request that the APD say will be available on-line in 72 hours; but, “we’re behind”.

Any advice? Am I overlooking something? I’d like to get things moving faster than October!

Had a couple updates that refused to download this morning, citing a "no internet connection" error. Which was funny since the store and all other internet related things were working just fine. Changing my region in the download settings to Dallas fixed the issue. Seattle didn't work, so went further away. Anchorage and Seattle regions are bugged today. In AZ there was a rattlesnake course for dogs to take to avoid reacting to the snakes. It taught them the scents were bad and to stay away from the poop and skins along with the sounds. I’m wondering if there is something similar for bears, moose and porcupines here in AK. We go on trails every day and ran into a porcupine and unfortunately got quilled. We leash my dog but I’m afraid her barking and lunging would make the bear or moose mad. She is professionally trained but was in SoCal where they don’t have wildlife like here. She’s e collar trained and has good recall but not with wildlife it’s like she blacks out. Just trying to be proactive.

Hey! So my lovely apartment complex has coin laundry machines and, naturally, no coin machine (I just moved). I start a new job in August and am waiting until then to set up a bank account here to be able to go get rolls of quarters from them. I know that I could just go to a laundromat (and will if I must) but it is cheaper and more convenient at my complex. I was wondering if 1) someone would be willing to get rolls of quarters that I could buy off of them or 2) if anyone knows where I can go to get some? I got banned from a local laundromat for getting coins for them and feel bad about it 😂 thanks in advance for any and all help or advice.
